"its just something that will nail you if your not careful."
how true....just when you feel comfortable look again at the gauges and six pack....chuck cheated death so many times because of luck yes, but more importantly quick thinking
the quick thinking is skill and work...he studied those manuals frontwards and back...he knew the systems better than the guys who invented the planes.
I remember reading this account. He was able to get the other pilot to follow him without telling him to do it. I guess that's a big part of being a test pilot, quick thinking.
Yeager has a serious dislike for any pilot who flew for NACA and had badmouthed Joe Walker a number of times over they years. Take anything he says about a NACA or NASA pilot (Walker, Crossfield, Armstrong, etc.) with a grain of salt...since it'll always be negative.
Mjanovec: Pilots especially military fighter pilots tend to be controllers; they tend to be somewhat confident, arrogant and independent. Many of them have a tendency to be outspoken and they are trained to be open and critical ( under the right circumstances). Though oversight is necessary, they dont like oversight. There was some resentment of NASA being nonmilitary; so they couldnt qualify for astronauts. Fighter pilots can be highly critical, even of their best friends.
Hypoxia a serious thing. I had a connector go south on me once and drained my O2. I didn't realize it at first, could have been bad. I know one guy who died when the FBO accidently filled his tank with air rather than O2. Funny, the guy said he'd been doing it for awhile. Pretty scarry stuff.
this shows how great Chuck is. that he would think quickly and come up with a super idea like that - to make Joe Walker hear that someone else needs help, so Joe snaps to his senses to 'help' someone else. Chuck simply is the best! I served in USAF 1980-84. Go Air Force!!
That's interesting Chuck says he was impressed with Joe Walker. In his book, "Yeager,An Autobiography", Chuck (without mentioning Walker's name) blames Walker for the famous XB-70 crash in the mid-60s.
I agree with Chuck Yeager's assessment. Joe Walker seems like a superb pilot, however he seemed to make some bad errors of judgment in the XP 70 crash.
Even the best people make mistakes. No one is perfect.
See YouTube: DISCLOSURE PROJECT to learn more about the early space program, and secrets pilots would like to tell about some of the things they've chased up there...in the wild blue yonder!
A UFO/USO are not evidence of intelligent extraterrestrial life. I joke the reason we search for intelligent life in space, is because there isn't any here. People see and document UFO's everyday, I have seen many myself, but that doesn't mean they were ET. Let me know if you get any hard proof and credible documentation. There is a good chance I would know before you if there was.
Notive the last line he said...
