  • I would highly recommend this series to anyone! It is very well done and really gives insight to the real America and not the one everyone thinks we are.

  • I'm trying to think of the American equivalent of Stephen Fry. .............

    Fail.

  • @SirDruhHu

Certainly none living. We could use a modern-day Twain.

  • This is now on Netflix.

    Just sayin.

  • I was fascinated and watched every episode back to back. I particularly loved the scene at Lake Powell where he rented a houseboat with a hot tub. The scenery was extraordinary and I felt myself feeling envious seeing how much he was enjoying himself. I must do that before I die.

  • My ex-wife doesn't respond anymore, lol

  • This is a very common format for shows produced outside the US. Their countries are already where the US is heading (the crapper) and they have total government control of the media so they can't make fun of their own people in this way. Making fun of those that are more successful has always played well in the sticks. Most of the people he talks to are too nice to assume that the point is to make them look stupid.

  • @Huboons That you don't understand why foreign countries often poke fun at you is one thing.. to start looking for it in the wrong places in order to leave spiteful message's is just sad.

  • @apestaartje321 Sorry, that's the whole point of this show to edit interactions with Americans to make them look as foolish as possible. That's what it is.

  • @Huboons How much of this have you actually watched? And how well are you familiar with Stephen Fry? If he was the kind of person who'd travel to the states just to patronize and mock (wich he's not), then he would certainly do a better job of it.

  • @apestaartje321 I'm very familiar with him. His whole schtick is mocking anyone whose beliefs differ from his. And I watched this clip. The clip is nothing but him mocking Americans. The Americans are just too stupid to know that's what hes doing.

  • @Huboons You are obviously not familiar with him.. he's outspoken about religion, wich probably means he hurt your petty little feelings at some point and now you are wearing hate goggles. Take those off and watch the rest of the program. What youre saying is just a projection of your own paranoid egocentric nationalism.

  • @apestaartje321 "You are obviously not familiar with him" Yes I am. Quite frankly its you who are projecting here. I want the US to split up, not exactly nationalistic is it? Guess what else, I'm agnostic. I'll let you look that up and figure out why his opinion on religion is irrelevant to this. You, like the people he makes fun of are too stupid to know what he is doing.

  • @Huboons Well those were the obvious motives, so I guess I should ask then, what instead makes you say this? By wich way are you familiar with him? What exactly is he doing, wich apparently everone apart from you is too stupid to pick up on?

  • @apestaartje321 "Well those were the obvious motives" No they were your "paranoid egocentric" projections. The bottom line is you are not capable of understanding your own biases and no explanation of how they are interfering with your ability to be objective can help you.

  • @Huboons Your American, and Americans are unlikely to know Stephen Fry. They are also very religious, so when I find an American disliking someone as likeable as Stephen Fry it's perfectly reasonable to assume thats the reason. You know this as well as I do, so unless you stop writing such drivel and explain what youre problem is, I'm going to assume its something even more infantile.

  • @apestaartje321 Like I said, you are incapable of recognizing your own biases. Your last post is proves my point better than anything I could say.

  • @Huboons By defenition people can't recognise their own bias, and according to you that excuses you from explaining yourself? This is getting childish on top of silly. The only thing I even have to mention is you haven't watched the rest of the program so thats what I'll end with.

  • @apestaartje321 All of your arguments are based on assumptions and stereotypes.

  • @ShittyMcShitfuck What would those be?

  • The ridicule America is getting is ridiculous. Seriously. The US may have a lot of problems but it has so much more good and amazing qualities. I love the US. If you're a person hating on America or Americans or both then that says a lot about you.

    Coming from a British Canadian.

  • just realised the man rubbed deer poop on his jacket then onto his face.... not much to say about that. Right?

  • @SuperDN70 agreed, but i don't think he does it for that purpose. he's better than that.

  • I'm so glad his dad turned the job down... If he was American... Uhhh it's make me sad the thought...

  • @shomitb yeah, he might have actually been funny... perish the thought

  • @shomitb yeah! No offense to the Yanks, but we are just cooler (¬_¬)

  • @shomitb He would definitely be less pretentious if he was an American.

  • @ShittyMcShitfuck Ironically, you're confirming a classic American stereotype, by considering Fry 'pretentious' for no other apparent reason than that he's eloquent, well-read and has a posh accent. Feel free to prove me wrong.

  • @seblasian I consider him pretentious for the remarks he makes about Americans throughout the series, and many of those comments are based on stereotypes and pure ignorance which he undoubtedly picked up in Britain.

  • @ShittyMcShitfuck I'm not picking up on those.. could you give an example?

  • Comment removed

  • Does anybody know the the name of the music between 0:26 - 0:30? (Especially the trumpet part)

  • I want a "Stephen Fry in Canada"!!!!!!

  • @Cnd1867 Nobody cares.

  • @disneyking81 Well apparently you care enough to comment on my comment....you know I'm always told Americans are ignorant and rude, you just proved those rumors completely wrong

  • I think Stephen Fry is an educated man and as an actor he is accostom to being the center of attention or rather the focus of it.

I think the public expects to see this side of him whenever he is seen in public or on television.

I'd like to see the real man far away from the camera's eye.

Maybe this is who he realy is...

  • How right you are Jeeves !

Everybody in America secretly wishes they could talk like Stephen Fry

  • @6116merl How true. Its so unfair that Brits think we're making fun of them when we do..

  • @6116merl Wrong. Speak for yourself.

  • @preemptivestrike20 I'm always only speaking for myself.

What is it I have said that you take issue with ?

BTY that's quite the you tube "handle " you have there. What do you actualy imagine your self to be ?......

  • @6116merl What I am or am not is none of your business. In your comment you said that "Everybody" in the US wants to talk like Stephen Fry. If you don't see the error in your comment then you are beyond help. -Regards, and next time don't resort to insult when you're corrected. It's a sign of immaturity and mental weakness.

  • @preemptivestrike20 Nor is it any of my concern either but, your moniker indicates you feel it is your duty to act as the "you're not the boss of me" police of you tube. What ever. Lamashter and I where sharing a privet joke that you apperently do not get. Don't be offended by your misunderstanding of my comment, just let it go.

Now, seeing as I'm all out of troll food for you, I'll bid you good day and ask you to "Please move along" ........

  • 0:29 LOVE!!!

  • dam great

    Peter Bruce Photo

  • 1:37 does this part remind anyone else of when you have to go into reaver's mansion or just me? :p

  • "Summer is over and Winter is starting"? Autumn is a stupid season anyway.

  • I'm an American and I love Stephen Fry.

  • America look upon Stephen Fry and tremble! No one can resist his charm. NO ONE!

  • We should give the Queen this tour

  • Amazing that the BBC let Stevie say nice things about America.

  • I just watched an episode of this and I can not believe how boring it was. An hour of Stephen Fry condescending to people, "hello little man are you a fisher person", that kind of thing. Stick to game shows Sir David Frost you are not.

  • @WillShakespeare2007 you know games shows like QI are only his semi-retirement, and that he made his name in a comedy double-act with Hugh Lawie, AKA Dr Gregory House. He also was a regualr on Blackadder which was just comedy gold. he also played Jeeves from P.G. Wodehouse's novels and has made appearences in Bones and several movies, such as V for Vendetta.

  • @TherealMrChristophel I British ande 40 and so Iknoe eve3rything he has done and have even attended some lectures. I simply was not impressed with this and was refering to his presenting when I said stick to game shows. I just think he came across as rather arogant in this series and it was simply not entertaining. He musy have spent ten miutes at a gun club quoting Dirty Harry.

  • @WillShakespeare2007 you know, i stopped caring

  • I adore Fry, but for some reason I didn't enjoy this series anywhere near as much as Merton in India, or anything Michael Palin has done. Perhaps Fry was unlucky with the American's he happened to meet.. I found few of them particularly warm or interesting.

  • To our European friends, we don't have much to see here. As much as I love our country, our ideals make us great, not our scenery. New York is awsome, Washington D.C. is quite over rated, and other than that..... we don't have much to see. Most young Americans want to go to Europe. You guys have all the history, scenery, and cuisine.

Not to mention your women have a cute English Accent o_0

  • @Oblisk47 oi oi oi oi oi leave our women alone!!

America is a fascinating place. Ignore what mankind has done to America and it is one of the most vast diverse lands in the world. Great forests, large deserts beautiful lakes eerie swamps... I could go on. People wise there are... many.. "interesting" people in the states. But for nature alone there is enough reason to visit the states!

  • @Oblisk47 damn son you must be a boring person, I wouldn't want to hang out with you o_0

  • @Oblisk47 We definitely don't have a monopoly on scenery in Europe (although Scotland, where I'm from, definitely punches far above it's weight in that regard!). Your food is alright too. History: we've got you trumped there but I do like America's (albeit brief) history, particularly your constitution and the ideas behind the place. Sure, we all have a moan about America once in a while, particularly when some hick claims you invented liberty or democracy, but I really quite like the place

  • @foxyfaefife Actually, America has all of the UK's history before the 17th Century. That's what makes us cousins: Brits, Australians, New Zealanders, Americans and the better class of South Africans all sprang from the same set of grandparents, so to speak.

Having said that, there's much to admire in the modern UK. Any country that can produce such varied hits as William Blake, penicillin, the Supermarine Spitfire and Kate Beckinsale is definitely a culture to emulate.

  • @jlewisda And Byron, Keats, Wordsworth, Mary and Percy Shelley, Shakespeare, Marlowe, parts of London, the Lake District, Stonehenge...just to add to the list!

  • @Rachiejane1What, the UK list? It's endless. Way more than YouTube's 500-character limit. We share Shakespeare, Marlowe and Stonehenge (Chaucer, the Venerable Bede). But the Victorians writers, the Georgian architects and the modern engineers (Isaac Watt, Elias Howe, John Crapper) are the UK's alone. Wilberforce, Churchill, Louis Mountbatten. If all I had to draw on was the UK since about 1775, I'd be very proud of my heritage.

  • @jlewisda Not to detract from your point of the English having a rich history, but Elias Howe was American.

  • @Oblisk47 just to ruin all holidays to england for you, you know no one there talks like that....

  • @Oblisk47 Well, we do have some pretty nice geography and a wide array of culture, but that's only if you've the money to travel. (Florida and the Grand Canyon are lovely) but yeah, y'all Europeans have the history and the architecture! idk about British cuisine though. :P Not sayin' ours is better, ha.

  • @RinEdition I'm American lmao.

  • @RinEdition British cuisine dont really exist anymore, our top chefs use a mash up styles from mainland europe...The full english breakfast is amazing though, before 12 o clock every bastard thing on my plate must have been done in a frying pan!!

  • I love Americans, just detest your goverment.

Worse than us brits : /

  • @Unit06JAW

Yeah you not lyin'. We Americans feel the same way.

  • he's so good!!!

  • Stephen Fry is an absolute legend and seems like an lovely person. I will watch anything that he is. I hope he makes a series about Britain cos we have some really beautiful places. Unless I have missed it and he already has...?

  • @Rachiejane1 Pretty sure he hasn't, but you should have a look at Billy Connolly's "World Tour" series, it's pretty good.

  • Stephen Fry for Prime Minister

  • This so intelligent man should join politics imo

  • At the start he is seen driving a Fairway taxi which changes to a TX11.

    Anyone else notice that?

  • he said 50 states. on QI he said there were 46...

  • @smith3451 mainy because the rest are commonwealths i believe

  • I really hope he does another one of these...

  • STEPHEN FRY vs THE WORLD

  • Us Americans like having Britons over, just as long as they come unarmed, fleetless and keep from talking ill of the French.

  • it would've been England's great loss and America's great asset if he was born here instead of there.

    Stephen Fry is aweosme incrnate.

  • God Bless America. I want a GREEN CARD so badly. My girlfriend lives in Hurricane, Utah, I live in Nottingham England :(...its hard

  • you DO NOT want to move to Utah...seriously

  • @dannyboy342 Bring her to you. At least she'll have healthcare.

  • LOL TRU DAT NHS ROCKS

  • @dannyboy342 Don't listen to that pem82faggot Utah is where almost all movies are made here in America!!

  • Hail Americas and UK.

    Stephen is awesome. <3

  • Whenever I see Stephen Fry I just think, "What a darling!" He's absolutely charming.

  • Your words are spot on dear..... I adore him so much really.

  • Agreed, seems a very decent person.

  • 1:05

I was on that train back in the 60's when I was a kid. Got stuck on top of Mt Washington for 3 hours when the brake fell off and jammed the car on the track.

  • This programme makes me want to travel america so much! most diverse country in the world!!

  • haha

  • He rubs deer poo on himself then touches his face with the same hand. Wow. No wonder epidemics happen so fast.

  • @Andreazor Epidemics are caused by viruses, poo contains bacteria. I'd be very much surprised if any kind of pandemic was caused by someone smearing faeces over himself.

  • Are all epidemics spread exclusively through viruses?

  • It really isn't

  • You got to take a lot of america with a grain of salt.

  • I hope he does another TV series soon as this was one of the most riveting series I've watch in years. I'm going to burn the DVD out. So come on Stephen do another tour.

  • He's currently presenting Last Chance To See on BBC2 Sundays. It's great.

  • I didn't know he was back on telly. Thanks I'll check it out as I think he is one of the most entertaining men out there.

  • He is actually doing a thing on endangered and weird animals. Its on this Sunday at 8 I think.

  • @paulwlynch I read somewhere that BBC four are commisioning a series called 'more fry in america' including more in deph detail about his tour of the states :)

  • This is such a great show, it has just started last week on ABC in Australia.

The best show for Sunday night.

  • Great series, enjoyed every minute!!!

Does anybody by any chance know the title of the music?

It sounds like a very familiar campfire song I can't think of.

Would appreciate it very much it if anybody could help.

  • " ..or if you're Stephen, It's bedtime" XD <33

  • This is going to be such a great series. Thanks for posting

  • Where is that tiny train around at 1:09 located ?

  • That is the cog railway in New Hampshire. It goes to the top of Mt Washington.

  • one of the best from bbc and stephen

  • any one no wot songs being played at about 25 sec ??=D thanks

  • Just bought the book and DVD, Stephen does have disclaimer that he can't possibly encompass every nuance of American culture. What a ambitious project - he visits every state - he really does - and the US is massive!

  • I've got the book too. It's some interesting stuff, but a small shame that he couldn't have been a bit more "in-depth". It feels a bit compressed.

  • Weell, it is rather massive undertaking, in of itself to visit all 50 states!! It's a bit of flavour, a surface introduction if you will.

  • loved stephen fry in america, i bought it dvd, you really get an idea from watching it what america is all about, id love to do what he did and vistit each state.

  • OH my goodness, I would like to hear his opinion about my home state of Utah. I'm sure would have some colorful things to say about this mess.

  • from what I remember, he visited the national park, with all of the giant rock/sand monuments, and loved it. :)

  • where can i watch the rest of this?

  • It's on BBCFOUR all the time, if you have that channel. If not i'm sure it will be coming out on DVD.

  • sadly, we dont get that here in canada so i have to keep up with your amazing shows through the power of youtube.

  • I subscribe to BBC Canada and it's never on. Presumably because the channel doesn't think Canadians wold be interested in a British personality traveling to America, which couldn't be further from the truth.

  • It is on DVD, I saw it in HMV.

  • shut up man.

  • The American homo sapien loves butterscotch. In fact, travelers are advised to smear it over the photo page of their passports. If stopped by a corrupt policeman, he will ask to see you're identification, lick the photo page clean, and send you on you're way.

  • WHAAAT XDD

This made me giggle. Though i do like butterscotch....

  • Three Hundred Million People

  • fuck you

  • Comment removed

  • I loved this series so much, it made me want to move to America even more than when before I watched it. The first shots of America, when Stephen goes to New England are beautiful. Then gradually you meet the various characters and see the 50 states (albeit briefly) all the while being led by a charming and honest guide. Everyone was so nice to Stephen and the BBC gave a truly great view of America in a time when America isn't well-liked

  • This has been an amazing series, and I think Stephen Fry truly made it a great show!

  • gnoam9 in response to your comment "What is the fascination you Brits have with the Americans?"none, but its as Fry says "the audience appreciates the show more than the performers'

  • Fierce passion?

I have nothing against America, i hope to go there some day. You seem like an absolute twat though.

  • same here. I want to move to Virginia bu im stuck in the UK for about 5 years.

  • Nah the smarter brits admire the americans for having the most positive and wonderful outlook on life

  • I'm English and I wish I could live in america!

Every time I think of America, I think of children playing in the streets, teenagers making videos in the town (that's the youtube influence!), really sunny and hot, lots of "bungaloes" (one floored houses) and a really positive outlook on life.

I'm definitely going to get the DVD of this!

  • hmmm not so many one floor homes

  • actually, there are probably more one story homes than 2 story. Especially in the south and west.

  • Ive lived in Texas and Cali... 1 story homes are a thing of the 70's

  • yes, it's mainly the North and the mid-atlantic states where you find a lot of 2 story homes. We also don't have basements in the south. I know in Texas it's because of all the rock we're built over, but I don't know the reason for the rest of the south.

  • Its because of the permafrost line. In northern climates, there is a depth below which the ground never thaws. The house's foundation has to be below it otherwise you run into problems. Something like that.

  • @allpeeps4me: I live in the suburbs in southern California, and there are LOADS of one story houses here.

  • Everytime i think of America i think of gun crime, no health care, racism, peoples burning desire for material possession and religion...infact i think these are the very things i hate in life....Canada it is then...

  • So you pretty much stereotype a country of 300 million people, in other words.

From me, the terribly religious, materialistic American, to you, a much more enlightened sort, I say: May you live a long happy life in Canada.

  • Really? What a dreary outlook on life. Racism is more prevalent in Europe, where there tends to be a HUGE opposition of immigration due to a lack of assimilation, than in the United States. Our constitution strictly separates Church from State (1st Amm.), unlike in the UK, where the Church of England is an officially recognized body of gvt., where tithes must be paid. We love material possessions, but please, show me a people who hates all things material. That would be to hate the stuff of life

  • It's quite peculiar how the integration of an official national church into the government has made it more benign and secular, and not the government more religious in Europe.

You may have an official separation of church and state, but there is hardly any western country who's representatives' likelihood to be elected depends so heavily on which god, if any, they think they are somehow in contact with.

And to be honest, you are paying for churches, through tax-exempt statuses.

  • @Aaberg123 orly?? didn't they just recently ban burkas in france?? and minarets in switzerland??

seems religion is still very much involved in european politics.

  • It's much more about tradition than religion when it comes to these debates.

  • I agree with Quag7 and CaoltBarrettUSA over the fact that you know nothing about this country besides what your media tells you to believe about this country...and that you are the prime example of an idiot...

    Warm greetings from sunny California...

  • @drummo86 you must not know much about canada then, cause Canada is basically the same, although they do have universal health care, so if you're poor and sick, it's better to be canadian, if you're rich and sick, it' better to be an american.

actually canada has more guns per capita than the USA, and higher rates of violent crime per capita than the USA. materialism, i'd say canadians are equally as materialistic, as are most western countries.

  • @lostalex77 lol Canada haha, brb ballin in the US of A!!!

  • This is just...oh......oh my God.

    You are so brainwashed.

  • one floor homes were a popular theme in the 50's, 60's, and 70's in result of the massive suburban explotion of those decades...by the 80's, most new homes bult during that time and from then on were two stories...three stories are becoming popular in newer and wealthier neighborhoods, at least in California where I'm from...

  • @hellohello66666 Right.

  • @hellohello66666 God thank you for saying that. I browse literature boards and there's always the occasional British fellow making snarky comments on Americans reading or what have you. Granted Americans can sometime live up to their stereotypes, but we never give up hope for a day when we can put those thoughts to rest. Sorry for the long winded reply, but I'm awfully glad I was born in America. >_< Right and now more Stephen Fry!

  • @RinEdition totally, im immigrating if i can one day

  • @RinEdition

I would love to travel to the U.S.A some day

    With love from New Zealand

I like to promote people not writing everyone in a country off as one, people outside of America have agreed with me and we like the ol' U.S of A

  • @ilovepanslabyrinth Thank you. I am an American and I would like to see New Zealand some day.

  • @hellohello66666

Smarter individuals like my New Zealand self. Never writes people in a country off as one,

I would love to travel to America one day, hopefully love and get to live

I imagine a place where some people are one way and others another, not a country of......oh I'm not gonna start, stereotypes bring so much loathing out of me

  • @ilovepanslabyrinth wow your pretentious analysis is really out of place because its a fair generalisation because being positive is an inherent part of american culture like sarcasm and cynisism is part of british culture

  • @hellohello66666 Sarcasm definitely, but I wouldn't say cynicism is an inherent part of British culture. It has its place certainly, but we're not all miserable bastards over here.

  • @foxyfaefife no definately not, but there is more of a give it a go attitude in the states, anyway im visiting missouri and illinios next week so we'll see!

  • @hellohello66666 actually the smarter brits look to you americans and feel jealous of your sub-par intellect because you dont have to worry and feel bad for the future, ignorance is bliss and you guys seem pretty damn bliss full :) just kiddin man you guys are cool
