  • i think she wrote the song your so Vain about Mick Jagger

  • @curvy71 No. Mick Jagger accompanied her on the chorus, tho. When you listen to the interview, it seems that the song just developed over time without anyone in particular in mind. I always thought it was about George Hamilton!

  • @fatdanios well who knows maybe we will find out eventually someday.

  • @curvy71 i always thought that also, it was about Mick Jagger...I guess we were all wrong after listening to this interview.....I still think she was thinking about him when she wrote it!!

  • @Prepster954 i agree

  • I always check in the mirror for stuff hanging from my nose while I walk into a room full of people. Better to be vain than to look like a buffoon.

  • So a guy walks into a room full of "Bobs" and just for fun says "Hey Bob!". Of course they all think he's talking to them. I love that Carly Simon's playing the same prank with this song - "I'll bet you think this song is about you". They're all so vain they probably do. It only works if it's about all of them. Why do some people insist on finding out who the one guy is? Glad to see many here get it. Some apparently never will :-\.

  • It's not about Mick Jagger. He was in a studio nearby and she invited him to sing backup on the song.

  • Supposedly she wrote the song about Mick Jagger.....

  • @hazor777 Not! Mick recorded the song with her. Warren Beatty is supposed to be the target, but Carly never admitted at all.

  • @AndreBalaio she dumped Warren Beatty for Mick Jagger

  • she told me who it was about but I promised not to tell anyone.

  • But the song IS about them, whoever they are! They may be vain, but they're right....it is about them!

  • well lets be honest she cant possibly tell who its about, cause then they would know the song WAS about them....and it takes away the whole point lol

  • 4 people know this song is about them.

  • she has a man voice omg

  • its about her asshole cos listen. "You Got a brown eye in the mirror and 2 blew up your face" hahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Old ladies don't sound like that when they talk unless they're smokers. Boo to smoking.

  • @tulkasplane : Really? And how would you know if she does or not? Her speaking tone does not indicate that she is a smoker, you idiot. Lots of women have a low tone speaking voice who dont smoke.....

  • She got the most brilliant revenge on every last one of her exes by making them all wonder if the song is about them. Smart lady.

  • @ShampooCell I agree; she is a smart lady!

  • I know exactly who this song is about...Out of respect for the person that the song is about and out of respect for Carly, I won't reveal who it is, but, I'm 100% sure about who it is.

  • She admitted it's about David Geffen.

  • Only two people know who the song is really about...

I'm guessing none of you are one of them.

  • I think its about Warren Beatty. So did he apparently. When the song came out he sent her flowers and a thank you note. He's so vain he thinks its about him.

  • She's spending her whole life trying to spin the story that the song wasn't a vindictive rant against Mick Jagger. Eventually some people will believe it.

  • @Landrew0 maybe she's simply telling the truth and it's not melodramatic enough for you , and others.

  • I just love her voice.

  • YOU WALKED INTO THE PARTY, LIKE YOU WERE WALKING ONTO A YACHT!

  • FYI- Re: Carly's racial ethnicity, her father was Jewish (The "Richard L. Simon" of book publishers "Simon & Schuster"), and her Mom, Andrea was a civil rights activist and singer, of black and German descent.

  • I still listen to her greatest hits on a cassette tape.

  • @laaspen I married the girl who was her double, still married after 32 years, check out facebook or you tube

  • Please stop, Carly. The voice is gone, the songs are stale. This is a woman who has never grown in any way musically. Just living in the past. Don't do any more songs from the Great American Songbook. It comes across phony. How many ways can someone sing 'You're So Vain."

  • WHAT! and all this time I thought the song WAS about ME

  • I always thought it was about Warren Beatty..

  • @darganx

I thought it was about me, along with another 200,000 guys at the time

  • love her

  • The hard part is getting words that rhyme with heroin.

  • lakings13, me too

  • she has moments where she sounds like Michael jackson...when I was younger Janet jackson came out with a song called Son Of A Gun with Carley Simon in it & at 1st I really thought it was Michael until Janet said Carleys name!!!!

  • so Eisner goes from ruining Disney to interviewing once-hyped celebrities???? only in America.....

  • Fun fact: This song is about me.

  • she looks like maria duval

  • gurl u look better as a brunette

  • Carly Simon is brilliant

  • OMG - too funny! LOL ... everyone has known since this 1st came out in 70s it was about Warren Beatty, who Carly dated briefly

  • Comment removed

  • 7 Tears is clearly a mental defective. Please don't feed the trolls.

  • I think she said it was mick jagger in the radio

  • She claims that the song is about a number of people she knew. But I know that the line about "cheating (or sleeping) with the wife of a close friend" refers to actor Ryan O'Neal who fooled around with Farrah Fawcett, the wife of his close friend Lee Majors. They were separated and that basically ended the marriage.

  • Oh my God! I know who it is! I've studied the song for 30 years and I've got it! Our school janitor in grade 5!!! Now I have to figure out who killed Paul ...."Paul is dead" played backwards on Abby Road!! And all the rest of the subliminal messages I need to find!!! Good grief......it's a song about anyone that's an ass....we've all met them.

  • the song is really about slugg63

  • @nakedBison69 Well, at least she was thinking about me.....

  • carly herself revealed to me her deep and abiding crush on slugg63

  • @slugg63 HAHAHAAAAAAA!!! Nice to think of it that way though, specially in dreamland. :)

  • @slugg63 Damn! You were almost funny there! And semi-clever!

    Try again!

  • @swiggy58a That was a comment a year ago, and you need to reply? Now we both look stupid.

  • What a voice, she's gorgeous.

  • Part of the original lyric which she changed was, "you're so grey, I'll bet your teeth are falling out too. You're so grey, I'll bet you hold your hay-er on with glue, don't you?

    DON'T YOU?"

  • @Seaventeares LMAO. is that really true?

  • @ezzieE09 Apparently, but maybe she chilled slightly so the acid wasn't industrial strength in the version released.

  • seaventeares' teeth are falling out

  • @nakedBison69 haha LMHairy BollocksO naked Bi-son.

  • seaventeares the hair bollocksO

  • I can completely relate to what she is saying. I have many times wrote two separate songs or ideas and they somehow morphe into one idea.

  • I can't stand Mr.Eisenberg .Carly is pretty kool she is no Stevie Nicks. K!

  • I thought she was talking about Warren beatty

  • Which year is this ?

  • No doubt:

She was talking abotu MICK JAGGER, and nothing more. I dont know why she didnt say it here.

We, people of that age can remember how she talked about Mick when an interview about this song.

In fact, MICK JAGGER VOICE APPEARS in te original version, second part.

MICK JAGGER WAS THE MAN WHO PUT AN EYE ON THE MIRROR AND KNOWS THIS SING IS ABOUT HIM

  • Yes, Jagger appears on the track, but it's NOT about him. In a 1989 interview, Simon acknowledged that the song is "a little bit" about Warren Beatty but said that the subject of the song is a composite of three men from her L.A. days. In 1983, she told the Washington Post that it is not about Mick Jagger. And as far as being about Geffen, since he's gay, I'd be extreme surprized if he's the subject.

  • @Vampirevalaquia Carly did note that the line "Your scarf it was apricot" was inspired by Mick.

Mick does sing back up on the song. I hope the name is never revealed...Can't anyone keep a secret anymore?

  • kellyGreen5555 cannot keep a secret anymore

  • @nakedBison69 What?

  • It isn't really vanity if the song *is* about him.

  • Yes, the mystery about who it was was the best part. Still, the yacht line was so great.

  • Could it have been Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger, Kris Kritofforson, David Geffen, David Bowie, David Cassidy, David Steinberg, Cat Stevens or any one or more of countless others ? Maybe we will never know anything for sure except that this woman is a slut of global proportions.

  • Carly Simon resented David Geffen who was head of Elektra records back in the day, because she felt that Geffen put more effort into promoting her rival Joni Mitchell than her.....it's not about failed love, it's about business, money & fame!!!

  • @nebulisblack

Wow you. How do you think a great hit must be written. You would be amazed if you knew how many hit songs were made. The thing is that not every artist is humble enough to admit how they did.

  • what the fuck are you talking about, nebulisblack? that IS how songs are made. All of them.

  • Just revealed that it was about David Geffen, her label boss. Too bad...she should have kept it a mystery. I always thought it was about MIck..especially since he sings backup on the song.

  • Actually, she's specifically said it wasn't Geffen.

I doubt it is any one person. It is probably a composite of several people who pissed her off at one time or another.

  • That was on another cut on YouTube. Play the song backwards and it says David.

  • But that doesn't mean it was David Geffen, does it?

Still, I think it isn't about a single person. Maybe each verse is a different person...

  • She has the best album covers.

  • A lot of people have rumoured that the Lord Farquaad villain character in Shrek was based on ex Disney CEO Michael Eisner, seen here interviewing Carly Simon.

  • te gek nummer

  • Da is wel

  • nobody can be interesting every day in the world

  • The song is about Warren Beatty, read her book and stop saying bullshit.

  • @caravaggio31 haha, WRONG

  • I think this is Carly Simon

    but im not sure

  • Who is this song about again? I've heard it before but i can never remember,

  • It's a rumour that this song is about Warren Beatty.

  • @mecanoqueen

For sure ...you are right and it is not a rumour... WB became a nightmare to her !

  • I'm suprised; she got to say all of that without being interrupted by the host guy...

  • cool

  • I love you Carly Simon

  • The biggest sexiest mouth in the biz! And she is talented too!

  • She looks great for being about 63 (assuming this was made in '08).

  • @ericmtl Abso-friggin-lutely!!!

  • Yes ! I love her sexy mouth ! I could kiss it for hours!!

  • @lakings13

    ... and stop there?

  • @lakings13 Kiss it for hours... she could suck golf balls with straws with those lips..!! Hmmmmm...

  • I LOVE HER!!!!!!!! AND THIS SONG

  • in the book she says it was about the arronance of warren beatty , not jagger &

beatty did have her . so did jagger who did backing vox .

  • Who cares who the song is about...if that is your intrest go read the tabloid press! As yau2blove suggests the interesting aspect is the beauy of Carl Simon as a person and her honesty and sensitivity. The fcat that she has, after all thses years, protected tthe identity of the man who inspired such lyrics is a testamony to her integrity...but now comes the ultimate scoop!!!!! It was actually written about a plumber who lives in the Bronks called Joe with whom she has a torrid affair ha ha ha!!!

  • NO PEOPLE THE SONG IS ABOUT JAMES BOND DONT ANYONE LISTEN TO THE LYRIC,S (SAN cONNERY) AT HIS YOUNGER DAYS ...AND WHEN YOUR NOT WOUR WITH SOME UNDERWORLD SPY OR THE WIFE OF A CLOSE FRIEND...DOESNT THAT SAY ANYTHING ????

  • It's all about Bob Dylan!:)))

    It is!!

  • Her voice sounds terrible wooooof!

  • That's often how great creations come to pass. You get one good idea and shelve it because it's only good. Then a second one sometime later. And sometimes a third. Then, suddenly you realize that all together...In fact I think that's how Edison invented the light bulb!

  • The original story about this song is that it's about Hugh Hefner. She knew him when she was quite young.

  • Bob Dylan!!

  • The song is about Mick Jagger. You can here his backround voice in the original recording.

  • She just gave the most honest answer. I love it! It's not a publicist's dream answer nor one that any star would want to claim to, but it's honest. That makes me like the song even more and like Carly Simon even more. She has ultimately proven she is not vain. I love this answer!

  • She gave some info... and the person's name is David.

  • The song "Your So Vain" is about Mick Jagger from Rolling Stones...they used to date each other...

  • I thought it was Warren Beatty.

  • I think she and Steven Tyler are twins separated at birth.

  • it was a great song

  • Thanks for this clip. It was indeed a great song. A classic by Carly to enjoy listening to still.

  • it still is:)

  • It doesn't matter if she is a half white half black, the matter is she is a great singer.

  • @deerdys That is so racist!

  • if the song was about Beatty or Jagger is a foregone conclusion now

  • i know theres so much commotion to do with this 'hit' ie who its about blah blah blah

but the real reality should be addressed. Was it even that good of a song in the first place?

  • Yes, its a great song! Themystery of who it was about didn't make it a great song, it was a great song all by itself. At least it wasn't one of the million songs of the 'You left me, so I'm just gonna cry' type.

  • Yes, a great song from Carly in the 1970's.

  • she still looks great! Nice lady.

  • I love to find out how great songs come about.

  • Not Warren Buffett, Warren Beatty. I'd hit it in 1974 and I'd hit it now.

  • I was joking. (Yeah, right!) No, I really was!

  • but that song is about him

  • Carly Simon is half black.

  • She's actually 1/4 black, her mom was half.

  • She now looks like a morph between Mary Tyler Moore & Carly. But hey! I'd do that twanky in a New York minute

  • me amarro nesta música

  • Wow! The plastic surgery is taking a toll...why can't celebs just grow old gracefully for crying out loud?!

  • She looks great for someone who`s gone through a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery due to breast cancer. But what do I know eh !

  • Fair play, I had no idea. I should research these things before I go opening my mouth... ;-)

  • i just saw an interview where she said this song was written because of her relationship with gary coleman. she said every time he went down on her it felt like she was giving birth to a baby seal. so there now the mystery is solved.

  • Carly is one of the sexiest women of the 20th Century. And most talented.

  • She was very sexy when she was younger. She has a beautiful singing voice. You're obviously just too much of an inbred stupid motherfucker too see it.

  • why do people have to discect and know every intricate personal detail of what an artist meant about every little line in their songs, just shut up and enjoy

  • becasue james was selfish

  • Why can't these incredibly talented couples remain married?

  • I always knew she was goin to write a song about me eheh........

  • i dont think the song "Bless You Ben" would have been as successful as "You're So Vain"

  • she looks like steven tyler

  • lol ego very nice! kind of true though..

  • WOW...you are spot on..I had never seen a close up of her,,,,good god...I was in love with what I thought I saw.....jesus..now I am gonna be ill...

  • I have been in love with that smile for over 35 years. There are women I have known whos greatest attraction to me is that they possess a similar smile.

If I ever met that Ms. Simon in person and she turned that smile towards me, well.....

I would be floating on clouds of joy for a week.

  • Carly Simon still looks good.

  • stunning...always has and will be...luv her.x

  • It's not about Jagger. He's singing backup on You're So Vain. It's a composite of several guys she dated when she lived in LA including Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson. As a writer myself, songs are often about more than one person.

  • The song was written before her marriage to Taylor. Why wound she write a revenge song to someone she loves? I would say Jagger and beaty combined as well as just general story telling.

  • sweetpeakilla013

agreed. James Taylor is the opposite of vain!

  • either james taylor or warren beatty. the 2 are the top suspects of all time. either way, both men deserve the honor because they have the talent to back it up.being immortalized in a song is quite a feat in itself.

  • She won't tell who it is but everything points to Warren Beatty

  • she looks like on her 30s or something...

  • I cant back it up, but could the mytery vain man be Liberace?

  • I think there's something interesting about how her disfluency shows just a bit here. Carly Simon is an inspiration to all stutterers.

  • Wish it was Warren Beatty, he's better looking than jagger...hahahaha..... Anyway, what a wonderful song. She's so damn talented.

  • A lot of the tunes back then were 'mysterious', so that we could relate to them. As for Mick, he sang it with her, so how could it be about him? Still, a good tune!
