  • amazing track. love the sounds u used. Did u know there was a Fairlight plug in for Propellerheads reason by Bitley called Fairlight Legacy II and theres an extended one called Fairlight Legacy XXL too. I love the fairlight sound but can't afford a real one, this plug in that i mentioned is probably something i will get myself, although i only do music for myself and nobody else, it'd be fun to experiment with sounds

  • Very good, great electronic sound. Just what I like!

  • Wow, what bass sample are you using? I don't seem to see it in the description.

  • Those Mirage pianos really stand out, don't they? Nothing else quite like them. You hear Mirage samples all over a lot of classic hip-hop, too...

  • Wonderful sounds, wonderful playing! Perfect 80's vibe full of emotion. I'm subscribing :)

  • I never tire of listening your instrumental with nostalgic sounds ......... is brilliant

    thanks for sharing with us

  • that's funny i got that same little casio (2 actually) ..I actually dO like the little built in rock drum beat it's got : ) heh heh

  • very nice i like it

  • @korgpadude hhhhhhh fakarni mnin kont sghir kan andi wahd kif had casio

  • @TheBal3id LOL fairlight machhor bezef kan ghali bezef bekri sta3mloh fi miami vice fi des sons incroyable

  • Brilliant! Those old samplers really had an emotional quality to them. Makes me want to put on a white linen jacket and roll the sleeves up :)

  • Go Mixcraft!!

  • sweet track! any chance of uploading the song audio only for us?

  • Nice!

  • Super cool oldschool sample sound that piano sounds great for a sample. How do you find the Oberheim DPX-1 works for you?

I have an S900 and there is a DPX-1 for sale near me that I was thinking about picking up just so I can save some of the poly in my S900 but still get those cool sample chords.

Can't find much info on it as a machine other than that its a sample player compatile with almost all samplers of the time so I would be interested to hear what you think of it.

  • @snolan1990 I actually ended up selling the unit not too long after this video. My disc drive was acting up, I think that's the biggest problem with these older 80s units...Mine had the additional analog filter and something else I believe it was the second to last generation made. I used it more just as a standard sample player for my Mirage and Prophet 2002 discs...I would pick that up if it seems to work fairly well and isn't much more than $100..

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I had checked that the floppy drives were both working and as they are I might just give this one a go.

Sounds like a decent machine to use along side an S900 then and a great excuse to buy up some old Mirage, Prophet and Emulator stock discs and put those sounds back to work. I have a Juno-60 & JX-3P sitting here but loading a patch sound into the S900 just gives it a whole new raw edge that works great with the smooth analog sound.

  • @snolan1990 I'm a beginner to some of this.

I have a Yamaha Motif Es 8, what's my best bet for getting the Great Bass Sound at the beginning of this? Is that from the Fairlight samples?

  • Nice akai s6000 ^^ !!!

  • post more of your stuff bro. i these instrumental synth pieces.

  • Outstanding!

  • this sounds like incidental music from a miami vice episdoe. nicely done...

  • i love it!

  • Hi, where did you get the solo sound that you lstart to play at 0:20?? What´s it name?

  • @dysphoricrealm This is the Fairlight Choir.... it still can be found in several modern rom-playing synths (Roland U20, Roland JV2080 and more)

  • Nice sounds and some of the arrangements early on in the demo but it didn't sound tight enough on the piano, also overdone on some of the sounds. Good stuff though.

  • i like this. alot. where can i get these samples, good sir>

  • This sounds so good.

From where did you get that Arr1 sample?

Which is playing that sample on the video ?

  • how very Art Of Noise of you

  • I like the sounds in there, the eighties synth music was always said to be cold but I never experienced it that way. Nice tune!

  • Nice sounds...

  • Comment removed

  • Jep you got that vibe :) nice!

  • Sounds like mid-80's Tangerine Dream. Love it!

  • Where is the Fairlight CMI?

  • SAMPLES from the Fairlight, not the actual hardware.

  • Wow very nice... really 80s... i dont like it.. i love it !!

  • Pretty snazzy!

  • wow ich love this sound .. wow .. bretty nice and beautifull ... need more of them ...

  • I enjoyed that. Really nostalgic!

  • Listen to The 'Missing Truth' on the Playstation 1 game "Legend of Mana", and you'll hear ARR1 too. On the faery quest it plays when the mother girl dies and goes to Gaia.

  • Where might I find sample libraries that feature vintage synths? I've heard that Best service has VST called 'Cult sampler', but that's the only one I know with. If you can enlightened me some more, that would be most appreciated!

  • Vacher12:

Next to Cult Sampler, Nostalgia is great, if not better in some ways than Cult.

But if you're after retro sounds, having both is the way to go. They're really nice collections, that compliment each other superbly.

  • Nice track

  • PS. I don't seem to find the song I uploades.

    Newbie...

If You want to listen just give me Your email and maby You could lay it out.

  • Or any.

Ouch.. did this sound complicated... LOL

Actually, You could "fool"/make the CMI to have 1 different sound on every sound card and then choose poly of You chose of he cards You wanted to play on that part.

    Very interresting effect.

In short... You choose witch card that would play on what chanel. 1-8.

    As Your choosing.

    Very flexible.

If everything has gone right, I have just uploaded a song I wrote on this one.

  • Mono OR Poly!

    I meant. :)

  • Well, it came with one keyboard as standard.

The feal was quite good to say asiquate for a synthesizer keyboard.

It used a betal rod conecting to a spring on every note (inside).

There was no trouble to hook up another keyboard as it used MIDI.

You could use the different sound cards as You choosed too. It had 8 ones and so 8 voices. And so You could asign any of those to any polophony of mono as You pleased.

    But the sound dynamics.... WOW

  • As a previous owner of a Fairlight IIx, I can asure You all of that disregarding the fact that it has the memory of that time, it has the sound of HiFi that few nowdays even get close too.

I mean, the dynamics is absolutely scary.

If You play a base note or a sound that goes donw ther, it realy shakes You.

It REALY sounds as big and heavy as the computer is.

    No kidding!

It has dynamics in SPADES and it is scary to hear it and compare it to other NEW synths now out there.

  • That's very interesting, it's a shame you had ot let it go! I would love just to try one out for a few mins...BTW how was the keyboard that came with it (I believe it came with two if I'm not mistaken...they functioned like a master and slave?) Anyway how would you compare the feel? Did it feel as grand as it was? I'm sure they didn't cheap out on the keyboard...

  • @treplacements90

I think that You could order the second smaller one as an option to play a different midi channel.

The feel of it was... well, good. It didn't have that "cluck"-feel that I like from a piano, but more of a constant resistance.

Each key had a spring as a contact towards 2 bars that lead across the keyboard.

So the computer calculated the time between the contact of the first bar and the second to get velocity sensitivity.

  • is the initial pad from the fairlight?

  • Very nice. Sounds like a Tears For Fears influence!

  • Thanks buddy! Yeah I frequently listen to them as well...They happened to use the Fairlight on their two biggest songs (Everybody Wants To Rull The World, and Shout)...so you are correct :)

  • Could you guide me on how I can set up my hardware and preamp for use in Sonar 6? I have a MobilePreUSB and for some reason won't work, even when I set it up right. It works when i use another sound program though...

  • What sound sequencer is that? It looks like Sonar...

  • Sorry buddy, I was using Acoustica Mixcraft 4 & haven't had any experience with Sonar to help. I appreciate watching the clip tho!

  • For my fellow sound-freaks: my 2008 dance mix of Moments In Love by Art Of Noise is basically my homage to the Fairlight ARR1preset (the breathy voice-like sound you hear on that record). I use original Fairlight samples to play a nice solo part with it. If you want to check it out - and my other tracks - simply look for the Matt Mix! Matt Pop.

  • I think this is hot. I love vintage gear, you can't get that feel from a program. Not to dis computers! Cause all digital samplers and keyboards are realy computers. Na-mean!

  • You really captured that special 80's feeling in your song.

  • Beautiful!

It reminds me of Italo Disco, like something by Laser Dance.

  • Neat! I love the sounds of old samplers.

  • hey bro awesome video. i really dig the jan hammer style of the sequencing. work on your drums, the linndrum sounds are good awesome you can sequence it a little more creative. try also download the kawai r100 drum samples. this machine was also used by jan hammer. make some more videos plese!

  • Thanks...as far as the drums go, yeah I know I wasn't that creative with it, but rather lazy when it comes to laying down a programmed beat. Believe me, I have basically every known drum machine sampled and ready to go. I'm not a big fan of the Kawai, its good for certain things I suppose. I just got my hands on some Linn Drum Eprom sounds, so I may be using those for the next project...I appreciate everyones comments, thanks again for keeping the spirit of these old machines alive!

  • Is there a huge difference between playing samples from the DPX1 and the s5000? And where did you get the Fairlight samples? Do you have myspace, I need more of this!

  • Yes, the DPX-1 plays back samples at 8 and 12 bit. The S5000 plays them back at 20 bit. Basically the old DPX represents how the old samplers would sound, and the artifacts downsampling provided...its from that era...The s5000 is just go to play back the sample without any artifacts...Actually I found someone who had sampled the whole Fairlight machine, so I have a CD with every sound on it. I had to then sample that into the Akai s5000...I don't have a myspace with the Fairlight sounds, someday

  • This is great.

That bass sound is the stand out.

The drums sound like Linn-9000 samples.

  • Great, it's like being back in the eighties.

    tnx

  • Nice song. I like it. Check out my music.

  • Great song, with that lo fi warmth, very impressive.Makes me think of Miami vice.

    Keep on !!!

  • Thanks you!...Crockett's Theme is one of my favs, so it probably rubbed off a little ;)

  • This is really nice.

How did you get that bass sound?

  • Thanks, thats from my Alesis Ion...it has a Moog Source feel to it...and as I don't have a sequencer, its played all in real time...

  • nice more videos please

  • I like the song. Where did you get the Mirage and Fairlight samples from? I'm really interested in getting my hands on them. Thanks.

  • I have an old Oberheim DPX-1 that can play Mirage floppies (as well as Emulator II, Prophet 2000, and Akai s900 discs). I bought someone's old collection off of ebay, about 50 discs in total. Some from Ensoniq, some home made. The piano is a standard Mirage sample (from dactory), whereas the strings someone sampled themself. The Fairlight is from a CD Pro-Rec sells. They sampled the Fairligt IIx, every sound. Its amazing!
