    Backup before failure !

  • the first hard drive is a fujitsu, or fushitsu

  • @THEPOWERMAC6100 They run cooler then other drives and are still reliable.

  • The last Drive at 0:41 isnt a Fujitsu its a Seagate!

  • 00:17 LOL

  • Wow, if your computer harddisk fails you are really screwed. But if your physical harddisk fails you are even more fucked :D

  • @royalsteven those are the same thing -.-

  • Oh I meant, intern harddisk and extern harddisk.

  • PREPARE FOR HARD DRIVE FAILURE!!!! xD

  • Get an SSD.

  • @an65001 i punted an ssd in its packaging and made a field goal the ssd is now in my system working flawlessly

  • KIPKAY!!

  • KIPKAY!!!!!

  • I don't like those sounds created by crappy HDDs

  • What the fuck is "kipkay"?

  • thanks.... really helpful. now i know my harddrive is not failing =)

  • kipkay awsome

  • how to see if your hard drive is failing?

    maybe how to listen

  • KIPKAY!!!!!!

  • 0:28 i have this HDD 1.5 GB :D

  • KIPKAY!

  • what does a back up mean?

  • @mcmamac What does a brain do?

  • id picture a computer as a plane that starts up way in the sky thenslowly decends as it runs out of fuel then *crash* is there such thing as hard drives that wont crash ???

  • kipkay !!!

  • Few I thought my HDD was making wierd noises, pfff its fine compared to this shit.

  • @Technobanana yea really, thats why i,m even lookin at these vids, same u?

  • Those are some old drives. They need to redo this with shitty WD 2.5"s (like my piece of shit)

  • @brizabonskee: 2GB barracudas were the worst. Overheated like nobodies business and then just make one loud screeching noise before the platters locked up like they were in a vise. Had that happen to 11 of them (different machines. I was IT for the company).

  • Maek your own videos, idc if this was 2007.

  • head dammage XD

  • @MikuMikuBeat My computer usually always clicks once on boot-up, but once I had one of my hard drives fail. It would try to boot up, click repeatedly really really fast, and then stop. The computer would then restart and it would happen all over again.

  • When would these noises occur that we should be concerned? Does it just keep repeating from power on to power off or would one stray click at startup be enough to worry?

  • The IBM one has a cool trance beat to it. A DJ could use it.

  • The first one sounds quite cool, but if i hears anything from my laptop, i'd shit myself.

  • my hard drive doesn't make any strange noises at all and it's already giving me a msg to back up and replace it immediately...

  • HaHa you dont see seagate in that list BITCH!

  • This hard drive sounds better than Q-Bert !

  • mhmmh i had my samsung 129 gb hardive for 2 or 3 yrs and it still good

  • the wd sounds like a buzzer

  • @bpmagruder It Sounds Like Someone Is Close To Death.

  • but barracuda??

  • Holy crap, that is a Kipkay speaking !!!

  • i don't even hear anything in the bijitsu or whatever

  • ibm is so easy to see if your hd is failing

  • Comment removed

  • Good to know. I remember one year...three PCS ago (in high school), my past Compaq PC's hard drive BLEW. At the time I didn't recognize any sounds of failure like in this video, but I did smell faint SMOKE, like it was burning and the screen was black and telling me my drive was shot in so many words.

  • you will also hear these sounds if you have bad sectors

  • LOL western digital sounds like someone floored a car on a game but then the game froze

  • whoa, the computer tech guy told me my hard drive was shit and i needed it replaced, turns out the noise was actually my fan bearings that needed replacing...

i have 3 western digitals, one has 30GB and has been living, and operating in temps over 35C for about 6 years now!

it does have it's own fan though...

  • This is kipkays video!!

  • ive got a MAXTOR 300 GB, since I bought it, eveytimes the CASE's Red Light Turns ON, the HDD makes a sound. It already has 2 years and nothing happen . The HDD is always above 35C. IDK the sound

  • Ticking noise?

  • hmmm. my hard drive is making a funny noise but noting like these

  • every time i watch videos of harddrive failures i need to take a dramamine

  • This video is kipkay's!!

  • The IBM drive definitely has the most comical noise. "Hey buddy, listen to this, boom!"

  • One day my chips under my hard drive exploded and the hard drive died :((( !isn't that crazy????

there was so much smoke in my pc when i opened it :(((

  • mines makes a squeaking noise like mice having sex and some other funny sounds but no ticking or any like in the video but what do you expect after using the computer every day for the past 4 years maxtor 30gb ROFL

  • I have a LaCie 500 GB external HD, and its lasted me two years without showing signs of possible failure. Anyone ever have experience with LaCie HDs. Although I want to back it up since losing the data is one of my worst fears for sure.

  • Hmm, this is kipkays voice!

  • i have 5IBM drives all 40GB and only one works now IBM made sh!t drives cus i have some old 3gb drive that still runs fine

  • suck a dick

  • My comp is brand new and it makes that phaser noise in a slightly quieter but higher pitch several times a day then goes quite after it. wtf?

  • Im hearing a sound like the last sound of my hard drive, but it isnt all the time, and its not so loud. But it still worries me. How do i proceed? After the emmediate shutdown of computer...

  • 1) Get new HDD.

    2) Install new HDD as a 2nd drive. (varies between SATA and PATA)

    3) Back up the first HDD to the second one by your choice of means. Norton Ghost, Linux "dd" command, or any drive imaging software will work wonders.

  • My hard drive already failed. But no harm done. Not any critical data. I bought a new drive, and while i open my computer, i change some other components too.

  • GOOD TO KNOW!

  • Has anyone noticed that the first hard drive they showed in the video is an IBM DeathStar?

  • I hate those drives, I had a Deathstar that ran hot enough on one mosfet that one could burn meat with it.

  • my old maxidor with all my photo backups died.... it was 10 gb but it wet up in smoke literaly heads stuck tryed to fiz it agian i opened it before unjamed heas it worked took a realy bad fall i geus and died ending in a sqeaching halt

  • So my Seagate 1.5TB hard drive makes a low "dunk-dunk....dunk-dunk" noise constantly when it's reading or writing a file. Should I be concerned?

  • if your's fails just contact seagate or where you bought it for warranty issues. if your harddrive is truely a 1.5tb then it cant be more than a year old. there for the warranty should still persist. ive failed 2 750gig seagate barricuda's and both were covered by warranty (both were 2 months over warranty too!)

  • Yeah, I just bought it earlier this week, and it has a 5 year warranty. I'm pretty much set.

  • Backup your data!

  • I can hear my hard drive's Head every few seconds when writing files to it (its in an external Dock). Is that bad? Its a brand new drive, Had it for not more than 2 months.

  • Perfectly normal.

2.5" drives make an extra click sound, because they park off the disk if you don't access it for a short time.

They do this to save power (shut down the voice coil) and for protection (avoid crash if you jar the laptop while it's running).

  • Actually its a 3.5" 5400 rpm drive-and I think what you mentioned about parking is also true for this drives. Now it is inside my computer making total capacity to 3TB.

  • @FerralVideo so is that the noise I hear on my 2.5" HDD? It kind of annoys me but I have never had any problem with it for the time I've had it. After like 5 minutes of doing nothing I just hear a random click.

  • its normal for a harddrive to make noise.

but if its anything like these in the video, then backup. NOW.

    lol

  • This is good to know.

Though, it was kind of weird when this popped up in my recommend videos, it said "Tips on how to see if your hard" and I was like SAY WOT, LOL and then I mouse-hovered it and noticed that that was not the full title.

  • kipkay? recognize his voice anywhere

  • duh....

  • tricklife stole this video from kipkay!

  • First one sounded like a phaser and a guitar chord.

  • you can't backup your data when you already have a head crash.

  • Is it the same sound you can hear on extern drives ?

  • GenyaArikado: Internal and External hard drives are essentially exactly the same devices. The only difference is that external ones are enclosed in a case.

  • Ahaa

  • 0:25 ops! It's a MAXTOR!

  • Which kind of damage is the last one? I didn't understand, sorry.

  • Wow, that really was a phaser sound. Nice.

Star Trek geekdom aside, it always pays to be a good listener. When it comes to women and hard drives, not listening can really come back to haunt you.

Fortunately, hard drives are pretty cheap now and come with more storage than even the government would need so there is NO reason not to get a new one when your old one starts it's death knell.

  • It is good to make people aware of forthcoming computerproblems, so they have the time 2 backup the most impotant data.

  • Did Tricklife pay KipKay for this video? I sure hope so.

  • Is that KipKey XD ???

  • Yup :)

  • Might as well get a Solid State Drive. That will last you like a decade.

  • i like the bass in the into music

  • that sounds like the voice of Kipkay.

  • Click of Death!

  • ha ! my new seagate is making noises like very soft tictactitac in very silent room ofcourse

i searched and ppl told me it's normal , i was like insane i thought i couldn't deal with anohter hdd crash !!! i guess i have to get use of this damn sound

  • i have a hitatchi hard drive on my pc. its 4,5 years old and i think its starting to fail. sometimes i hear this "k-krk" sound like 1 or 2 times a second for a little while and every 10 seconds everything freezes up for a little while. then it comes back to normal and maybe later it happens again. i first noticed this TODAY, and this morning i got FOUR bluescreens, caused by hard drive crash. also, sometimes i get disk boot failure but a little later it works again. its definitely failing, lol!

  • They forgot to list the Click Click Click sound

  • Barracuda HDD never failures ?? :DD

  • hell yeah!!!!

  • i have one thats a 20gb that had a hard life of 24/7 on for 3 weeks still works

  • @HatlabuFarkas what the fuck does that mean?

  • Skynet!

  • KipKay ? !

  • that man is everywhere. he knows how to fix and/or make everything.

  • Yeah that is kip-kay isnt it? i like the stuff he posts on instructables.

  • yeahh.. that's what I thought too xD...

  • he's internets MacGyver!

  • bre prettis is better for make

  • when ur comp goes into power savings mode. Ur drive/s will turn off then spin back up when active. I hear the same noises as they make when booting up system. can be misleading.

  • I have a Hitachi 80 GB drive which I bought in 2006. It makes sounds like it's touching the platter from time to time. Miraculously it still works to this present day.

  • backup just in case

  • I don't use it for 3-4 months now. But when I did I was making backup every week of my pictures. Now I have a WD drive. They told that they were reliable :-)

    P.S. Thanks for your concern

  • My hard drive started to make strange sounds I almost shit a brick when it first happened lol....

  • backup....FAST!

  • do some hdd's last years and years or only a surtenamount of time?

  • wtf? your far to late when it makes those sounds,

  • These guys are so pulling the piss with this vid! If your HDD is making any of those noises chances are you are to late!!!

  • AND PREPARE FOR HARD DRIVE FAILURE !!

  • This is Kipkay's video.

  • My HD goes like " ... ssssssSSSSSsssss ..." periodically.

And another one makes little grating sounds when there's activity on it.

I'm going to disconnect them one by one (expect the boot HD duh) and listen which sounds disappear.

  • how about my maxtor drive

  • Mine sounds like: Tik tik tik tik!...... Tik tik tik tik!

Is my drive broke? Please help me!

  • buy a seagate barracuda, this one never fails :D

  • i'll back you up with that one! =D my barracuda IDE (lmao old shit) has never failed since 2006 except when i corrupted the xp boot volume and it wouldnt boot but its been reformatted and re-installed and still going like the day it was bought...time for an upgrade though which is a shame but i want a sata drive thinking of a raptor =P

  • My seagate sounds weird, I am waiting for it's fail now :D

  • i have a friennd who got 2 seagates and one died and the other is failing, i like Western Digital the most

  • Its KIPKAY!

  • I don't buy cheap hard drives. Fuck MAC. MAC Sucks. Windows is much more better

  • i like the fujistsue and the ibm the fujissue reminds me of dialup and the ibm it a wood pecker lol

  • ".. and prepare for hard drive failure!" :O

  • i didn't know that a HDD can produce sounds like that. I like the 0:36 HDD

  • I don't! I saw lots of them dying like mayflies! It was on my informatics school in 2001-2003. We suffered several hard disk death each day because all computers were equipped with IBM Deskstars. I also had three of them at home - a short time later all dead! And my data went off right away!

  • thief

  • my old 2 samsung spinpoints 120 GB didnt make any of those noises but ,bough of them got Master boot table crashes in 3 monsths after buy ... really anoying shit X_x

  • I have a 120GB drive making the same noise as that last one (high pitch wine) and it's been running just fine like that for about a year now. It starts out quite loud but then gets quite after a few minutes which is the strange bit...

It's an older Dell so I figure when that dies it's time to get a new desktop in its place anyway.

  • if my computer sounded like that western digital i think i would crap my pants

  • the IBM sounds retarded

  • I've bought 4 new drives, 2 of them encountered problems starting to spin and then they completely stopped.

There was no data on it yet but now i make sure i have a RAID setup.

  • western digital ftw! it sounds like a car banging off the rev limiter lol

  • Remember, Fail to prepare? Then prepare to fail!

  • lol

  • My hard drive makes a worse noise than all of those! We've had it for more than 9 years, and it has always done this...what's wrong w/ it!?! i can't find any vidz on utube for any of the sounds it makes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i got the same!! its like ! beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep... for agers then when i get off web sites.. its stops..

  • note: nearly every HD is allready has somthing like 10% bad sectors when you get it form the store, but these sectors where marked by the fabricator as 'bad' (damaged) so they won't be used. you can do this by yourself if you encounter bad sectors. just use a low level format tool which is compatble with your drive.

  • There are two ways of common harddrive failures:

    1. Head crash (shown in the video here)

You can't recover from that yourself, if the data is important you'll have to pay 400 Bucks and send it in a lab!

    2. Bad sector killed some files or may be some more delicious space eg. inodes-Table or file allocation table or something like that (HD will seem to 2 emty) you will be able to get most of your data back by useing a recovery tool. next step would be a low level format to mark the bad sectors.

  • Well I got the S.M.A.R.T warning just over a week ago now and am have been waiting for the Western Digital noise to kick in, it's still holding on though, no noise as yet, have backed up all my important documents and am preparing myself to rush off to the store and purchase a new laptop seeing as I was going to upgrade within the year anyway.

  • This just means that the self diagnosis has encountered an failure. in most cases this means bad sectors!

But if you wan't an head crash you can hit your HD hard while it is on and doing some copy stuff or reading a big file.

Or you could rub it with a wool towel this should weld the head to your wavers inside

  • fuck this was a reply to

    wewillwinit6times

  • my 20gb western digital sounded like the wd one on here...

  • whats with the phaser noise on the first one? also the ibm drive sounds like its beating its meat! lolz

  • ROFL, the first one sounded like an arcade game.

  • LOL it sure did! Now does anyone know if a light clicking at even intervals of time is a sign of hard disk failure? Cause that's what I hear everytime the computer starts!

  • That or it's not getting enough power.

  • Well Windows Vista boots, and applications run normally, and now the ticking is random, is that just read/write, or something worse?

  • I'm guessing its just a noisy hard drive. But don't listen to my advice, ask in Howardforums.

  • my deathstar ibm did that then it died

  • The first drive is a fujitsu and the last drive is not a fujitsu but a seagate. I have the same drive and it's a seagate.

  • So if I see the trick life logo on my computer screen my hard drive is busted?

  • I know why they didnt mention the make of the fist hdd and turned over the last one. Because they are they same drive,TBH they shud hav not sed the make of the last one.

  • That a Fujitsu at the start? The head stuck to plater one?

Any one seen A Seagate fail?
