Why isn't he explaining the importance of knowing keys/scales when improving? I thought the reason you couldn't use the F# or E# was because the song wasn't written in a key that included F# or E#
@PillSmasher Actually, you can play ANY note on ANY chord. Yes, this will get some comments and there is not enough room to explain here. But, improv is really about tension and release. Yes, knowing your scales and keys are important and I explain that in detail in my lessons. I can't explain everything about improvisation in 90 minutes worth of video. This lesson is designed to just get students going. But remember, you can really move inside/outside in improv and use any note.
Willie explains why the F sharp doesn't sound good as a melodic improv note here. I wonder if this is another valid way to think about why the F# doesn't sound good: it's not a harmonic (1, 3, 5) and not a perfect 4th or 6th of the bass chord.
Are these chords on the sheet music?
