id picture a computer as a plane that starts up way in the sky thenslowly decends as it runs out of fuel then *crash* is there such thing as hard drives that wont crash ???
@brizabonskee: 2GB barracudas were the worst. Overheated like nobodies business and then just make one loud screeching noise before the platters locked up like they were in a vise. Had that happen to 11 of them (different machines. I was IT for the company).
@MikuMikuBeat My computer usually always clicks once on boot-up, but once I had one of my hard drives fail. It would try to boot up, click repeatedly really really fast, and then stop. The computer would then restart and it would happen all over again.
When would these noises occur that we should be concerned? Does it just keep repeating from power on to power off or would one stray click at startup be enough to worry?
Good to know. I remember one year...three PCS ago (in high school), my past Compaq PC's hard drive BLEW. At the time I didn't recognize any sounds of failure like in this video, but I did smell faint SMOKE, like it was burning and the screen was black and telling me my drive was shot in so many words.
whoa, the computer tech guy told me my hard drive was shit and i needed it replaced, turns out the noise was actually my fan bearings that needed replacing...
i have 3 western digitals, one has 30GB and has been living, and operating in temps over 35C for about 6 years now!
ive got a MAXTOR 300 GB, since I bought it, eveytimes the CASE's Red Light Turns ON, the HDD makes a sound. It already has 2 years and nothing happen . The HDD is always above 35C. IDK the sound
mines makes a squeaking noise like mice having sex and some other funny sounds but no ticking or any like in the video but what do you expect after using the computer every day for the past 4 years maxtor 30gb ROFL
I have a LaCie 500 GB external HD, and its lasted me two years without showing signs of possible failure. Anyone ever have experience with LaCie HDs. Although I want to back it up since losing the data is one of my worst fears for sure.
Im hearing a sound like the last sound of my hard drive, but it isnt all the time, and its not so loud. But it still worries me. How do i proceed? After the emmediate shutdown of computer...
2) Install new HDD as a 2nd drive. (varies between SATA and PATA)
3) Back up the first HDD to the second one by your choice of means. Norton Ghost, Linux "dd" command, or any drive imaging software will work wonders.
My hard drive already failed. But no harm done. Not any critical data. I bought a new drive, and while i open my computer, i change some other components too.

I can hear my hard drive's Head every few seconds when writing files to it (its in an external Dock). Is that bad? Its a brand new drive, Had it for not more than 2 months.
Actually its a 3.5" 5400 rpm drive-and I think what you mentioned about parking is also true for this drives. Now it is inside my computer making total capacity to 3TB.
@FerralVideo so is that the noise I hear on my 2.5" HDD? It kind of annoys me but I have never had any problem with it for the time I've had it. After like 5 minutes of doing nothing I just hear a random click.
Though, it was kind of weird when this popped up in my recommend videos, it said "Tips on how to see if your hard" and I was like SAY WOT, LOL and then I mouse-hovered it and noticed that that was not the full title.
GenyaArikado: Internal and External hard drives are essentially exactly the same devices. The only difference is that external ones are enclosed in a case.
Star Trek geekdom aside, it always pays to be a good listener. When it comes to women and hard drives, not listening can really come back to haunt you.
Fortunately, hard drives are pretty cheap now and come with more storage than even the government would need so there is NO reason not to get a new one when your old one starts it's death knell.
ha ! my new seagate is making noises like very soft tictactitac in very silent room ofcourse
i searched and ppl told me it's normal , i was like insane i thought i couldn't deal with anohter hdd crash !!! i guess i have to get use of this damn sound
i have a hitatchi hard drive on my pc. its 4,5 years old and i think its starting to fail. sometimes i hear this "k-krk" sound like 1 or 2 times a second for a little while and every 10 seconds everything freezes up for a little while. then it comes back to normal and maybe later it happens again. i first noticed this TODAY, and this morning i got FOUR bluescreens, caused by hard drive crash. also, sometimes i get disk boot failure but a little later it works again. its definitely failing, lol!
when ur comp goes into power savings mode. Ur drive/s will turn off then spin back up when active. I hear the same noises as they make when booting up system. can be misleading.
I have a Hitachi 80 GB drive which I bought in 2006. It makes sounds like it's touching the platter from time to time. Miraculously it still works to this present day.
I don't use it for 3-4 months now. But when I did I was making backup every week of my pictures. Now I have a WD drive. They told that they were reliable :-)
i'll back you up with that one! =D my barracuda IDE (lmao old shit) has never failed since 2006 except when i corrupted the xp boot volume and it wouldnt boot but its been reformatted and re-installed and still going like the day it was bought...time for an upgrade though which is a shame but i want a sata drive thinking of a raptor =P
I don't! I saw lots of them dying like mayflies! It was on my informatics school in 2001-2003. We suffered several hard disk death each day because all computers were equipped with IBM Deskstars. I also had three of them at home - a short time later all dead! And my data went off right away!
my old 2 samsung spinpoints 120 GB didnt make any of those noises but ,bough of them got Master boot table crashes in 3 monsths after buy ... really anoying shit X_x
I have a 120GB drive making the same noise as that last one (high pitch wine) and it's been running just fine like that for about a year now. It starts out quite loud but then gets quite after a few minutes which is the strange bit...
It's an older Dell so I figure when that dies it's time to get a new desktop in its place anyway.
My hard drive makes a worse noise than all of those! We've had it for more than 9 years, and it has always done this...what's wrong w/ it!?! i can't find any vidz on utube for any of the sounds it makes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
note: nearly every HD is allready has somthing like 10% bad sectors when you get it form the store, but these sectors where marked by the fabricator as 'bad' (damaged) so they won't be used. you can do this by yourself if you encounter bad sectors. just use a low level format tool which is compatble with your drive.
You can't recover from that yourself, if the data is important you'll have to pay 400 Bucks and send it in a lab!
2. Bad sector killed some files or may be some more delicious space eg. inodes-Table or file allocation table or something like that (HD will seem to 2 emty) you will be able to get most of your data back by useing a recovery tool. next step would be a low level format to mark the bad sectors.
Well I got the S.M.A.R.T warning just over a week ago now and am have been waiting for the Western Digital noise to kick in, it's still holding on though, no noise as yet, have backed up all my important documents and am preparing myself to rush off to the store and purchase a new laptop seeing as I was going to upgrade within the year anyway.
LOL it sure did! Now does anyone know if a light clicking at even intervals of time is a sign of hard disk failure? Cause that's what I hear everytime the computer starts!
I know why they didnt mention the make of the fist hdd and turned over the last one. Because they are they same drive,TBH they shud hav not sed the make of the last one.
sounds like kipkay...

Perfectly normal.
2.5" drives make an extra click sound, because they park off the disk if you don't access it for a short time.
They do this to save power (shut down the voice coil) and for protection (avoid crash if you jar the laptop while it's running).
FerralVideo 2 years ago

There are two ways of common harddrive failures:
1. Head crash (shown in the video here)
You can't recover from that yourself, if the data is important you'll have to pay 400 Bucks and send it in a lab!

This just means that the self diagnosis has encountered an failure. in most cases this means bad sectors!
But if you wan't an head crash you can hit your HD hard while it is on and doing some copy stuff or reading a big file.
Or you could rub it with a wool towel this should weld the head to your wavers inside

LOL it sure did! Now does anyone know if a light clicking at even intervals of time is a sign of hard disk failure? Cause that's what I hear everytime the computer starts!
GaryLiao 3 years ago
That or it's not getting enough power.

Well Windows Vista boots, and applications run normally, and now the ticking is random, is that just read/write, or something worse?
GaryLiao 3 years ago
I'm guessing its just a noisy hard drive. But don't listen to my advice, ask in Howardforums.
