When Robert.E.Howard created Conan and the rest of the Hiborian World,the favorite villains on the cinema,was the indians,and i think the fact that he was texan,an west-american,inspired him to create the picts,the principal enemies of Conan,as people to looks like native americans.Have stories wrote by Roy Thomas that Conan appeared as a scout working to the Aquilonia on the forts on their collonies on the middle of the Pict country,just like a scout cowboy on the Old West.

The Romans used the term to define the foreigners that were less civilized than them and that's where we got the term from, way before it was used on Turks, Mongolians or Vikings.

The Cimmerians are a kind of pro-British noble savage race of people in the Conan world. Conan was meant to have broke the neck of an ox before he was a fully grown man so this clip is quite accurate to the books...
