I can not even emagine that someone could not open their mind, use their ears, and think how beautiful this peice of music is. It is made even finer by the two gentlemen who play it. It saddens me that twenty eight people possess the malice, nay hate, to press a button labled "dislike."
There may be some older master, eg Heifetz, are better than the above two. Given recording technology is better nowadays, most people would consider the product of the two great violinists as the greatest.
Dear Music Lovers , Please Don't argue , I am sure no one in music village is a fanatic . It's what is in common that brings us to this clip ! Maestro Perlman has a great Tone , It is also true that not All Legends are Masters at all Expressions . Perhaps someone else's view would help us evolve as Musicians and Listeners . I personally have listened to some unlucky no name Musicians who played this piece by far better ..Pls also listen to Heifetz and Piatigorsky , just different !!
I saw Itzhak Perlman play in Chicago with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 10 years ago. I was lucky enough to have seats about 5 rows back from the stage. I had a perfect view of his left hand. I play the viola and so I thoroughly enjoyed watching from that angle. It's majestic watching someone's fingers fly like that.
@aaaaKEALEaaaa Give them a break. I wasn't one of them, but there are some very valid reasons to dislike their performance.
For one, this rendition is a throwback to the 1950's, where people didn't give a shit about historical interpretation. They play as if Handel was one of Paganini's buddies. It sounds very un-baroque.
Zukerman does a good job, but Perlman's presence nullifies his efforts.
@Timrath Tis true.. The performance in 1941 by Jascha Heifetz and William Primrose is much more fluid that this performance but my preference is toward this one.
Well, they are playing Händel/Halvorsen not Händel. Most of the varations are Halvorsen's own based on the theme by Handel and therefore aren't really baroque. Playing the piece 'romantically', they might just be acknowledging exactly that.
I find myself in a unique position (at least in my life).
I literally can't get through the day now without having listened to this at least once. That's never happened to me before, I usually get bored of any one piece of music if I lsiten to it repeatedly.
@flextra96 do you not understand that Perlman is 1. freaking AMAZING and 2. he can't stand because he had polio as a child and it left him part crippled!! Don't criticize people until you know their situation!!
PS I love perlman!! he is one of my favorite violinists of all time!!!!!!!!
@ace16807 /watch?v=HUF9neEN81I&feature=related There's the Heifetz recording. Go to 5:40 and tell me what you hear. Then, listen to this video at 5:45. Yep, Heifetz of course doesn't try to play the run at all, and Perlman totally does...OH WAIT.
So even though Perlman is one of the most esteemed violinists in the world today, lauded by the world of music as one of the all-time greatest virtuosos, you and your friend, "some fairly experienced players", you guys just happen to have the incredible perception that the rest of the world doesn't to realize that Perlman sucks. I mean, seriously, did you hear how he like didn't play that note in that scale?! What a loser! ... Pssh, go back to your speed metal kid, leave good music alone...
@Deathzwei you're right, if you play music exactly the way it is written it loses it's musicality and is bland, but I still don't agree with changing something to the agree that he does, especially when it's making it especially easier. Just sayin'.
@Surtak example: the scales at 5:50 he doesn't play the whole thing, he just hits like 5 notes, then the high one. My friend and I (who's a fairly experienced violin player) have noticed the same things in other pieces he plays too. Definitely not even comparable to other great violinists throughout the ages. Granted he's still WAAAYYYY better than I'll ever be, but I'm not going into music and don't practice for hours a day. He's still good, but there's still other great violinists out there.
@MrSquirrel13 A great violinist doesn't have to play a music piece as exactly as it was written. If you judge a performance solely based on how "correctly" it was played, rather than how well it was played, then I don't think you should criticize Perlman's playing.
@MrSquirrel13 Yeah, the fact that he only seems to hit a few notes in that run says a lot about how proficient of a player he really is. Same with Heifetz in his performance of this piece- hell, Heifetz doesn't even try to play the run and we all know how crappy of a player he is, right? OH WAIT.
@BaDitO2 wel first of all its not violins its one violin and one viola and second it isn't a violin solo its a duet and thirdly it is called arrangments and this piece sounds amazing
Perlman isn't too accurate in higher registers, but then again he has large hands and I do recall him saying it was much harder for him than most other violinists.
Just incredible. I'm a countryman of Halvorsen ( a Norwegian), and my grand-grandfather was born near Halle, just like Handel. And therefore I feel like like this is almost my inheritance. I've loved Handel since I was a teenager. I don't know why. Instinct, maybe? My grand-grandfathers name was Eberling. The Eberlings was masters of Tyrol and Salzburg. Any Eberlings out there?

11 People disliked this? 9 of the eleven must be college students being snobby and 1 perfectionist upset that they added a couple grace notes to the original piece and 1 guy who is ticked because he couldn't play either part on his best day. I've always admired Perman and Zukerman. This piece is a great testiment to the tight musical bond they forged over the years.
From what I've learnt, they use cloths or towels because the sweat from your chin and neck can rot the wood or something.
and the shoulder rest is underneath the instrument. I can't tell if they're using one, but the shoulder rest is optional; some people find it easier to play without it, while others can't play without it.
ahhh.... esta cancion me llega al corazon y proboca que hayan muchas emociones dentro de mi... no me canso de escucharla. Es tan hermosa, que las palabras no se acercarian a describirla.

Who are the baroque composers then, in your opinion? Lassus, Perotinus and Dufay? Dude, get your facts straight. ^^
Anyway, I already conceded my overlooking that these are Halvorsen's variations, not Handel's, so my original point was a dead horse to begin with.
But dude, get your facts straight.

Hm, do they both play without shoulder rests? Or are they the ones that are underneath the violin and don't hook onto the sides

@Sortudinho A lot of times when I watch professional violinists, they use towels instead of shoulder rests.
I think these two are using towels too.

@squishedjellybear
From what I've learnt, they use cloths or towels because the sweat from your chin and neck can rot the wood or something.
and the shoulder rest is underneath the instrument. I can't tell if they're using one, but the shoulder rest is optional; some people find it easier to play without it, while others can't play without it.
