What's really crazy is the fact that some people believed, in those times, that you could actually survive a nuclear war. Sure, you might survive the nuclear attacks, but would any of these facilities be sufficient to house its occupants for years or decades?
Even if there was no more fighting, the radiation on the surface would make anywhere above grounds uninhabitable.
Or the bunkers were just designed to keep command working untill the V-bomber force had delivered its nukes on Soviet Russia
@AudieHolland It really depends where the commies decided to strike. I can imagine if, say, London and Manchester were hit, all operations above ground would be transfered below ground as a purely precautionary measure.
@petesstuff Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. This bunker, it was revealed after the cold war finished, was directly targeted - these bunkers would not and were not designed to survive a direct hit.
Thanks for posting the video. It's always chilling to know that only 25years ago the threat of nuclear holocaust was a distinct reality, and that these places ever existed
@ged150774 Its amazing that within 15 to 20 years the threat has been totally forgotten - maybe thats a good thing, maybe not. My dad volunteered in a ROC bunker. We had neighbours coming around in the early 80s asking that "if in the event of nuclear war could my dad get them into 'his' bunker"... you just could not imagine that sort of thinking nowadays... the threat was real, the public perception was real. Thanks for watching and commenting.
isnt it rediculous let the Presidents of countries go Mano o Mano in a ringfight
The system let innocent people die and the weapon industry florish, especially of poor countries with oil and stuff. As long as they have resources they are a victim to the kapitalist and whatever other communist countries.

i have been down this bunker well worth a visit i and some friends went down at holloween for a ghost walk it was a laugh and interesting, maybe they might open one or two more to the public,
if you have your summer holidays at withernsea not far away or going on the ferries at hull and have time worth a visit the only down side they make crap tea
There is a bunker at Pilgrims Hatch in Brentwood near to me that I have visited and I have to say its a very chilling experience, only those inside would have survived and there were plans made for the general population who were not expected to survive and those that did, well............,
@tileajb1 That would be Kelvedon Hatch? Thats open to the public too. There is one just up the road from here in a place called Langtoft, though its pretty well ruined. Other ones I know of are Anstruther and Beachy Head, but there must be loads of others. They were directly targeted by the Soviets, and were not designed to withstand a direct hit... so the chances are these people would have probably perished too.
@trainfart Thanks for watching! It was a strange place to be, it had a very peculiar feeling about it, not least because we were told that the bunker was known to be directly targeted by the Soviets during the cold war.
@Bastimon Thanks for commenting. It goes to show how well looked after some people would have been while the rest of us vapourised in a nuclear attack! These bunkers would have been used, amongst other things, as centres of government. Some points in the bunker have 30ft of concrete around them in all directions. Thanks again.
