"lurking menacingly..." seriously? Way to dress up black holes as something they aren't. They aren't lurking, they aren't going to kill anyone. Stop portraying them as some "space tsunami" that's going to wipe out the universe! A black hole with x mass, has no different of a gravitational effect than a star with the same mass, it's only more dense, and thus, smaller. This is an extremely lame portrayal of something extraordinarily amazing.
Yeah, but all black holes that exist for any considerable period of time are much more massive than the sun. The less massive a black hole is, the faster it "evaporates" due to the Hawking radiation effect. I agree they overdramatize this though.
@DoctorFrogger Oh yes, no doubt they are bigger than our sun, but if our sun were large enough that it would eventually turn into a black hole, we'd be in no more danger than we originally were (not counting the lack of sunlight, etc).
a normal galaxy (2:00) without a black hole??? now I'm getting really confused... what's in the center of such galaxy? a visible object? what kind of object? I thought all galaxies it's black hole...
@haynakaw999 It doesn't answer my question. Inactive blackholes are still blackholes (they are just not 'feeding' in a given moment) - but they are still blackholes with all their properties.
why were we looking for the proof in distant galaxies first? why did we not not start investigating our own one? is this because we used to assume that super-massive black hole are properties of the active galaxies only?
absolutely despise the music here, shame on bbc for that btw...
Funny how that when doing ordinary tests, if you find that everything is a positive you usually assume the test is flawed - here everything just has black holes.
I wonder if gravity could pull in gravity itself if it became powerful enough, thus saturating the black hole... Would be hella strange.
@oNWSo Damn dude, thats pretty intense... but are SMBHs stationary or do they move across the universe, it may be a dumb question but i'd like to know...
why do they feel the need to dramatise this and dress it up with silly dramatic music? really ruins it. space is exciting enough. do not need all that stupid annoying movie music, asif im watching a conspiracy video.
@RedSkullBeats I like it. Granted, it can be a bit overbearing, but I think it makes it more exciting and really gets across how powerful and incredible the universe is in away that everyone can understand. Space is definitely exciting without it though, obviously. It was done tastefully imo
@RedSkullBeats it's telling it as a narrative. all scientific discoveries have wonderful stories behind them on a human level (i.e. a few eggheads figuring stuff out on behalf of the rest of us thickos) and so horizon is not only showing the drama of space etc but also the drama of the human the discovery as well. it's the bbc they are the best. hope you'll see it in a different light. no conspiracy dramatic type programming here just BBC showing the rest how it's done
@RedSkullBeats Hahaha...they even use the tune from the Predator. Sooo...if u c a the evidence of supermassive black hole nearing your current location..."GET TO DA CHOPPA!" Mighty fing quick! ^_~
@jasondparrish since we are on the outer edge of the galactic disc we might go unhurt and might be able to see them collide and form a new galaxy; that would be spectacular; other grim possibilites include sum being hurled out of the glaxy as a rogue star with the solarsystem into the vast emptiness of space
@jasondparrish i thought they universe is expanding so we won't be colliding from andromeda we would just be farrrrr farrrrrr away from it and besides if human still exists 3 billion years later im sure they made something to travel lightyears away

They think the general public is too stupid to be intrigued by the content so they simplify and dramatize it for our short attention spans.
