The people in the civil war were not fighting for black freedom. black freedom was just an element to weaken the south to make the north stronger because the north did not need black due to industrialization. north didnt like black people as much as the south, they just needed to get something that they wanted. I remember seeing this movie when I was 14. This whole section really shook me up, especially when they purposely drowned those slaves in the one scene. That really disturbed me. These were human beings, pleading for their lives & they just threw them overboard. I can't imagine what kind of horror those people must have felt as they saw the fate that awaited them. Even after all these years, that has stuck w/ me.
This is horrible, We are learning this in school and this is just sad to think anyone could be treated this way. But what is even more sad, is the fact it took us that long to realize slavery was bad.

This must have been a particularly bad slave ship. Even in those days this would have been considered wrong, if only for economic reasons. I'm not a historian but I imagine slaves were only any good to the transporters if they arrived alive to be sold. Dumping slaves in the sea shows poor planning, they were running low on food so got rid of the least valuable slaves. The greed to make money made the slavers put more on their ship than they had room for.

There were (and still are) many internal conflicts in the continent. This notion that Africans were betraying their own families and neighbors is false.

This must have been a particularly bad slave ship. Even in those days this would have been considered wrong, if only for economic reasons. I'm not a historian but I imagine slaves were only any good to the transporters if they arrived alive to be sold. Dumping slaves in the sea shows poor planning, they were running low on food so got rid of the least valuable slaves. The greed to make money made the slavers put more on their ship than they had room for.

@mbrisendine123 Although i completly agree that this was wrong, this had very little to do with skin color. The slaves being sold to the Spanish, Dutch and Americans were being sold by other Africans who had captured them in exchange for precious metals and weapons. They were purchased in large amounts because it was relativly cheap. It didn't become a racial thing until the Americans realized that their slaves just happened to be black making that association. Again, i agree this is wrong

I had an RE lesson earlier today and half of this clip was shown (up to the part where they throw the dead bodies into the sea) and my teacher said that it got worse from that point so she wasn't going to show us. By this time I was already quite shocked at what happened- especially when I was told those things really did happen to the poor black people. They didn't deserve that... any of it.

@KaIanari by 1691 law was passed in the english colonies that said if you were black you were a slave, it became racial. being black meant you were a slave and being a slave meant you were not equal to those who were white, which means whites saw blacks as less than them. why don't you research and learn your own history a little more?

Because the whites were outnumbered, it was more prudent for them to throw the insubordinate into the ocean rather than risk their subjugation over the slaves. Seeing as slaves were extremely lucrative and expensive, overall the sacrifices were inconsequential.
