  • great job Joel!!

  • this guy comes off as a goofy cowboy but damn he is highly intelligent!

  • I agree this is the right thing to do. BTW, I cant help notice the pig's tail at 4:56.

  • Joel Salatin is spot on!

  • Sorry for the misprint. I meant that he as NOT bought a bog of fertilizer or plowed a field. I do agree with most all of his practices and use many methods on my farm. I just don't like that he hides facts in his manic continuous ramblings. He is a good guy I just don't want people to be blinded by his awe inspiring speeches and miss the little things. He is focused on production like big business he just gets it done with less adverse effects.

  • I agree with a lot of Joel's views however he has stated he has plowed a field or bought a bag of fertilizer in years is totally true. He buys grains from farmers who do produce these crops and do buy fertilizer and plow the land. so when he states that "BIG" farming may look neat but it has greater reaching effects is similar to his productions. Also, he raises the same hybrid Cornish cross that Perdue does. His are ready in 8 weeks just like the big boys. I prefer the way he raises them.

  • This man is a genius. We have all lost our connection to the very thing that we all have in common - the need for good food. It is important for those of us who care to support our local farmers. They are the direct link back to a healthier community, healthier environment, and a healthier future.

  • awesome farmers tan at 3:50!

  • awesome farmers tan!

  • I love your channel. I'm sure you love good foods too!! View, rate, comment my videos. I'm sure you'll love them! You are the best!!

  • I live the line about glass walled slaughter houses. I would love to be able to run my farm the way he does someday.

  • At heart, I get capitalism. Money and profit are better than the noblest technocrats for establishing supply and demand. However, make no mistake, the capitalist system , as pointed out by Pollan and Polyface, just doesn't factor in incredibly important issues like public health and the environment. Thanks to Polyface and Mr. Pollan for bringing this issue to North Americans in a very simple and yet elegant way.

  • Great film! AS SOON as I complete my Masters and purchase my home next year, I'm kissing Walmart and all others like them GOODBYE!

  • @leadingbyxample that's the problem isn't it

  • @DclarkTracks - er, perhaps you want to read the whole thread before you start throwing your virtual weight around.

As to what we're doing: giving up two careers. Self-building a house from earth. Starting a building company to help others, particularly low income earners, to do the same. Heading for self-sufficiency in all but (non-GMO) grain within six years. Learning as fast as we can about holistic mgt, NVC, permaculture/facture...

    You?

  • Hey all again - just heard from a trusted source that Joel does not in fact feed his stock GMOs - what appears in the video I referenced previously is simply a misspeaking. Which is a big relief - we really like Joel's work and have been pretty confused and disappointed, so it's nice to know he meant NON-GMO feed!

It remains to say sorry for my rather clipped tone in previous posts. See above confusion and disappointment - not tyring to excuse it, just by way of explanation.

  • Joel does NOT use GMOs. One only need read his blogs to realize that.

  • deemed "unsanitary cuz it's opened to the air".....what is this world coming to

  • @hisblood27: search youtube for Polyface Farm Pt.1, go to 21:50.

I know what GMO stands for. FWIW the O actually stands for organism.

Genetically modified grain is modified in order to be pest-resistant. To do this, pesticides are incorporated into the grain's genetic structure.

GM grain _is_ a pesticide. Which Joel is feeding his livestock. By doing so he sanctions the corrupt, dangerous and NON-transparent practices of GMO producers, including Monsanto.

    How's that for informed?

  • @helkyrie Go ahead, sit back and spend your time criticizing... Joel is putting his heart, soul and sinew into something he knows is right. What are you doing?

  • Comment removed

  • He feeds his pigs and chickens GMO - a pesiticide. Not very transparent, or with integity. Giving Monsanto his support.

  • @helkyrie GMO is not a pesticide. It stands for genetically modified object. And no he doesn't. And no he doesn't support mosanto. Not very informed are you?

  • 'Faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper...' Cheaper ONLY because, as with most industrial production, industrial agriculture passes many of the real costs onto the world's population: loss of human health, the use of toxic synthetic chemicals to prop up a system that is not sustainable, the resulting pollution, etc. As Joel says, "We've gotten into trouble by treating our soil like dirt and manure like waste." It's the stuff of life.

  • i like this guy

  • Wow, I have to say his philosophy on the treatment of animals extrapolating to treatment of human beings and cultures hits very close. The war in Iraq and the middle east just demonstrates that the United States is being controlled by people who have no respect for nature and lifeforms in general

  • @takadi we are not made to eat meat to begin with. gerson.org

  • @lovingorca

Saying we were "meant" to do something or "made" for something shows that you have poor understanding of evolution.

  • @takadi Evolution? What "kind" of evolution are you talking about? I ask, b/c it seems that people like to use that term for their own made-up ideals (they use it very loosely). I personally do not believe in any kind of evolution. Revelations do not equal evolution. Adjusting to climates or one's surroundings doesn't equal evolution to me, it equals adaptability. So, lets leave the term evolution out of it.

  • @lovingorca

saying we werent meant to eat meat is stupid.

the first human beings were hunter-gatherers. Lets look at that word... HUNTER-gatherers that means we hunted for meat. if we werent made to eat meat then why was that the first thing we did?

  • @lovingorca If you are referring to humans no longer needing meat, you are wrong. Our bodies still need what a meat and plant diet is made to provide. If you or anyone else so chooses to not eat meat, so be it - you will, however, need to supplement for what your plant diet doesn't naturally provide. That, my dear youtuber, is a nutritional and scientific fact.

  • @takadi No they don't, and you'd crap your pants to even come close to understanding how malevolent they are. They are actually part of the reason these chickens are having their throats slit and being bled out while still alive. That is indeed inhumane, but even Salatin doesn't have a choice. He either makes them bleed out slowly, or they will jail him for trying to sell that chicken. Sick, but when you see that they do this to CHILDREN and then DRINK the blood. Subverted Nation (dot net)

  • @911wasjews Wow. That is a far stretch. Do some research on why they are "harvested" in that manner. You are taking the whole thing way out of context. LOL

  • @LilMissOpinionated1 Oh no I'm not. Every word of what I said is 100% fact. Who do you think created the regulations he is being forced to follow? Where do you think this type of slaughter comes from? Animals aren't "harvested" they are slaughtered. You can do it HUMANely or you can do it like the jews do, which is let the animal bleed out slowly in excruciating pain. In jewish ritual murder of children the WHOLE POINT is to cause suffering. You do your homework. Subverted Nation (dot net)

  • @911wuzjews You can either break their necks, chop their heads off, sever their brain in two and then cut their artery or just cut their artery. Then there is electricution and gas. Which method are you saying is the most humane way of doing this? And what do Jews have anything to do with this? I personally think you are off your rocker - whoever you are. Also, chickens do not fall under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. He can kill his chickens any way he wants!

  • @911wuzjews You are obviously prejudice against Jewish people which implies to me that you choose to believe what you want to believe whether it is based on real facts or not, the creative twisting of real facts and/or opinions that you deem worthy for whatever self fulfilling reasons you have, as you have demonstrated here in your comments with this clip. You won't hear what anyone says due to your own prejudisms - you clearly have an agenda. I refuse to waste anymore of my time.

  • @LilMissOpinionated1 No. Knowing that jews are the evil little demons behind all of our problems doesn't mean there is something wrong with me. The facts are not subjective or relative to the person who is stating them, or that person's opinions. The facts are just as I stated them, jews are evil, and their kosher slaughter is the most disgusting thing any human has ever witnessed. It's not my fault jews are evil murderous scum, and your agenda is clear jewess. I know thy works.

  • @takadi its not just very close but SPOT ON

  • @takadi yeah stopping sadaam from achieving nuclear weapons to continue his slaughter of the Kurds in the north and the Sunnis in the south was such a bad decision. Fuck those people. Jesus kid read a fucking book sometime

  • @TheMossad921

I didn't realize Fox News was your idea of a book

  • @takadi

    Whoever said anything about Faux.

All he did was bring the facts to the table.

To bad for you that you don't like facts.

Or are you seriously going to argue that Saddam was a "nice" dictator.

But enough about Iraq, this video is about agriculture.

  • @stap0510

You're the idiot along with tweedle dumb below who is bringing up a ridiculous stupid strawman and putting words in my mouth.

  • @takadi

Don't forget that you went off-topic with your war in Iraq and Fox News as a comment to a video about Joel Salatin and his Polyface farm.

If you want to meet an idiot just look in the mirror.

  • @stap0510

It's called insight dumbass, something which people apparently agree with since I am in the top comments. And seriously, look in the mirror? What kind of third grade toolish comeback is that

  • @takadi

People agreeing with you doesn't mean your're right.

Is that your thing? Going off-topic on video's and polarize stuff?

You still haven't answered my question why you should bring Fox News and the war in Iraq at all in a video about agriculture.

  • @stap0510 He's talking about the analogy the farmer in the video made that if you don't respect animal life, you can easily not respect human life. Takadi simply extrapolated a specific example and the farmer in the video was talking in generalities. It wasn't off topic if you watched the video. The war on Iraq killed thousands of Americans, hundreds of thousands civilians/"insurgents" and left the country in shambles on the brink of war, it was inhuman and strongly supported by FOX "news".

  • @Kariakas

What a sheer nonsense to use extrapolation as a guise for offtopic rants.

If he were to direct his arrows at corporatism that's one thing.

But to even bring up an unrelated war another.

Let's face it: the left just can't get enough of the war in Iraq, you even bring it up in video about ecological farming. That's how convoluted you are.

  • @stap0510 The Iraq war was 100% the product of corporatism, oil, defense and mercenary corporations made record profits term after term. Most Americans are so miss informed they actually think Iraq was involved in 9/11 but of course there's no link at all, Saddams regime was not friendly to fundamentalists. So it was about WMDs, which the international community did not think they had and the US couldn't find. Then it was about democracy but we leave the country on the verge of civil war.

  • @stap0510 The Iraq war is perfectly on topic when your speaking of respecting the sanctity of life and how a culture that doesn't respect animal life can just as easily not respect other cultures. Most news casts in the US don't even mention how much the other side lost in casualties or how many civilians were killed. A huge portion of Americans are conditioned to not care and they don't.

  • @takadi Very good comment, I think that was what the farmer was trying to say.

  • this is a very serious issue but no matter what i can't stop laughing at the chicken at 2:43... i mean yeah i would do the same but his face just looks veru funny. it looks like a wtf face....

  • @aafs44

    lol sooo true

That chicken is thinking " FUCK I AM NEXT!"

  • Wow... I have a new respect for the food, but I'm unsure that I will eat another chicken again.

  • 5:09-5:10 <3

favorite line in the whole movie

  • 100% agreed, sir.
