  • She iz and always wuz amazing not to mention very beautiful! ....oh how I long for those mystic and fun dayz of the late late 70's and early 80's....SIGH.

  • Toyah you are a brilliant shining star. I have always been inspired by you, Go Toyah!!!!!!

  • Love the Martha & The muffins version , this sounds like Blondie ( and yes i love both bands ) .

  • I liked Toyah, but I have to say this version of a classic is absolutely dire! lame and lifeless !!

  • Check out electro kill machine on youtube and facebook., They are supporting Toyah in April. Saw them play with ADAMSKI last month...awesome!

  • I think i was 10 when i listened to this, toyah totally primed me for Nina Hagen and Diamanda Galas (and kate bush in her hounds of love phase) and all the goth / industrial/ jungle/ drill and bass/ glitchtronica/ abstract electronica that came as an adult

    fucking thakyou TOYAH!

  • Toyah looked amazin here

  • This recording is sick, it's badass

But not in a good way. Sick in so far as it brings to mind the nauseating stench of a pile of stinking vomit. Badass in that if a freshly dumped bucket of diarrhoea could sing, this is almost exactly how it would sound.

  • @trashcanalive You must sssshhhush now please as no one is listening to you and you are making yourself look very silly indeed.

  • @farfisa There's a problem with the end of this recording - it's much too far away from the beginning.

  • @trashcanalive Much in the same way that there is a problem with the end of your life in that it is much too far away from the beginning - now I'm not saying that trashy-poo, it was you mother who told me this.

  • to be more pacific i want to fuck her in the ass!!!!!!!!!

  • i love it, bit 80's pornographic,or maybe im just a little bit horny today!!!!!!!!!peace.

  • v.cool vid-keeping in mind this is from 1987

  • Most people who know this version (ie not may) actually hate this, yet she brought a dull original to life, proving the song was fine, unlike the original group, if you can call them that. Thank God talentless old hag Madonna didn't try to do it, she's bastardised more than enough tunes, and that's usually ones she tries to pass off as her own.

Well done Toyah, you weren't the best female of the 80s-when women singers were the best ever, but you certainly figure in the Top 20.

  • Strange as I'm familiar with her & MatM's material. The video was in 1987, yet it looks & sounds more like 1984. In 1987 music changed quite a bit from new wave. I prefer "thunder in the mountains", but still not a bad cover. The original is still better.

  • @British1500 oh no!toyahs version is much, much better;and im not just saying that cause im a big fan,it really is. its a pitty the same cant be said about disire album from which echo beach is taken from--its horrific!!!

  • she DOES look amazing in this, although it's my least fave Toyah single!..

I'm still all about "I Want To be free"..

  • I was at echo beach once near lake huron georgian bay area?

  • If I ended up in hell and was given the choice of having either this or Friday by Rebecca Black played in my ears on a constant loop for all eternity, I actually thing I'd choose Rebecca Black.

  • Musical taste is of course subjective but I;m afraid if you like this you should seek professional help as quickly as possible. Its REALLY fucking awful, a cynical attempt at record sales for Toyah the BBC puppet. Seriously , educate yourself (or listen to the real thing). No wonder she ended up on daytime TV.

  • Thiss is such a fantastic video

  • Very Siouxsie but its still a classic

  • An insult to Martha and the Muffins.

  • @MoveOnSoulClub yeah, but Toyah is 1000 x more sexy!

  • It's like listening to cats mate. And a bit disturbing watching her dance in her Granny undies

  • Toyah somehow managed to transform a classic into a flaccid dirge. If she had any taste she'd be hugely embarrassed by this shower of shite. Dreadful.

  • Love it ever since 1987! Anyone know how to get the extended version?

  • A great, fiesty Hi NRG cover version by Toyah!.. What year what this..1984/5?

  • @mickfizz1

    1987.

  • never ever cover the original again

  • classic for some of us!!

  • DODGY

  • love ya toyah - i remember you on the cover of one of the very first "look-in" magaines i ever bought !! great song !! luvvit !

  • hm, a quite modern version of martha + the muffins' song from 1980. I'd still prefer the original, but toyah is great anyway. sheep farmin in barnet was my fav album far away in the 80s

  • @hlamerz I also prefer the original, but worth hearing none the less!

  • I really like this version-it's the first time I've heard it. I love the original, but this one is really good too. A nice synth-pop revision.

  • ... is that echo beach, bali... excuse my ignorance...

  • Women of my dreams in the 80`s ;-)

  • god she's gorgeous!!!!

  • i like her songs but her voice is kind of annoying. like the way she says things.

  • now that summer is over lets listen to this song.

  • She didnt even sing this originally.. It was Martha And The Muffins

  • thats not real water on the back round

  • Amazing! Why have I never seen this before???

    Wonderfully 80´s!!! Love Toyah!!

  • it's not that bad...actually it's very good:):):)

  • @orffyreu

I was disapointed to find This TOYAH the first time without "PUNKY LOO"..but it was before our present ..it is FANTASTIC ..song and style

  • The Song is okay, but the Video is terrible; there is a flair of Fame or such a fuck

  • toyah is as fit as f!@k, and rather cute!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Toyah looks so cute here.

  • bad cover indeed ... but i did like Toyah way back when .... and my best mate was the biggest fan of Toyah at the time ... she was hot .. so no problem ..

  • ohh noo

  • 80's forever....i saw Toyah once...in concert....she was FAB!!!!

  • Works about as well as Martha and the Muffins covering Neon Womb.

    ...talking of muffin

  • Don't take it seriously, pretty good back then, saw her at Hamersmith Odeon 81/81 (i think) she never stopped jumping around for a couple of hours. had everyone up there. Good times.

  • Do you remember the guy who kept spraying her with that string from a can? She kept moving around the stage, but he followed her. God we laughed.

  • great video ,great song

  • she lives in pershore

  • Good old Toyah - lives in my home village of Wyre Piddle in Worcestershire now

  • dont think they believed in "shooting on location" in thoes days.......

  • I think Toyah is a great role model especially in the 80's im sorry i never got 2 a gig luv u Toyah and all the band X I think this version, Martha and the Muffins and more recently a role model 4 the New Millenium Gabriella Cilmi r all fantastic.

  • with this video i like the way toyah shreads her old photos and is trying to be a 9 to 5 slave whore 4 a slave driving business, but YEAH it aint working.

  • When it comes to Toyah, she is my ultimate singer. I have been in love with her since the 80's (although she doesn't know it lol)

  • @marmitemagpie me too ;0)

  • @marmitemagpie Oi..get in the queue :) I'm 43 I've carried a crush for 30 years! yikes!

  • @marmitemagpie BBC doc wth Toyah &Mellissa Kaplin/Necronomicum images & EIYA live back when she lived in a warehouse. OGWT performing Danced etc.Got my hair done by Keith @Smile &started designing clothes (school uniform like nothing u can imagine) got my head kicked in @school for dying my hair & wearing camped up 'Blitx' make-up. Deffo worth it. I like M&M version &had a night of laughs with the darling late Billy Mackenzie (tragic loss). I see this as a standalone version, not a comparison :)

  • @marmitemagpie She was on at Blackpool Pride 2011 this last weekend - she was FAB. EVERYONE went insane!! x

  • @marmitemagpie You are not the only one......couldn't marry her so I named my Daughter after her.....she is the only Toyah I know

  • @marmitemagpie me too :-)

  • I love Toyah ! It's a credible cover I think

  • Discuss it all you want, but this Woman just keeps getting better looking as she ages!!

  • I love Toyah, adore her. But IMO this cover is weak and soulless compared to the original. The video is also exceedingly cheesy and not 1/50th as sexy as it wants to be... more exploitative than anything.

  • LIKE WE SAID IN FRENCH

    "la classe "

  • LOL! That's hilarious!

  • I love this song; I love Toyah too, but this isn't a good version, but having said that, any cover version of a song is a tribute to the original, the singer obviously really likes the song and it's not intended as a piss-take.

  • She must of really hated the original, to do this to it.

  • Really, really hated it!

  • From my home Town!

    Lucky to me .

Along with UB40 and Duran Duran.

    Coxynuma.66.

  • yeh but martha and the muffins is the best version

  • look, we can discuss this for all eternitiy, you got your opinion, rude as it is, and i got mine, and btw, Shakira is a REAL artist, not a singer who sings songs written by others, About gabriella Cilmi, i like her voice in the song, i think i fell on my head when i was a child, i think that caused me to like it... so there you go :)

    Viva Shakira!

  • 1:18 - was the shot of her shredding images of her previous looks/styles a way of saying she wasn't the same person/artist she was back then? Maybe I'm reading too much into it - it just reminds me of that George Michael video where he burns his leather jacket/guitar to put his "faith days" to rest.

  • you are right, she stated in an interview that time, that she wanted to get rid of her old image, as we all know she returned to it nowadays

  • No doubt Toyahs version is inferior to Martha's but she makes up for it with loads more sexiness and a definite 9 on the shaggability scale.

  • She's hot. Well.......,was, is still now as far as Im concerned.

I remember her in an issue of Smash Hits or summin, with a black nipple showing.Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.Long live Toyah with the sexy lispth.

  • Well it`s Punk - en it.

  • Whats up with Toyahs voice here?

  • She's hot and Fripp gets to bang her!!!

  • this must be the cover song

  • Toyah Wrote this Song ok im not looking for a fight look it up she let Martha and the Muffins sing it . It became a big hit so she descide to do her cover of it but it only got on a b-side

  • Sorry mate, that's not true. Toyah was forced to record this by her record company (as they threatened to pull the budget on her album "Desire" if she didn't. She never wrote it.

  • O i know that my friend wrote the Commet he was like she wrote this but yea its a good song i never head martha and the muffins version mainly because i dont like any of there other songs

  • Your completely right it was written by some dude called mark gane...just looked it up, sad man that i am

  • oh sod off like its a million miles from martha n the muffins-so can no one ever sing any one elses song-like we are gonna hear so many doing take offs of echo beach on the x factor etc -hate x factor but its hardly like its an everyday song .

  • toyah fit...love her music..and i quite like this song actually..

  • Martha & the Muffins - Echo Beach

  • so who did this song originally??? this chick or someone else???

  • martha and the muffins sang it a lot better than toyah no wonder this ended up as a b side

but got to admit she looks fit on this.

  • It wasn't a b-side. It was released as a single in 1987.

  • This is the kind of thing that makes me not miss the '80s, or whenever

  • She has also sold millions of records worldwide, has presented hundreds of TV programmes and acted in countless films and theatre shows. She is also a multi-millionaire. Not bad for a "talentless short-arse who can't sing to save her life" eh?

  • Are you seriously trying to tell me that every recording artist out there who has "sold millions of records etc etc" is talented ? Think again my friend.....

  • No I am not saying that. Anyone can have a hit record, but not everyone stays around for thirty years. Toyah is still booked to do live shows, TV programmes and theatre shows. You need talent for that sort of longevity.

  • Hmm...this shows a curiously devotion to Ms Wilcox...I am beginning to wonder ...is that you Toyah !!

  • Who designe the PC-Monitor we see at the beginning of this clip ??

(shes so nice, we did she hide herself for years behind an ugly mask and make up?)

  • this is lame. but the video is kinda cool.

  • She's hot and Fripp gets to bang her!!!

  • saw her at king's lynn festival, for her age she was brilliant respect

  • I like it and IS she hot!

  • Yeah... Probably just around the next corner, that one...:-o

  • martha`s version is much better.....but on a serious note i would much prefer to shag toyah!

  • IMO. Martha's version rocked this one.

  • Toyah performed this live last night at the Wisley Music Festival in Surrey. It was the best I've heard her sing it. She was excellent.

  • Thanks for uploading! Is it true Toyah hates this song? Anyway, the 12" version is absolutely on the money, fantastic.

  • Yeah it is, she was made to record it by her record company at the time. I think she's learned to love it now, and performs it briilliantly live.

  • Thank chuff I missed this first time around. Did this poor woman ever have any credibility?

  • Martha's version is So much better - no offence to Toyah

  • has anyone checked out gabriela cilmi's version? Its real good. Worth having a look. Just type in her name and Echo Beach

  • Flashface, Martha should KISS TOYAH'S ASS for making her mediocre song sound good!!!

Why do idiots like you care about a mediocre song from a mediocre one-hit-wonder (M=M) from almost 30 years ago is beyond me.

Toyah's version is in EVERY way superior!!!

  • Maybe because they prefer that version? You know, in the sense that they are exercising their personal musical taste? If that makes someone an idiot, fetch me my pointy dunce's hat.

I've got to say I like the original better, there's more interesting music behind the singing, and the vocals are more convincing. Toyah's kind of droning the words, it's a bit dull.

  • I should think she must have a headache after all that head swinging.

  • GREAT song, but the video??? Toyah jumping around on a faux beach doing what looks to be an aerobics routine. LOL! Brilliant concept. Boy, but weren't the 80's CHEEEEEEEZY!

  • She looks really hot in this video - wow! Great cover too!

  • I have to say I like Marth/Muffin's original, but this is excellent. I always loved Toyah and everything she did. Always revolutionary, always original/unique...always freaky. I love it.

  • I actually really like this song the more I hear it.

I do wonder why people who hate this song come back time and time again to re-post comments...seems a bit sad to me.

  • i was just reading the comments and therefore not watching the video. i now realize the song is not so bad its the bloody awful video reminded me of the sort of thing Sam Fox used do.

  • It's overdone. Original was better.

  • Waaaaaaaaay much better!

  • It brings a smile and a nod of recognition from those who remember the era it came from. Let's not get too heavy about it... it's just a song.

  • ...even though martha looked like your auntie iris.

  • and you're so very handsome..have you a girlfriend yet?

  • Hey check this out! GWM4GWM actually asked the guy who uploaded this video to disable comments because I and many others think this cover is crap! Read his request at:

    youtube[dot]com/sheepfarminginternet

GWM, I'm entitled to my view and I have expressed it intelligently in my posts without resorting to personal insults against you, as you have against me.

  • LMAO - how true!!

  • Agreed...I've just learnt the guiar part to echo beach and without it, it falls well short

  • I prefer the music on this one but prefer Martha and the muffins voice. Love the show too!
