It appears the rear of car hit a tree (green blur) 2 seconds in and can see the roof and rear showing damage. I suspect the gas tank exploded on impact.
engine oil will ignite easier than petrol. ive seen a video of petrol being dripped onto a glowing turbo and it jsut evaportaes, whereas oil ignites becasue its thicker. i think:)
and no it was a large bush which would easily ripp the firbreglass bodywork off the rs200 and ruptured an oil line spraying onto the turbo. :)

the car exploded most likely due to when it hitting the bush, due to the rs200 being mid engined the car too the hit to the middle rupturing the oil pipes and igniting on the hot turbo. therefore catching fire.
just oil doesn't go up like that.. but fuel does, and I'm pretty sure he hit something a bit harder than a bush. This and others are ultimately what led to the demise of group B rally. :(
thats a ford rs 200, diven by german driver, marc surer. his codriver died in the accident. surer was pulled out of the car, so he could survive. the rallye was the german "hessen" rallye in the area of "vogelsberg" the stage is called "schottenring" a very famous stage. it´s still driven today, but not that part where thet accident happened. the rallye is part of german rallye campionchip today. i live close to it, 3o km away...

Looks like 20 or 30 feet before the bushes there was a smaller impact on the rear underside of the car. Perhaps a rock. Obviously that destroyed the fuel tank and instantly vaporized much of the fuel. At the bushes there is another impact which looks to have ripped away part of the rear of the car and the fuel vapor cloud from the preceding impact explodes at the same time. Within that fireball I think the car is flipping. Probably not survivable at all.
This and the death of Henri Toivonen (which is also on youtube), who crashed and burned on Corsica in 1986. There was nothing left of the car.
Group B cars had way more power than most drivers could control, and the fuel tank was mounted directly under the drivers seat. With the introduction of WRC cars that was duly changed...

Looks like 20 or 30 feet before the bushes there was a smaller impact on the rear underside of the car. Perhaps a rock. Obviously that destroyed the fuel tank and instantly vaporized much of the fuel. At the bushes there is another impact which looks to have ripped away part of the rear of the car and the fuel vapor cloud from the preceding impact explodes at the same time. Within that fireball I think the car is flipping. Probably not survivable at all.

This is why they shut down Group B rallying.
This and the death of Henri Toivonen (which is also on youtube), who crashed and burned on Corsica in 1986. There was nothing left of the car.
Group B cars had way more power than most drivers could control, and the fuel tank was mounted directly under the drivers seat. With the introduction of WRC cars that was duly changed...

True, but don't forget about the accident in Portugal (were i live :D) 3 people died and all the teams droped off the rally.
the fuel tanks were near the engine or under the passenger seats. that kind of cars were the supreme engeneering. they are to difficult of driving. today, the cars have tracktion control and stabality control. that was the time of motorsport, now it's easier :S.

the driver is Marc Surer and this crash is from the 1986 ADAC-Rally Hessen in a group b Ford RS200 he was seriously injured yet survived but unfortunately killed his co-driver.
