God of Indian cricket maybe, it's still arguable that he is the best batsman of his generation. Sangakara and Kallis both have a higher average, Ponting had the pressures of the number 3 spot and captaincy yet only averages 2 less and Lara was just more pleasing to the eye and destructive than all of them. Still a great player but nowhere near the best ever
@dashgar Sachin does have the pressure of 1 billion people expecting him to do well every game. And personally I think Sachin is most pleasing to the eye, but it's just personal preferance.

I know he's very highly thought of in India, but everywhere else he's just another great batsman.

One of the main reason Australia's team was so strong was Ponting, he was their best batsman by a fair way. Tendulkar has played with Sehwag, Gambhir, Dravid, Laxman, Azrhuddin and Ganguly who are all considered great players (or even champions) so Tendulkar has clearly been in a top team

God of Indian cricket maybe, it's still arguable that he is the best batsman of his generation. Sangakara and Kallis both have a higher average, Ponting had the pressures of the number 3 spot and captaincy yet only averages 2 less and Lara was just more pleasing to the eye and destructive than all of them. Still a great player but nowhere near the best ever

I never said they were better than Tendulkar, only that their average is higher and it is difficult to separate the five (Sachin, Ponting, Lara, Kallis and Sanga). My point was Sachin isn't any better than a number of other players around, so to raise him to the level of a god is rediculous. I know he's very highly thought of in India, but everywhere else he's just another great batsman.

And I didn't just pick my 5 batsmen based on averages, otherwise I would have had to pick Samaraweera, Dravid and Trott. The five I picked were the five who have dominated world cricket for the last 10-20 years. The were/are all elegant, technical, intimidating and carry the hopes of their country every time they step out to bat. They are at the same time incomparible and inseparable, which is why I love cricket

@dashgar the eason why sangkara and kallis i called in medicore players see... sangkara has just played 6 matches against worlds best team and avg just 41 , avg less then 40 against england while avg just 30 in england... avg just 36 in india, avg just 39 in SA.... and he never played that pakistani bowling attack of akram , waqar mustaq, etc... he has not faced walsh ambrose... to me he is always medicore and kallis also has almost same story

@bhatnagarpawas, you downplay Ponting because of the quality of players around him and then take one of Tendulkar's teammates and say he is as good as Ponting. You can't have it both ways. One of the main reason Australia's team was so strong was Ponting, he was their best batsman by a fair way. Tendulkar has played with Sehwag, Gambhir, Dravid, Laxman, Azrhuddin and Ganguly who are all considered great players (or even champions) so Tendulkar has clearly been in a top team

@dashgar sehwag came in the team in 2001 which is almost 13 years of sachin carrier gambhir came after 2005 around 18 years of sachin carrier... laxman was nobody before that knock of 281 in 2001 check out his avg before that match its hust 27... just dont go by names.... dravid came in 1996 but then he was also avg batsman.. till 2001.... well gangully... is always an avg test player who call him great in tests? remove england series in 1996 he is very poor in tests....

although Bread mans period was 1930s and late 40s which was really different than sachins.at that time cricket was tough.u had to play without helmet and other facilities and unfortunately his career was spoiled coz of WW2 and he could not play that much cricket but he still maintained an average of 99 in test crckt.whereas sachin did not face such troubles in modren crckt and played more matches than breadman. but having said that
