This was a bad answer in my opinion. Such knowledge is tremendously useful. It's useful to that void we all feel. When we discover something new and amazing about nature, it can change lives. The Hubble deep field image tweaked something inside of me. The true beauty of the universe sunk in. Thanks to science we now know every atom in our body and in the Earth, came from exploding star matter. Learning what the universe is, can give us an answer as to what we are.
I think the same question has been asked some centuries ago to f.ex. Newton, or Galileo and even if they had almost the same answer (no use at all), we wouldn't have reached our level of civilization if they wouldn't have done it... ;)
