'Thumbs down me' if you like, but this is pure demoware. It doesn't do anything aside from have flashy animations and there's no elegance to it at all...
Do you really need 157 ways to view multiple desktops? They're all the SAME aside from having different animations?
None of this contributes to the user experience at all...
It is free. Just throw away Windows, encourage your friends to do the same, never buy and Microsoft product EVER again, and download Linux for free. There are many people who will help you.
Commercial, for sale versions of Linux offer nice boxed disk sets and full support (for FAR less than windows BTW), but for those who want to download it and google for answers, there'll always be free to download ISOs and even full source code for those whop want it. With Ubuntu and most other distros these days, you simply put the disk in and install it. The first time windows user has to do some research too, no?
Thing is, how useful is some of this stuff? I'm sure you can use all those workspaces and shit, but do you really want to be that busy? That would suck. I'd rather be surfing (on the ocean), or beating the piss out of mac users in a bar.
That sucks. Just goes to show you when something is good, it won't stay that way. Novell is a bunch of twats. I used to work there, I know this. And they will fuck people worse than they already do.
ubuntu will never sell out.. protest if they do.. kill people. easy.. or if they start charging, just run GNU licensed open-source community upgrades for the free versions we're running now. simple
Well depends. To install Linux, you would need to have a Linux partition on your hard disk. If your Vista partition takes up your entire hard disk, then you will have to use an application called Partition Magic to make some room for a Linux partition. You should read up on it a bit more just to be safe. But generally, people with even minimal computer skills can make the switch without any data loss.
Actually just learned, for vista users, it's now safe and easy to make a partition. Press start, right click on computer, click manage, then on left plane click disk management, then click on the largest part of your disk, right lcick and select shrink, then give your linux OS how much disk space you want.
I personally wouldn't use partition magic, quite a few times it has gone wrong for me. I would recommend using a Live CD and using Gparted like the Ubuntu CD has.
Linux devs need to stop doing things just to catch up or look cool. They need to focus no usability and stop playing "me-too." Windows that distort with movement don't help the user understand what is going on - its a stupid, meaningless, cycle-wasting piece of eye candy that may actually cause more confusion and less comprehension to new users.
Linux devs can do whatever they want, and Linux users can use whatever they want - that's the whole point of Linux. If you're so concerned about stuff like this causing "confusion", well I don't think it's even enabled by default in any distro ... This is not really a waste of resources, either. This is all hardware accelerated ... when you're just using your desktop what is your video card doing...? Nothing. Look at Windows on the other hand... that is a waste of resources.
And also, it's a seperate team working on Beryl than the people that work on the kernel. It's an independant project, it's just a window manager. But actual Linux Kernel developers really focus on speed and efficiency.
Stole Exposé - Check. Stole Genie Effect - Check. Stole rotating cube effect - Check. Added any new usability or functionality that makes it easier to use or gives more contextual informatoin - No. Wastes processor cycles on meaningless effects - Check. Still has overcluttered and almost unusable menu bars - Check.
True, they did take the Expose and Genie effect from Mac, but firstly, they did not ask you to pay for it, and secondly, what are you talking about the cube thing? That was original. And Linux is actually very usable if you take one day to learn it. Also, they (Linux system, as well as the eye candy) waste less CPU cycles than Windows or Mac. And lastly, the menu bars in Linux are wholly customizable, much more than on Mac or Windows and can be as cluttered or neat as you want.
Well, actually, those bars appear only in screenshots and screen captures (I know it sounds like I'm making it up, but... C'mon!). It's actually a very stable window manager. Do you use linux?
Fake. You can see he just photoshopped individual frames.

Window$ is doomed. Why pay so much for Windows, with all its viruses, spyware, bloat, bluescreens and so on, when you can have this for nothing?

novell is buying all the linux os's and starting to sell them linux will be worth just as much as windows even more.

Also, because you need to really do a lot of research to install these versions. It's getting easier to find stuff but it's a search still.

I'm using Linux and I installed Beryl. If you tell me what distro you use (if you use Linux) I can give you instruction on how to install it.

I'd like to know, im running windows vista and would like to switch to ubunto. Do i lose all my files when i install it?
lunarlink23 4 years ago
Yes, if you overwrite Vista. But you can install as dualboot instead.
Dualboot makes a startup menu with both Vista and Ubuntu. So if you have enough free space, that should work fine.
