@stuckurface can you possibly take a good quality video of it? i also have a metallic looking rock that I've also found in caves up in North Carolina.
I would like to know what mineral stones I can use in my water filter to remineralize the water.? just to lay on the bottom of the water container to gradually release minerals to raise the mineral quality of the filtered water which has come through activated carbon, silica, and zeolite...
Drinking milk is better nutrition for their bodies than soft, sweet drinks--that is my main point. I also think it is fun for kids to know they ingesting the element calcium with their milk, cheese, ice cream, broccoli, etc.
I also ask kids if they are rock-eaters. Most say no. Then I shake some table salt on their hands "look real close, what do you see?". They see small cubes -- "those tiny cubes are the mineral Halite-- or salt. So "if you put salt on your food, you
He should go into greater depth about characteristics, appearance and variations. Also, were any felds. or plags. mentioned? The mica in the video was muscovite by the way, biotite is a dark brown or black.
I'm assuming this is for some class, but what level?
descriptions of theses minerals are rather poor, even for an intro class. When you're in the field you'll need more than the knowledge of streak color to help id, in fact most of your minerals will be too small and you'll end up relying on its appearance instead.
Sorry if I came across as caustic. I might add one more disclaimer: the sand paper is an alternate to and not a replacement for- the streak test--a novel one I might ad. Some sand papers are garnet/emory hardness 6.5-7.5? some are carborundum Mohs 9. A streak plate can be a piece of scrap white ceramic floor tile. The streak color is a standard element of ID when made on a white unglazed porcelain tile. Understand but sidewalks don't give a pure streak color. Silicates won't streakMoh6+
i have had this video edited -- mica, calcite rhombs, lead sulphate, calcium is in the mineral hydroxyapatite for the mineral of teeth--i tell the teachers to use sandpaper for the streak test or i tell them to send their kids to the sidewalk to streak their minerals on the concrete sidewalk--this works fine for the basic minerals--streak plates cost money-- Thanks to Mstreman53 who suggested i make some changes
@CCGeology can u help me iv dug up what looks like a rock and not metal junk found with met detect its about 4 inch by 3 by 2 weighs 2lb 3 ounze was covered in flaky red rust bashed it off wirebrushed its now bluish grey gun metel colour a magnet attracts to it and it appears very hard and sparked wen wire brushed is there a simple test i can do to help identify it tnx
Sorry if I don't fawn but there are almost too many errors in this video to cover--Mica not Myca, Rhombs are cleavage planes, not crystals, sand paper is not used in streak testing and apatie is the mineral of the teeth... Galena is lead sulfate not lead. The orange calcite has been acid washed that is not a crystal surface. USE this video with caution.
thanks for commenting on my video-- i have made the basic changes-- i still recommend teachers to use sandpaper or a sidewalk--works fine for common minerals and it has no cost and the students can prove to their friends that they have pyrite and not gold by scratching on a convenient sidewalk
@Mstreman53 You said"Galena is lead sulfate not lead. " Well, galena contains lead (just as he said pyrite "is" iron -- it contains it), and galena is lead SULFIDE. Very different from what you said. Lesson: look at videos, but read textbooks.
@Ladarzak Sorry I need to look closer at my own edits. In this case two wrongs still don't make a right and we owe our students accuracy would you not agree? Lead and iron are not properly described as such because the mineral contains them but I get the value in linking them that way. You are to be congratulated on taking on the task anyway! Mineralogy is technical and tough to stay atop of.

The Mica he is showing is called Muscovite.
Streak is the mineral in a finely powdered form..
If Calcium is the reason for this why would quartz give of a while streak??
Many errors, be careful on using this video.

question:How do i find the value or worth of a mineral???
i need to know so that the buyers do not rob me
theflipking 1 year ago
Color change in minerals is due to inclusions of certain elements. Amethyst is the inclusion of iron in quartz, turning it purple
Zachdudeio2 1 year ago
Pretty sure thats muscovite not biotite but whatever

Galena is not lead, it is lead sulphide. Major error here.
