I went here as a small child once or twice. Also the Nevele. Don't know why they didn't sell it but ran into Ken Grossinger ( a relative) on a bus to Tallahassee during the Bush v. Gore Election. He just wanted to talk politics.
does anyone know WHY grossinger's declined to the point of it's bargain basement sale and closure? it's endlessly fascinating to me. wow. thanks for any help :)
@mozmuse Because the local rail line died. It used to be that you could just take a train up from the city and chill at Grossingers for the weekend. When the railroad died, so did the only easy access to the hotel. It was just a steady decline from that point.
@Saik0Shinigami Actually it was most likely due more to the changing of the times. Airline tickets became much cheaper and more vacation spots became more easily accessible. Couple that with what you said and you have a perfect storm. The Catskills in general were devastated by the change... there were MANY resorts and bungalows and parks which suffered since the 60's and are now left in ruin and abandon.
@monstermash2011 Not many resorts(at least in this area of NY)... Concord and Grossingers were the big places that basically fell face forward onto pointy things, almost every other "resort" still exist in some form or fashion. Some of the bungalows in the area did die, but most either got bought up by the Hasidim Jews in the area as summer living or are still under control from the people(Capelli Inc.) who own both the Concord and Grossingers and they refuse to let go of the land.
@HattieLovesCattie Sorry, no pictures. I'm not especially into toboggans. I was just feeling nostalgic for Grossinger's hotel. I used to toboggan, ice skate, ski, play tennis and swim there when I was a kid. And no, I wasn't rich...I was a local.
@davidls11 You had the life I would have loved as a kid.I was stuck in the hot south where you didn't ski or ice skate. This place is gone now.Its sad.My hubby was born upstate NY but moved to LA as a toddler.

The toboggan ran down a track of solid ice. I used to ride it when I was little and it scared the hell out of me every time.
