@tradguitarplaya He clearly states that squats are not for him because of how tall he is. Not everybody is built for squats. It's about longevity in the sport of bodybuilding. If you do things that hurt your body more than they help, your career will be cut short.
Well when you live in a small town in Indiana you gotta work with what you have. If a smith machine is all he has for squats, it's better than nothing.
My comment was for him saying that Smith machine is better for squat than free weight. He has no clue about squatting I guess. Well, if you haven't got a power rack then there is nothing one can do.
He's right, most tall guys find it very hard to squat.
Dave Drapper use to do lot of squats, but I think he said that he wore out his knees cause the bio mechanics of a tall person make the squat harder for them.
I agree whole heartedly. Im 6'5 and squats SUCK for me. Ive been trying different things because I love the exercise but its murder on my knees. Good form and long legs just aren't compatible on squats without ALOT of work...and pain
I'm 6'2 and used to think the same thing. But if I squat like a powerlifter it's actually no problem. A wide stance and twisting the knees out while sitting far back takes a bunch of tension of my knees and puts it all in the glutes and hams where I need it. Front more emphasis on quads I do front squats. Narrow stance however is still a pain in the ass.
Yea you're right about using a powerlifter's stance. Ive experimented with that as well. The only problem I ran into was not being able to hold as much weight in a front squat as I can traditionally. So my glutes and hams took off growth wise because of the powerlifting stance but the weight I was holding for front squats was causing my quads to lag behind. I still use them both frequently however because they are very effective and I like to mix it up.
He isn't a powerlifter, he's a bodybuilder! Who cares if his squats aren't ATG?
If he feels the movement is enough to work his legs, then what he is doing is fine.
Have you seen Ed compete? Giant, dry, sweeping quads, TINY waist!
Stop the hating until you can achieve a physique as impressive as his!
