  • This is absolutely amazing and mind-boggling! COngratulations for the projectc developers. Yet, there is a missing ingredient here: Aren't we treating the symptoms of many modern degenerative diseases instead of canging the way in which we eat and live which in many instances causes such diseases?

  • My PC is a lot faster than a PS3, that shit is 10 years old, what a crock of shit

  • @Phoenix700 it computes differently to a PC. Basically the way it processes information is more efficient than a PC. Your mixed up with the speed but unless I explain how a processor works you won't understand. A PS3s strengths is a PCs weakness. PS3s utilize information differently to a PC and perform better in certain areas.

  • how much is playstation 3 now

  • These people need to learn the facts right! You can't play games on PS3 while folding@home is working, damn it. You can only listen to music and check your trophies and thats it. On PC i used to run seti@home all the time even when playing. But on PS3 you can't even watch a movie while its folding! Get your facts straight!

  • Commando .... THIS FOLDING AT HOME SHIT IS USELESS?!? obviously you don't know how protiens work or nvr looked into the papers and research that stanford has discoverd from folding ... No this SHIT as you call it is not useless... Folding for a cure for life or until we have a cure ... 3x gtx 580s and core i7 @ 4ghz and just built another i5 2500k system just for folding ;) join team 36167

  • This is how Sky Net was born! :O

  • The evil corrupt governemnt already knows how to cure cancer, they just won't give it to the public to keep the human population in check. This folding at home shit is useless.

  • can you use folding home while playing black ops online

    ?

  • @kenjasPINOY Nope :(

  • @thebloxxeronroblox But on PC it only uses unused power and runs in the background so on PC you can run Blac Ops

  • @bluebones1928 Kind of, but don't think of it as a PS3 only kind of deal. Think of it as adding a ton of new computers on their distributed computing network.

It just so happens that those computers are Playstations, and they're rather good at processing.

  • if what this biatch is saying is true why dont every one get a ps3 and be closer to a cure against cancer etc much much faster than we would ; ) they can have my bandwith all to them selfs if they want

  • nvm i found it

  • why isnt folding at home on my network thing? where do i find it?

  • @silvervolt7 its called life with playstation now

  • I just found out what this does, amazing software.I ask about it on a forum in 2005 and got reply in 2011.I delete the shortcut for 5 years, i thought it's some stupid demo or overclock program included with drivers

  • @Olengher Are you familiar with the "Google" website? It's better than waiting six years for a forum post...

  • @NewLynxChannel i didn't wait, i drop it.I was surprised when i saw reply.

  • Here goes fanboys saying that the PS3 is more powerful than computers. The PS3 only folds faster because of its cell-processing technology.

  • @GarrettBMXes witch makes it better than the 360, and plus it saves lives

  • @FlickDaBic They were working on an Xbox client, but because the PS3 is more powerful Microsoft is holding back simply by ego.

  • little black boxes? pffttt... my phatty is huge

  • it only does everything ;)

  • 20 times faster if you're still on a Pentium III maybe.

I favour a 2 processor 6 core setup (12 cores/24 threads) highly overclocked and 4 GTX 580s (I'm not biased whether it be ATi/AMD or NVidia, but I'll admit the NV GPUs fold better). That'd be about 60-70 times as fast as a PS3.

  • It only cures cancer

  • show me one person that the ps3 saved from cancer and then ill get on my knees and suck sonys cock

  • They must be some FUCKING SHIT! "Standard" PC.....

  • Look at that, the PS3 has use after all.

  • We should all use our Ethusiast PC gaming power for this software. Imagine...

  • its a real shame this software isn't preinstalled on all machines, even with the amount of contributors F@H have already, its still only the tip of the iceberg of its potential.

  • i dont want somoeone else using my system

  • @josepasillas530 we will remember that if you get cancer. It uses the computer processor only or graphics processor.

  • @josepasillas530 i dont want illegal immigrants using my tax dollars.

  • @blastofo such a bigot.

  • @mit871chellI guess you don't mind giving away jobs and money, maybe we should deport people like you to make room for illegal immigrants?

  • @danyearight Your an immigrant.

  • @mit871chell And you are calling people names on the Internet guess u really didn't get to me cause it took 10 months for me to get back to you. I guess could of been out of the country trying to sneak back in since im a immigrant or something.

  • Now, it's Life With Playstation under "Network".

  • the wii and 360 are a joke compared to the ps3 >D

  • @hazyviews not just jokes, wet dreams 8 X

  • i dont have it.

  • us people with ps3's are good people :)

  • Now theres a good excuse for an PC upgrade. :) Folding@Home is awesome! Recommend it to everyone! Spread the word to family and friends! The more people folding the better!

  • Run it on your MAC or PC as well.

  • PC > PS3 for folding

  • @MrPJJH PS3 has more power than the AVERAGE PC, so overall the PS3 is better. If you want a computer to do better you need a super computer of some riced up neckbeard nerd machine.

  • @southparkgtaca The AVERAGE pc does not fold, the ps3 has an nvidia RSX which is equivilant to a 7600 gt which it is actually BASES off of. The average pc has more power than that. And when your talking about power, GFLOPS is what matters.

  • @codejunki567 Learn something new everyday, I guess.

  • @codejunki567 but it has 7 working cores on 3.2 GHz xP

  • @murreboy It has one core and seven SIMD units, not seven cores.

  • Yet another thing i can rub in my friend's face who owns an Xbox :)

  • i need more members for folding@home

    team name coolmatic

    team number 533254

  • It only does everything...

    even saves lives

  • now the ps3 is saving lives, imaging putting this responsabilty on the xbox, there would be world wide catastrophe, xbox's overheating the couldnt get a days worth of work done. but i doubt they will find a cure for cancer. the cure for cancer is already known, big pharma cant make any money off it because he cant get a patent for it, WHY you ask because its a natural product not man made.

  • I think you're right. Too often in nature a plant or animal that can cause a certain affliction is close in proximity to a natural remedy for the affliction. It would only make natural sense that if cancer isn't man made then a natural remedy should exist. If it is man made, then our fate is sealed.

  • It's a real grat Idea just installed it on my Ps3 and the CPU version on my Pc (the gpu version isn't suporrtet for ATI 5xxx series YET)

it's realy great when the pc is running and not fully used there's no better way to use the extra recources.

  • can someone help me? i run folding home, but i cant turn on the visuals, so i can see the molecule. Anyone know how? ive been through all the settings.

  • press select.

  • There's one thing I'm not totally clear on:

What does it mean by "Join/Create a Team"? I have to punch in a code, but for what? If I join a team, what are the benefits? Will the folding process speed up?

    And also, the leaderboards.

    Somebody tell me, please.

  • i dont understand how does this helps people????

  • @digitalph5 donates power to stanford so they can have the power to figure out new cures

  • @digitalph5, 0mGItzAnINjA is right. by using folding at home, you donate you're ps3, or PC's power to help them study the folding of molecules, which is actually pretty simple when you think about it. but since supercomputer cost such an extreme price, and having to use so many, it would be impossible if they did not take this road, so they decided to get this shindig going, which is very helpful toward people that need it, im a proud donor, i run it a lot, anyway hope that helps.

  • Ha I have a PS3 and I'm saving the world from cancer! What has the Shitbox done?

  • burn houses down, even killed ppl i heard a of a baby burned to death. the airforce has 2500 ps3 networked into a supercomputer to help fight crime. 360 owners owes us a thank you for saving them from disease and the pedo next door!

  • @doommmmmmm Ha yeah I heard the Air Force was doing that..very cool

  • makes me wanna do it i'm jealous!

  • So how do i do this foldingathome

  • Google "Folding@Home" there you can download the application for PC. Ps3's have them installed automatically.

  • kinda feels like a conspiracy huh

  • LMAO!!!!!!

  • go on the official stanford f@h site you'll see that ps3 is MORE THAN 10x MORE POWERFUL THAN THE AVERAGE PC!

  • my pc is 10x more powerful than the average pc (:

the folding uses the GPU graphics processing unit instead of the CPU central processing unit

and a ps3 has a very powerful GPU and so does my Pc as its used for the same thing a ps3 is used for. gaming

  • -.- so your pc is strong get it rated by an official show me proof of it and then we'll talk.

  • well it gets a 3Dmark 06 score of 10,000 wich is 10x a average pc

    my cpu is 2X 3.0GHz and average pc's have 2.0 - 2.8GHz single or 2X 2.0GHz

  • any documentation?

  • why do you need proof to know how powerful my pc is..?

its not like im saying its the fastest computer EVER

  • too many times too many people lie i know how people work pc<ps3. trey 4 life!

  • why would i lie?

  • do i know you?

  • @fergoway2go, actually they really don't use the GPU on the ps3 or any computer much all, its the CPU they utilize the most, and even though you're computer is probably a big and powerful piece of technology, the cell processor in the ps3 will put down even the most powerful desktop CPU's, wither it be, a dual core, qaud core. or even an I7 which is fast, the cell is much more versatile and many many times faster at computing, calculation, and operations a second. but it is very good you help.

  • i know its one of those new powerful things

i think its used in rockets or somthing

but if this cell processor is so powerful whys it still lag in some of the more demanding games?

if your going to say its because of the low amount of ram that's possible as it only has about 500mb or something

sorry about not getting back to you sooner

  • @fergoway2go, thanks for getting back, and its cool. the reason why some demandings games it lags is really because 1[the cell has not yet been fully tapped into, so its not showing what it has, game dev's simply need more time to program at full usage]-2[ram is, and is not the cause, it uses 256mb of ram, which may seem pretty low, but its the worlds fastest ram available, it clock speed runs at 3.2ghz, faster than any other] i will continue this comment on part 2! XD.

  • part-2. ok reason #3[the RSX or reality synthesizer GPU, only has 256mb available to it, but again this is not the real issue, because the GPU and CPU have a hyper fast Bandwidth transfer rate between them, allowing the CPU to take load off the GPU, but there is a fault, the RSX has only 32 dedicated pipelines, vs the 360 xenos gpu, the xenos can handle a slightly larger load because it has 48 unified pipelines, which make it faster at tearing through data. part-3 coming XD hang in there bud.

  • part-3 finale. ok reason #4[the PS3 has an advantage for game DEV'S, because it uses blu-ray disc's, it can store vast amount more data than previous formats, and this allows Developers the possibility to create games with much more story, content. when you look at it, the PlayStation 3 really is leading the way in the console market, it is a remarkable piece of Technology, although there have been times i get the old Xbox out to fool around. haha it all about the consumer. Ty for you're time.

  • you make a good point and im beat haha

it wont be long till that 3.0GHz ram and cell cpu comes into gaming computer market cant wait

do you know how many GHz the cpu runs at?

  • yes i can not wait until it is ready and able for a PC. the cell in the PS3 runs at 3.2GHZ but in its supercomputer Chassis and build they run it at barely over 6GHZ. which is incredible to say the least. so im definitely waiting for that to happen, and that am also runs at 3.2GHz, just the ram would make an unbelievable boost in power for a desktop computer.

  • PS3 saves lives. Xbox breaks down.

  • I just think the video is a bit mis-representing. It says that "playing a video game" can help save lives. Just not completely accurate. More like owning the console allows you the option to help save lives. Simply playing a game has nothing to do this.

I've had this thing running for pretty much the entire time I've owned the PlayStation 3.

  • team 65119

    playstaion 3 (team scea)

    .

  • A truly amazing piece of equipment. You hear that 360 fanboys? A new MORE POWERFULtool. Sorry to instigate the console war, but there are just too many idiots who can't accept Ps3 > 360. Anyways, this is really amazing. All-in-all, the Ps3 is really doing something other than pleasing selfish kids with games. I leave my Ps3 on night after night, all night. Folding@Home, if you have a Ps3, and the capability to leave your Ps3 on a lot of the time, I suggest you do it, as well. Ps3 saves lives..

  • @Sonnyxleet My addition to your "war" I have 2 Ps3 and 3 Xbox I like to switch between the from time to time... There is no war just stupid people who have pride in wat they bought. I like them both equal.

  • @HaxorsRus k

  • @Sonnyxleet how the folding home saves lives?

  • @kenjasPINOY WATCH THE VIDEO AGAIN.

  • the ps3 cures cancer lol

  • Yeah, it kinda is cureing cancer, by simulating a portein "fold", and sending the data to the internet.

  • @kba2b

    it only does everything

  • @kba2b don't bash Folding@home. R u a scientist?

  • The opening line of this segment is bs, folding @ home is the business

  • fuck u dood this stuff actually helps

  • lol "dood"

  • Folding Team 60148!

  • What are the chances if you leave your PS3 on for this and it overheats

  • it will never over heats. i have left it for 24 hours and it still fine..

  • My Ps3 has been on for at least 2 weeks. I'm not even lying. It gets hot, but it cools down with a simple fan. It gets hot, but it's never overheated, even if I don't use the fan.

  • room temp? air con? and when you use a cpu at 100% "when technically there designed to work at about 90%" you slowly where away at it shorting your cpu's life span this happens with both ps3s and pc's

but by the time runs out of puff itll be like 3-4 years old witch by then you would have a new console

so dont hold back on folding but restart every day or so and give it time to cool down even

  • Ps3 is the best

  • This isn't a video game.

  • Took me a while to figure out what this app was, BUT WOW PS3 makes me proud

  • I don't get it. I know it is useful to harness the power of millions across the globe, but couldn't they just purchase some insane amount of PS3s, line them up, and use them only for the Folding@Home app?

  • wouldn't you feel like a better person knowing that you could possibly save millions of lives,I think that's the point of it.

  • I'm saying if they really wanted to solve all of this stuff uber, uber fast, just build a supercomputer that can do only one thing extremely well instead of using thousands of PS3's that aren't meant for this purpose.

  • Yeah. That would take a lot of time to build. Why do that when the Ps3 can do it with 20-40 of them? AND it can do it faster. Don't you think if a supercomputer could do it faster and better, they would make one? It's HARD. And it's time killing. Ps3 ftw.

  • ohh thats what this is... cool

  • This makes me proud to own a PS3. Nothing beats an entertainment system that can simulanteously save lives!

  • @BigHw09 PS3 for the win!!!

  • @BigHw09

    Definitely cool

But it only works when idle

  • Isn't this dangerous? Giving an organization access to all our computers and gaming stations at home?

  • There is a matter of trust involved in Stanford, but I imagine that they have a reputation to uphold.

Also, what Folding@Home does is provide a platform for science applications (protein folding tools) with little access to your system to be downloaded and updated, these applications are 'signed' with a digital signature to ensure they weren't modified by anyone else.

The science apps are fed work by folding@home, and contact it when it needs more work. They have no access to the machine.

  • Thanks for the info :)

  • There is a trust factor in a big university

This would be just like running a application. Currently, it has not been hacked by others to make it send spam and stuff

They say its more secure than the browswer you are using to see this

  • Join Team: 164979

  • When the PS3 is idle I use it to F@H for team HardwareCanucksForum ( 54196) GO CANADA :) looking for a team.please join all welcome.

  • You got that half right. A Core 2 Quad or a Phenom processor is not anywhere near as fast as a Cell Processor in terms of floating point performance. The Cell Processor, used in the PS3, is also used in supercomputers; however, a decent GPU (a Radeon HD 4770 or GeForce 9800 GT) should be a lot faster than the Nvidia RSX GPU on the PS3.

  • I did a bit more research, and you are indeed correct.

  • The thing about the RSX is it uses some of the awesome CELL Processor to render images a LOT faster.

Yes, The cell is WAY more powerful at folding than any other CPU on the market.

  • Yeah, but the GPU is shit. It uses an Nvidia GeForce 7800GT. And most developers still use the traditional method of assigning graphical workloads to the GPU because it's easier and most effective for most architectures. There's no denying that developing for the Cell Processor is very hard to develop for.

On GPU folding, even a mainstream GPU like the Radeon HD 4670 or GeForce 9600GT will leave it in the dust. In CPU performance, it is faster, but only 'cause it has 7 processor cores.

  • Yes, but due to the fact that the Cell processor helps the RSX render stuff, the RSX becomes more powerful than the Xbox 360's Xenos.

    Just saying.

Devlopers just havent found a way to use 100% of Ps3's power...Uncharted dident..Killzone 2 dident...Maybe Uncharted 2 or God of War 3 will.

Either way, Uncharted/Uncharted 2 IMHO Look better than crysis maxed out.

Just the way EVERYTHING reflects on Uncharted in 1080p makes your eye balls wanna fall out.

  • Err... they can't use 100%. If the game did use that much, it would stutter a lot and would become completely unplayable. The max. CPU usage you can have with no stuttering/lag is 75%. Oh, and you probably haven't played Crysis Warhead if you think Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2 look better. I'm sorry, but it's visual quality cannot be matched. When you look at environments, particles, explosions and water, you'll notice what I mean. Oh, and you can go to res. up to 2560x1600 in PC.

  • Ive played Crysis maxed out. Looks awesome.

But Uncharted 2 looks sweet. Look up a HD gameplay vid of it.

God of war 3 looks pretty amazing..Water effects are nice.

Crysis waters effects reflects everything too.

  • Whatever! Crisis is shit. All it's got is good graphics and good phsics, everything else is shit.

  • Wow, nice ad hominem. GTFO.

  • Really? You're dumb...

  • IRONY. You were the one that never addressed any of my points. GTFO.

  • Oh, I think I meant to comment on someone else. And since when do I Have to address your topics? Am I not allowed to speak what I feel like speaking? You're still dumb...

  • "You're still dumb..."

Your comments prove otherwise. I'd be surprised if your IQ were even 80.

  • Wow, IQ isn't accurate at all. Quit talking, little obsessive one.

  • Using age as an argument just proves what I said. Keep going.

  • "RSX becomes more powerful than the Xbox 360's Xenos.

    Just saying."

That's always been known. Only thing in which the Xbox 360 wins is in texture fillrate. PS3 has higher compute power.

  • every one should have this installed!

  • Folding @ Home rocks!

  • Idiot.

  • More jealous Xbox Fans

  • quidiffenizerdikshan

  • just stop talking about how ps3 cell is that and this, cause no one knows whats really in the cell, who knows, sony could be hidding something away from us

  • Actually, the Cell architecture is well documented, and there are software development kits and linux distros available for free to the public.

What is not well documented though, is the hypervisor that runs on one of the SPE's of the Cell in a PS3. It restricts access to the GPU by homebrew apps.

Despite this, people have been able to get some respectable realtime rendering to happen using the Cell only, and not the GPU. There's vids of it on youtube too.

  • yah pcs are so fast that they lag all the time! they get fuked up if you use them for hours n shit nig, pcs are useful only for internet, chats, programming etc..

  • haha you are funny..

  • and pr0n...

  • I wonder what you used to make this comment... one way or another your using a PC.

  • It is good that the PS3 is doing F@H but a computer with 2 GTX 295's is much more powerful then a PS3...

  • if your talking about graphics, then yes, a computer with those cards will be more powerful, however folding@home requires processing power, and PS3 has the equivelent of a Supercomputer in processing power.

so its WAY better than a computer !

  • Actully F@H is much more GPU intensive then CPU intensive. If you download the GPU version you get a lot more done then you do if you use the CPU version.

Besides a gaming computer can be much better with CPU's... The Skulltrail motherboad can have 2 CPU's so you could have 2 quad cores which would mean you would have 8 cores clocked anywhere from 2.4GHz up to like 4GHz.

So yeah a computer does more then a PS3 on F@H.

  • Comment removed

  • you say that the Skulltrail motherboard does more "processing" than the PS3 because it has 8 cores as well ???

then can you remind me how much the two Quad Cores and the motherboard together will cost ?

i'm pretty sure its more than $ 1500....

and how much is a PS3 for about the same processing power.....

i could buy 3 PS3's for the same price as the PC.

which in turn would give me 24 cores to FOLD with...

    hehe !

  • But only 6 of the 8 cores on the PS3 is used. And stop arguing about PC or PS3 just contribute! I have both my Gaming PC AND PS3 "folding"

  • Kausheelkumar is just arguing coz he cant afford a gaming pc

  • Oh god the puns, so cliche

  • my 3850 agp crunch's faster than the ps3...
