The first 52 seconds of this is breathtaking. If you could learn to play just that section with the ease that he plays it, you could play any blues song ever written.
This series of blues is the best! For all you Clapton fans, look up the live TV recording called "Early in the Morning". Eric just shines on that one as well. He plays some of the most amazing guitar solos on that song.
This is school for any guitar player who aspires to play blues. Just awesome. Eric Clapton plays with such assurance its ridiculous and his singing is very underrated IMO. With Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Winter, my favorite blues players. Ah hell, through Alvin Lee in there as well for jazz-blues.
@joemysteryguitar Eric Clapton has few equals in this genre of music. I think his blues playing is one of most disciplined styles. He is the real deal, and I can say that his live performances were right up there with Buddy Guy, BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
@butrokkek I agree. After thinking about the concert I saw this year, Eric did the acoustic version of "Driftin Blues" with just acoustic guitar and a mic, no band and no effects. The crowd was in awe. I just thought about what you said, Buddy, Stevie and B. B. King would not do that, they could not pull it off.
I am 62 years old, and first saw him when I was 19. No one will ever be his equal And this, from someone who saw all the great ones. I am still rockin'. and My husband, and three kids were in the front row at Great Woods in 2008. Unforgettable!

Thanks a lot for you prompt information! I have played tenor sax and accordeon in a quintet and some times I have tried playjazz but - OH GOD! - the beat in the Eric show was insane.
Excuse for the English used here. I'm 75 years old, love swing, and I am from Brazil, Fortaleza city. You must be very happy by living the jazz country.
I have had a small band when I lived in Parnaiba city, Piaui state, northeast atlantic coast in Brazil, playing tenor sax and piano with others 5 friends in the 60"s years, when I was very young. There are times where hendrix- and even SRV are slightly out of phase with the beat and sometimes they mess things up a little, but clapton and BB king are almost always spot on- its amazing!

All that aside, I bet phrasing and playing the right note is about as far from what he's thinking as can be. Some guys are just good enough to use a guitar as a voice. Itt Claptonnál a Lendület és az az Intenzítás-Energizáltság szinte Orgasztikus, ami nem nagyon jellemző Eric-re, ugye?!? Köszi!
@1spati I've been playing for 35 years, and I listened to it over and over, and there is no flaw in the actual playing of the notes, it's perfect. I then asked my wife who's played the piano for 40 years and has an ear like a tuning machine, and she agreed. P.S. not getting crazy on you, just throwing out the facts.
@jdrock14 I agree! I've heard him make what I thought was a miss played note...but I was wrong. The man is a perfectionist. (and fun to watch when he's really into the picking)
I love how he just gets into a t-shirt and goes out to play. Its like he forget that he had to play a concert that day and was reminded at the very last minute.
Do you know what puzzles me? Why a genre names 'The Blues' can bring such happiness! Am i the only one that wants to jump about when i hear something like this? This gives you something that stupid competurized shit in the charts cant! 100 per cent pure talent and joy! :-)
I don't care what anybody says, this tour was Clapton at his best, EVER. Everyone says the Cream /Bluesbreaker years in the mid to late 60's, and they are awesome, but the fire he played with on this tour was mind blowing. All the nay sayers at the start of the 90's who were saying he was washed up and couldn't play guitar anymore had to eat their words.
I have a dvd copy of this film. God knows why it was never released. It is jaw dropping.
Kynatics.....I just saw a video of Ginger Baker's son - outstanding drummer! John Bonham's son, drummer., George Harrison's son, guitar, Sean Lennon (?) there are hundreds of offspring of these geniuses who could ressurect this music but where is the audience and where are the suits who would promote it????????
I love this, Clapton is really animated!, this song has a "swing " to it and I'd love to know who the drummer is (Keltner?) the band and Eric are right there, amazing...
and, where in the world can you get this "Documentary"????
it looks like everyone had baggy pants in the nineties. i like the fact that he doesnt come out all dressed up. he just threw on a shirt and some jeans, picked up his guitar and went to play a concert.
IMO there's an even better version of this song available on the DVD Live in Hyde Park (1997). Please find the link under my user name and click on it.
@majvdl Yes the Hyde Park '97 edits are amazing. I've found i liked many tracks performed live even better then the studio ones, putting his soul into his vocals as he does. True Legend.
such perfect basic blues , but done just perfectly , tight as a drum , impecable !!, you can take all that shredding stuff ,and put it in the back seat , because it definately cant touch this , for feeling and soul, and groove , just great
Rock, rap, and R&B all originated from the blues so if you like any of these styles you can thank the blues artists from past generations. A lot of people don't know that not only Clapton had his roots in blues but Hendrix, Jimi Page and several of the other "guitar gods" as well. Hendrix was probably one of the best blues guitarists of his generation but people remember him more for his rock music. "Red House" may be one of the best blues songs I've ever heard.
"Nothing but the Blues"- the best blues documentary never released!

@juxeboxhero - Sometimes you can't help but jump up. Otherwise you feel too low down.

Let me play this great just once and I'd be ready to die. Clapton may not be God but he plays guitar better!!
stainlesjo 1 year ago

@majvdl Im sorry. But the best version of this song is on Live At The Regal by B.B. King.
genecorrado 1 year ago
@genecorrado . . .along with the great jazz singer Joe Williams doing the honors (like this version a lot, though).
WSenator1 1 year ago
@majvdl Yes the Hyde Park '97 edits are amazing. I've found i liked many tracks performed live even better then the studio ones, putting his soul into his vocals as he does. True Legend.

such perfect basic blues , but done just perfectly , tight as a drum , impecable !!, you can take all that shredding stuff ,and put it in the back seat , because it definately cant touch this , for feeling and soul, and groove , just great

does anybody know the name of the amazing piano player dude? =)
woodsdemon 1 year ago
Rock, rap, and R&B all originated from the blues so if you like any of these styles you can thank the blues artists from past generations. A lot of people don't know that not only Clapton had his roots in blues but Hendrix, Jimi Page and several of the other "guitar gods" as well. Hendrix was probably one of the best blues guitarists of his generation but people remember him more for his rock music. "Red House" may be one of the best blues songs I've ever heard.
