I was probably there for these. Tom made me (and later my brother and sister-I'm Tom's eldest) drive him to and from the Birchmere on our learner's permits. Great music. I loved DuffEY (don't forget the "e", people!!) kissing his mando at the end of his ride. And MandoMuchacho, it was the Red Fox Inn, 4940 Fairmont Ave.,Bethesda.
I'm so envious that you got to be there and I didn't! There are a few great bluegrass bands out there but the Seldom Scene went beyond greatness and created a catagory that only they could fill. Unfortunately, there has not been another group since that has the sound that John Duffy brought out of the Seldom Scene regardless if John Starling was singing lead or Rosenthal. They had a sound and tightness that hasn't been duplicated. Much like the Osborne Brothers, Seldom Scene stands alone.
@dsdeutsch Thank you for the kind acknowledgement, Mr. Deutsch. It strikes me how profoundly The Seldom Scene shaped and moved so many of us - - and how much their music still does. Then & now. (There's a later album by that title I think - - No pun intended!) I could go on and on - - but I would so much rather be at a table at The Birchmere or the Silver Fox (the club in Maryland where they often played mid-70s?) laughing and basking in The Seldom Scene sound! Thank you ever so much!
am so thankful to come upon these clips from 1979 Birchmere gig! I was fortunate to see the Seldom Scene perform in 1975, '76, & '77 at (I think) the Birchmere, and a club in Silver Spring. John Duffey, Mike Auldridge, Ben Eldridge, John Starling were all I think in the group. These Birchmere clips you've made it possible for us to enjoy again are a priceless gift!! They do indeed suggest the intimacy, relaxed warmth, wit & virtuosity which made the boys indeed "Seldom" seen. Thank you!!
Yeah! As i mentioned, this is a live show recorded back at the station for archival purposes. Problems existed in getting the signal back to WETA. Plus the 2" tape was dubbed down to 3/4'' and eventually (years later) to 1'' tape. Hopefully the spirit shines through. Dave the director
ralph and carter were great, but didn't have the contemporary talent that duffey and the scene had, and if you don't like that..check out my yt page and kiss my @#$k.........
I'm glad you got to see them with Duffey. I am still a BIG Scene fan and although their sound with John is forever silenced, Lou Reid does a fantastic job and "The Scene Sound" still comes through. Lou and Fred do a great job, as does the others. Needless to say, Ben is like a rock!

Thank you for your comment BanjoBoy. Remember, it was only shown once when it was broadcast live. Glad you could get through the raggedy video.
