@curvy71 No. Mick Jagger accompanied her on the chorus, tho. When you listen to the interview, it seems that the song just developed over time without anyone in particular in mind. I always thought it was about George Hamilton!
@curvy71 i always thought that also, it was about Mick Jagger...I guess we were all wrong after listening to this interview.....I still think she was thinking about him when she wrote it!!
So a guy walks into a room full of "Bobs" and just for fun says "Hey Bob!". Of course they all think he's talking to them. I love that Carly Simon's playing the same prank with this song - "I'll bet you think this song is about you". They're all so vain they probably do. It only works if it's about all of them. Why do some people insist on finding out who the one guy is? Glad to see many here get it. Some apparently never will :-\.
@tulkasplane : Really? And how would you know if she does or not? Her speaking tone does not indicate that she is a smoker, you idiot. Lots of women have a low tone speaking voice who dont smoke.....
I know exactly who this song is about...Out of respect for the person that the song is about and out of respect for Carly, I won't reveal who it is, but, I'm 100% sure about who it is.
I think its about Warren Beatty. So did he apparently. When the song came out he sent her flowers and a thank you note. He's so vain he thinks its about him.
She's spending her whole life trying to spin the story that the song wasn't a vindictive rant against Mick Jagger. Eventually some people will believe it.
FYI- Re: Carly's racial ethnicity, her father was Jewish (The "Richard L. Simon" of book publishers "Simon & Schuster"), and her Mom, Andrea was a civil rights activist and singer, of black and German descent.
Please stop, Carly. The voice is gone, the songs are stale. This is a woman who has never grown in any way musically. Just living in the past. Don't do any more songs from the Great American Songbook. It comes across phony. How many ways can someone sing 'You're So Vain."
she has moments where she sounds like Michael jackson...when I was younger Janet jackson came out with a song called Son Of A Gun with Carley Simon in it & at 1st I really thought it was Michael until Janet said Carleys name!!!!
She claims that the song is about a number of people she knew. But I know that the line about "cheating (or sleeping) with the wife of a close friend" refers to actor Ryan O'Neal who fooled around with Farrah Fawcett, the wife of his close friend Lee Majors. They were separated and that basically ended the marriage.
Oh my God! I know who it is! I've studied the song for 30 years and I've got it! Our school janitor in grade 5!!! Now I have to figure out who killed Paul ...."Paul is dead" played backwards on Abby Road!! And all the rest of the subliminal messages I need to find!!! Good grief......it's a song about anyone that's an ass....we've all met them.
Part of the original lyric which she changed was, "you're so grey, I'll bet your teeth are falling out too. You're so grey, I'll bet you hold your hay-er on with glue, don't you?
Yes, Jagger appears on the track, but it's NOT about him. In a 1989 interview, Simon acknowledged that the song is "a little bit" about Warren Beatty but said that the subject of the song is a composite of three men from her L.A. days. In 1983, she told the Washington Post that it is not about Mick Jagger. And as far as being about Geffen, since he's gay, I'd be extreme surprized if he's the subject.
Could it have been Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger, Kris Kritofforson, David Geffen, David Bowie, David Cassidy, David Steinberg, Cat Stevens or any one or more of countless others ? Maybe we will never know anything for sure except that this woman is a slut of global proportions.
Carly Simon resented David Geffen who was head of Elektra records back in the day, because she felt that Geffen put more effort into promoting her rival Joni Mitchell than her.....it's not about failed love, it's about business, money & fame!!!

Wow. what a talentless way to write a song. Stolen phrases for the sake of clever. RETARDED. She's so vain, she probably thinks her music's still relevant.
Wow you. How do you think a great hit must be written. You would be amazed if you knew how many hit songs were made. The thing is that not every artist is humble enough to admit how they did.

Who cares who the song is about...if that is your intrest go read the tabloid press! As yau2blove suggests the interesting aspect is the beauy of Carl Simon as a person and her honesty and sensitivity. The fcat that she has, after all thses years, protected tthe identity of the man who inspired such lyrics is a testamony to her integrity...but now comes the ultimate scoop!!!!! It was actually written about a plumber who lives in the Bronks called Joe with whom she has a torrid affair ha ha ha!!!
NO PEOPLE THE SONG IS ABOUT JAMES BOND DONT ANYONE LISTEN TO THE LYRIC,S (SAN cONNERY) AT HIS YOUNGER DAYS ...AND WHEN YOUR NOT WOUR WITH SOME UNDERWORLD SPY OR THE WIFE OF A CLOSE FRIEND...DOESNT THAT SAY ANYTHING ????
That's often how great creations come to pass. You get one good idea and shelve it because it's only good. Then a second one sometime later. And sometimes a third. Then, suddenly you realize that all together...In fact I think that's how Edison invented the light bulb!
She just gave the most honest answer. I love it! It's not a publicist's dream answer nor one that any star would want to claim to, but it's honest. That makes me like the song even more and like Carly Simon even more. She has ultimately proven she is not vain. I love this answer!

A great talent and a great writer. Definately a seminal force along with Taylor and the other folk breakout artists. And I bet she gives a great gobjob.
I have been in love with that smile for over 35 years. There are women I have known whos greatest attraction to me is that they possess a similar smile.
If I ever met that Ms. Simon in person and she turned that smile towards me, well.....
It's not about Jagger. He's singing backup on You're So Vain. It's a composite of several guys she dated when she lived in LA including Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson. As a writer myself, songs are often about more than one person.
The song was written before her marriage to Taylor. Why wound she write a revenge song to someone she loves? I would say Jagger and beaty combined as well as just general story telling.
either james taylor or warren beatty. the 2 are the top suspects of all time. either way, both men deserve the honor because they have the talent to back it up.being immortalized in a song is quite a feat in itself.
A lot of the tunes back then were 'mysterious', so that we could relate to them. As for Mick, he sang it with her, so how could it be about him? Still, a good tune!
i think she wrote the song your so Vain about Mick Jagger

I have been in love with that smile for over 35 years. There are women I have known whos greatest attraction to me is that they possess a similar smile.
If I ever met that Ms. Simon in person and she turned that smile towards me, well.....
I would be floating on clouds of joy for a week.

I would say Jagger and beaty combined as well as just general story telling.

agreed. James Taylor is the opposite of vain!

either james taylor or warren beatty. the 2 are the top suspects of all time. either way, both men deserve the honor because they have the talent to back it up.being immortalized in a song is quite a feat in itself.

She won't tell who it is but everything points to Warren Beatty

I cant back it up, but could the mytery vain man be Liberace?

I think there's something interesting about how her disfluency shows just a bit here. Carly Simon is an inspiration to all stutterers.

Wish it was Warren Beatty, he's better looking than jagger...hahahaha..... Anyway, what a wonderful song. She's so damn talented.

A lot of the tunes back then were 'mysterious', so that we could relate to them. As for Mick, he sang it with her, so how could it be about him? Still, a good tune!
