  • marasafin has got a point.

if you compare, they at least use the same rackets.

recent rackets are too good. thats not fare.

  • All tennis 'fans' (teeny boppers) care about is who is the best ever...well, I've got news for you, you cannot compare, there are too many variables. Who cares anyway? Just grow up.

  • What else does Federer have to do to be considered GOAT by all these retards?

    - All the 4 majors

    - By far more consecutive weeks as N1

    - 5 straigh Wimbledon and US Open titles

    - 16 majors

    - 6 Masters Cup titles

    WHAT ELSE???????

  • Sampras is the best!

  • for me sampras is the goat........

  • @guiguitebeka why he didnt win the french

  • @TennisCoachno1 because he sucks

  • @MattyOyola217 i forgot to put the question mark in. It should say 'why? he didnt win the french' in response to him saying sampras is the goat. So you classify the 2nd most successful player ever in terms of slams as 'he sucks'. righhtttttt so everyone else apart from feds sucks?

  • @TennisCoachno1 If can really appreciate what Federer's tennis game play represents then you MUST feel that everyone else sucks; though in many cases some don't. I think Sampras sucks but ONLY regarding his game play, technique and strokes. Unnatural and awkward backhand (you must know the story), serve & volley EVERY single time (effective but boring if performed every 9 out of 10 points when serving). Did you notice Federer's wide veriety of strokes? He can manage from the baseline like volley

  • @MattyOyola217 Dude Federer IMO is the best thing that has ever happened to tennis im a massive fan! There is no need to ask if i noticed his strokes to me he is the GOAT if not him laver

  • These two played doubles together for the US davis cup team. What a dream team it was.

  • Johnny Mac wasn't seeded in 1990?!?!

  • AWSOME VIDEO

  • Epic lol the way the score is written. That were the good times of tennis.

  • the idra of tennis

  • @gesc1989 lololol

  • yes but this match wasnt the guard changing from macenroe to sampras, mcenroe stopped being a major contender in 1985, lendl was thru after early 91 he won or reached final of aust open..but yes this was the start of sampras youngest winner of us open age 19yrs 18 days. give or take a day.

  • the guard changed in 1985 us open final mcenroe lost his title and world no1 ranking to lendl. this and a couple other semis was as close as mcenroe got to winning another major.

  • @peterpeterxxo the guard changed again in 90 when sampras beat lendl in the quarters.and then it changed again at wimbledon when federer beat sampras in 2001 i think.

  • An excellent video package. Very entertaining. A changing of the guard, I fear!

  • Is funny, McEnroe behaves like a spoil teenager and Sampras behaves like a mature grownup.. Oh the irony...

  • mcenroes forehand honestly looks sooo weird to me

  • @TheFatKid128 Does it?...

  • @TheFatKid128 funny thing is backhand too!!

  • Listen to McEnroe's GRUNTS!

  • Just love it when the game is over and Sampras sits down, nod his head a little and probably thinking - "I've just beaten John McEnroe in US Open, sweet!" =)

  • The change of rackets and power game beat Mcenroe from about 85 onwards. Players like Curren, Lendl, Becker, Edberg were coming through. Hard to compare who would win at peak form from...Laver, Borg, Federer, Sampras, Becker, Mcenroe.

  • mcenroes got no power on his groundstrokes

  • @joedragon88 idk something makes me think its for net play only

  • How yummy was Pete back then??? ^_^ *typical girl comment--ignore the tennis, talk about the cuteness* lol.

  • Sampras looked pretty young there- but it also shows what happens when one can control his sexual energy- this is what gives the advantage.

  • Great game! Alaywas loved watching both players on the court: Sampras with his coldness and Mec with his temper, which was just a show apart.....lol....

  • McEnroe in 1984 would have beaten any player from any generation, he was incredible, and destroyed and humiliated the great Jimmy Connors in the Wimbledon final that year, losing just four games in a straight sets massacre, the biggest drubbing by any player in any major finals over the past 50 years.

  • @Kenmorfdublin mac didnt have enough power... when then game got faster and players hit harder he stopped winning majors... maybe he was the best with a wooden racket ... maybe not. But certainly not with carbon fiber!

  • @telmolicious haha what do you think tennis originated from wooden rackets, the true fundamentals of the game will never change no matter the technology, thats why I think its funny when people say you use your wrist to generate power, spin and racket head speed.

  • @Kenmorfdublin total agree

  • @Kenmorfdublin nadal only lost 4 games to federer in the 2008 french open

  • Man, no matter how much I see McEnroe my overriding thought is also just how odd his groundstrokes looked, haha.

  • Haha this ump is still working a lot of majors.

  • why don't either of them shake the umpire's hand?

  • @brentisverycool Because that tennis was star wars and they were afraid the umpire would strike back.

  • I played against McEnroe and Sampras in a training match.

I was standing on one side and Sampras and Mc Enroe were playing as double on the other side and I won both sets against them 6:0 and 6:0 !

  • @PornobrillenAli I know you were teamed with roger federer , ivo karlovic, rafael nadal .....i believe that- two and a quarter players vs Sampras and Mcenroe..............Or you were the ballboy at the time???you must check your dream

  • McEnroe pure genius...

  • This was the day I was born. I have a lot of respect for these guys.

  • This match is so similar to when Sampras plays Federer at Wimbledon. Watching the old master getting frustrated by a talented new kid, while the new kid remains totally quiet and focused throughout the match

  • @toby0cooper yeah is very similar...now is the turn of Roger to lose against youngest...

  • @tiopappo Looking at the Federer Djokovic match right now it's looking like his dominance might not have finished yet!

  • @toby0cooper sorry, i repeat not now today....maybe in 1 or 2 years hehehehe...i hate "nole"

  • @tiopappo I definitely wanted Roger to win, but I have to say I quite like Nole. He gets alot of hate for appearing arrogant but seems like I nice guy to me! I hope the person to displace Fed is gonna be Grigor Dimitrov myself, pretty much just a younger version of Fed!

  • Just like Pete to ace his way out, as he did vs. Agassi in big games. This is a guy who did not fold under pressure or get nervous when it was time for the kill. The type to never crumble with the lead on Sunday at The Masters, say. He was not a Greg Norman or a Rory McIlroy type. He knows it too. He had good sports psychology. Mac played good in this match, just not good enough.

  • @DexterHaven49

Love this post, and its totally true. Pete was clutch, and in later matches than this, when he matured and KNEW he was the best, you could tell he thrived on the big moments. Almost EVERY big match he played against an Agassi, Courier, or the best of his generation, he won.

    I miss these days!

  • Best US Open ever: 1990. Agassi and Sampras won 12 straight matches to get to the final. People forget, 6 each. They demolished big names: Lendl, Becker, McEnroe. Youngest average age for any male final ever too: 19 yrs. old!!

  • After watchig Mac play some matches i actually have more respect for him than what the media portrayed, its a shame he couldnt have played in my lifetime, but then again we wouldnt be seeing impressive net play like this.

  • Mac was only 31, and his movement was really not very good....

  • they seem to be using totally different grips than today, i mean, nobody seems to be western, and there is no spin... totally other times (bad for me dont judge me :P )

  • these guys can beat nadal if they were younger this time.

  • Steve Ulrich was a chair umpire at that time !! :S

  • that's tennis, not this top spin shit in these days!!!

  • @jjayster dick

  • is mac a pedophile?

  • Is Mac using a woodie? Mac came from a different era. Peeps should stop comparing and enjoy his genius. It's unfortunate that today's game is replacing the art that Sampras and Mac displayed.

  • yeah, i was badmouthing mac the other day, then i realized that i was being a shitface

  • surprisingly good quality!!!!!

  • Mac's volleys and serve were as good as advertised, but my god those were the ugliest groundstrokes (especially off the backhand) I've ever seen from a pro...a hall of famer no less!

  • Absolutely amazing performance by John.

  • Two things: 1) The fact that Mac was in the SF 6 years past his prime is amazing and somewhat proves players could compete cross-generationally. 2) The Air Trainer's Mac is wearing are the most comfortable shoes ever made though the toe did not last long for tennis.

  • ugh...some of the people commenting on this video are so vulgar. obviously you are unable to make a decent point. Games change over time and with technology. So either you accept it or stop watching. Quit comparing. What a bunch of annoying twits.

  • 3:23

    Don't shout at Spock!!!

  • 1:17 I would like to have that serve motion.

  • @Swordsman808 i see a point in the fact that the points are too quick from this style. but you know what's really feminine in the men's game? two handed backhands used by men, who should have enough power to blast it by you with only one....like pistol pete did so many times with that golden right arm. it'd be nice to see a little more of this style used. of course, since wimbledon grass became as slow as a clay court, the style is being made extinct

  • Lol, Mcenroe even grunts on dropvolley!

  • wowwwww...feliciano lopez has a better backhand than mcenroe

  • Awesome backhand returns by Sampras. He had it all even at this young age.

  • i really dont understand how macenroe was so successful with such a dreadful technique...

  • McENROE was a brilliant player. He controlled the court, especially the net and dictated that if you were going to beat him, you had to hit amazing winners one after another. Sampras did just that, hitting amazing shot after shot, but from a tactical standpoint, McEnroe conrolled this match.

  • Back in the good ol days when an 85' was the norm : D

  • @Swordsman808 man your hater! It's far from dead. It's a beautiful style of play, forces the returner to have to think and actually play smart right off the bat. It takes an athletic individual who is confident on their serve to do it! Federer still utilizes it in moderation. You really think Johnny Mc get slaughtered even now? ROFL.. He still plays the style in the LEGENDS TOUR and WINS!! Sampras won his last GS less that 10 years ago. Its possible. Current player Michael Llodra uses it.

  • Attacking tennis is much more exciting than all the matches today. All rallies, all the time regarding of the surface is not thrilling. Both these players could rally and serve and volley. They, along with Rod Laver, are the best. Mac had 77 singles and 78 doubles titles and the best touch. He is up there, too.

  • Two great serve & volleyers collide makes a great match.

  • 4:10, "There's the break"

    Great commentating lol

  • Johnny Mac is my second favorite tennis player of all time.

  • FOR ME SAMPRAS IS THE BEST TENNIS PLAYER EVER

  • and so started the boom boom 90's..

  • Mac's reflexes, even when getting older, are still ridiculous here. Not easy to consistently return Sampras' serve.

  • Mac was still playing in 1990? Holy christ!!

  • McEnroe's serve hurt him post 1984. Too many guys after that started to get better looks at it and return more effectively. If he had a more powerful serve he could have won at least 5-6 more slams than he already did. His volley always held up, but the serve didn't hold up as well anymore.

  • los medios puntos geniales estos dos jugadorazos

  • nice bandana, axl mcenrose

  • mcenroe has a huuuuge cock

  • Sampras breaks, McEnroe breaks his racquet and commentator "here's the break"

  • love how mcenroe doesn't shake the umpire's hand

  • @gabe228 neither did sampras, lol

  • Two great players!!

  • For all you people who think McEnroe makes cruel tirades you should see Jimmy Connors going over to the other side of the net and stamping out the mark of his ball that the line judge called out! MCENROE IS NOT A CHEATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow, that kid's pretty good. never heard of him. i bet he turns out to be a pretty good player!

  • beautiful serve-and-volley from both players. people who cannot appreciate the genius of johnny mac should go fuck themselves...

  • Fantastic tennis from Pete... hearbreaking to see how the ravages of time erodes the reflexes of the very best... in this case, Johnny Mac....

  • did they know other thing that serve and volley style?? i´m sorry but is kind of boring watching two guys playing all day long serving and run to the net before the opponent does XD

  • 6:54 - look at that bored return from sampras, too casual

  • i think thats why serve and volley end... amazing passings..

  • some thing along that line

  • and also better returns, modern raquets, polyester strings, power tennis.

  • @luisdjokovic

they have slowed down all surfaces making it harder to serve and volley in grand slams

  • it was tough being a mac fan post '84 - god how i hated this match (even though i have it on tape still)... couldnt make it thru 1/2 this vid

still, i never saw their 1st meeting about a month b4 this match where mac lost 6-4 in the 3rd... id like to watch it in its entirety if i could

  • We are of like mind, I dig your comments. If it makes you feel any better just think about how much older Mac was than Sampras here, what like 32 versus 19 or 20.

Plus it was Pete. Even though something about me hated Sampras, the guy was still a complete -- very complete -- player and a badass.

  • that's what pisses me off even more - this was 1 of mac's last hurrah's (he was 31 here)...

he was just ejected from the aussie open that year and it took him half a yr to get mentally back in the game - this was his moment

sampras did nothing for almost 3 yrs after winning this and said he was just a 19 yr old kid on a serving streak

plus, it robbed us of seeing a mac/lendl semi (i wanted boris to beat andre in the other semi so mac could beat him too, but that didnt happen either...)

  • you gotta love big mac's tantrums.... they where hilarious.....

    YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!!!

i mean.. c'mon i know it is not the right thing to do but... its McEnroe.

  • all these shitfaces that are badmouthing mac. just don't know his genius. he's the greatest serve and volleyer in the history of the game.

  • @bjornsiborgsi arguable

  • @bjornsiborgsi For sure, Sampras got that technique from him.

  • @bjornsiborgsi This is no where near todays level. John isnt athletic enough and his strokes are grandma style. Sampras is still good enough to play because of his serve which is 100 times better than mcenroes lol. Sampras is the 2nd best in history next to federer and nadal might even take the number 2 spot sooner or later

  • @2012bilderberg he is 50 no shit he isnt athletic enough.

but at his age now he'd still whoop your ass.

  • @cj397 wtf He cant beat me now I play tennis on tour buddy. The game has gotten bigger, faster and more powerful. Evolution bro, we learn off each other and move forward. No he cant beat me since I am in the top 300 in the world. Nice try though.....

  • @2012bilderberg Doubt your 300. what's your name and exact rank. Any respectable tennis player would not go on the fucking internet and write childish stupid shit.

  • @2012bilderberg if you talk shit like that, i even doubt that you ever held a racket in your life ;-)

Mcenroe is one of the alltime greats and was nearly unbeatable in his prime. He had one of the best hands in the history of tennis! He was one of the biggest stars and an exciting player too watch. If you cant see how talented he was, then your ignorant and dont know shit about tennis!

  • @1978utreg excuse me ? I never said he wasn't talented douche bag !!! The game he had in his prime just wont cut it in todays era. FACE the facts buddy lol .. He would get crushed since todays game is much more athletic and tough. TRUE facts ..

  • @2012bilderberg they have different material and with the rackets and training that they do today he would be one of the greatest in this area because even a blind man can see how gifted he is. He won more tournaments (even in singles) then Federer and still holds the best win / loss record ever! He wasn't a hardhitter but he had a lot of other things that the players of today don't have. Hingis is a good example because she 'ruled the tennisworld and wasn't a hardhitter eather!

  • @bjornsiborgsi IMHO Nadal would beat the hell out of Pete in his prime, those slow volley would be a piece of cake for Rafa passing shots

  • @bjornsiborgsi he takes it up the ass

  • @bjornsiborgsi he takes it up the ass and pete sampras is dumbass

  • @bjornsiborgsi People are entitled to express their opinions, don't let it bother you. Opinions don't change the reality of McEnroe's genius. IMO, Edberg was a better net player and Sampras had a far better serve than Mac. John had the advantage of a lefty serve, which always made it a bit easier for him at net. One of the best S and V ever but not the best, IMO.

  • @bjornsiborgsi after sampras

    but biggest touch and feeling

  • @bjornsiborgsi sampras is dumbass

  • @bjornsiborgsi

    no he's not...

  • @bjornsiborgsi Mm...I think it would be hard to argue that Sampras isn't the best serve and volleyer of all time. Federer probably would have been even better if the strategy still worked with today's courts and racquet technology.

  • I think MacEnroe has the worst behaviour on the ATP World Tour that I have ever in person ever seen in my life. He abuses his racket above the beyond, he hides under the sponser banners, and he abuses, yells, and swears at the umpire really, really badly. If you agree on this, reply on this message because I'd like to see what you think about John MacEnroe's bad behaviour on the court, under the sponser banners and at the umpire. Thanks,

    MegaTennismaster

  • Definitely. But, unfortunately, everyone knows of McEnroe because of this! Sadly... I went through a McEnroe phase too... despite his horrible behaviour, I think he's still pretty chill outside of the court though. At his advanced age, however, he probably should stop howling at the young ball kids (although I guess that's what people pay to see sometimes).

  • couldnt agree more. 4 years ago he played an exhibition match against henri leconte here in copenhagen and was about to leave the court if the judges didnt change the call. A genious tennisplayer with the best touch ever. And the worst behaving on court.

  • worst behaviour? maybe you never saw nastase play or ion tiriac play a davis cup match. Mcenroe was nothing compared to them in terms of behaviour and sportsmanship

  • dude mac's grunts are so annoying

  • Watching this again, think about how good Sampras was:

Even though Mac was much older he was still playing some good tennis but he never beat Sampras during their regular careers. That's saying something because you know Mac is a strong competitor who will try everything he can to win.

  • Thanks for bringing this. Mac on his way out, Pete on his way in. A very interesting time period.
