The captain of this flight is surely a hero. He did all he can to save the lives of everyone on board, but obviously he could not do anything to alter the force of impact-He tried his best to just ditch the plane safely, but unfortunately, the plane broke up upon landing.

I know it's real easy to second guess it, but I would've called the guy's bluff when he didn't blow up the plane immediately after figuring out that he couldn't get to australia. The fact that they were drinking whisky, didn't know the basics of the task at hand with regards to fuel practices of airlines, and were just overall stupid should have clued him in that these guys wouldn't know how to build a sand box in the desert let alone a bomb. Even still, a great job by Captain Abate.

Credit to the Pilot for his complete skill, yes people may have died, but he did save as many as he possibly could.

Airlines and Aircraft manufacturers are so shocking that in the complete history of Hijackings before 9/11 nothing was done to strengthen or tighten up security on-board the plane, especially to the most vital part, the controls. Yes 9/11 was terrible and RIP to those who died, but it seems like no-one gave a damn about people until that happened. As a comment below does say, wow

When you ditch, you have your air speed low, get your wings level, and pull the nose up. This guy missed some of the basic steps.....

don't forget that he was being hit and beaten up while attempting to land. probably by the time the hijackers realized what was going on, and they stopped beating the pilots, it was too late to maneuver the plane into position. they were hijacked and time and calm were not on their side, therefore the two captains did ok.

@VidAlienX The nose was up, the engine acting as scoops, as heard earlier would break the aircraft up and pull the nose down. No flaps or power and the hijacker was trying the pull the nose down which built up speed so hard to slow down. moving the wings to break the waves. breaking the waves prevented the whole air craft to jult forward which under certain circumstances would be worse. what would you do in that situation... i know what i'd do. what this guy did was heroic.

Sounds a lot easier then it is to do it.. Wind has a major affect, and also without engines there is not much you can do...If ditching was this easy, they would just save a little bit of fuel every flight and ditch into the ocean..

Obviously you do not much about planes, or you are absolutely the most amazing pilot in the world, but I am going to go with the former.
