Fire Garden came out in 1996, 2 years after Dream Theater's Awake album (1994) and right before their Falling into Infinity album (1997). Petrucci's progressive guitar style was pretty hot at the time and a lot of guys were emulating this, including Steve Vai.

@HastOsth the song is from 1996, the performance is taken from various shows (london '00, bucharest '98 i think, and minneapolis '07)

that "old egyptian thingy" is inspired from the song "one night in bangkok" from chess.

@hcirig It's not inspired by it is Bankok. Steve Vai admits this and it is credited to the writer on Fire Garden. Check out the comentery on the Live from the Atroria DVD for the whole story.

What year is this from? Both the berformance and the song, cause im hearing ALOT of dream theaters, this dying soul in this song. Sure its just that old egyptian theme thingy, but still that are som riffs that are the SAME :)

@progginger Ummm...Never said he was or wasn't. Could be. IDK. Melodically maybe, but technically they r worlds apart. Vai plays alot of lagato while Petrucci plays alot of stacato especially his runs. They both play alot of weird note groupings (wierd to me), but John Petrucci plays alot of chromatic. They did both go to Berkley School of music though. They r both great.
