@Njugglesvatn Hello again! I had seen that area after "driving" and it does look very similar, but I don't believe the contours of the hills match perfectly, which is all I have to go on to verify. I'll take a closer look again. I believe these are the coordinates you were thinking about: 59.972346,-1.314883.
@Njugglesvatn It turns out that you were correct! I was looking closer to Bigton near the first group of curves, but if you go aobut 2 km north on B9122 you come to an area which looks perfect, and I believe is the place the photo was taken! The hillsides along the road up to that point had too much of an incline too close to the road. Once again, you have solved a mystery! You're second! Someone else has also sent me more information on about another scene. I'll look at that now. THANKS!
@DaLipper Thank you very much for taking the time to watch the film and send your information to me! I'll take a look at the area that you mentioned and see what I can find, and then I will get back to you. Thank you once again!
Thank you for the help that you given me! I’ve checked out the locations that you mentioned, and as I’ve found in the past Google’s names seem to be in the wrong places sometimes. Do you happen to know how to get coordinates using Google Maps? If not, please let me know and I’ll explain it to you. At any rate, I went to the place that you mentioned and according to Google Maps there are several locations instead of one...
@DaLipper When I type in Skelberry it brings me to these coordinates: 59.928936,-1.297331 This is in the southern end of the Island, but I know that there is a North Roe in the northern part of the Island, so something doesn’t seem correct. If you copy these coordinates and then put them into the Google Maps search bar, it will take you to the spot I’m talking about. Then taking the little golden man and dragging him to that spot will give you a view from street level
@DaLipper Looking towards the lake things do look similar, but there are many discrepancies that lead me to believe this is not the same place.
If I type in Skelberry, North Roe, Shetland, United Kingdom it brings me to these coordinates: 60.585829,-1.331964 “Driving” along the roads I don’t see anything there that seems similar to the film, not even if I drive a bit north to that lake just south of Sand Voe.
@Njugglesvatn Some of the comments you made apparently were marked as spam and deleted. I didn't get to see what you had written. Thank you for your additional comments in this post. I'll look at these this weekend as well! Thank you!
0.00>0.33 is looking east, south east from Spiggie. The building you can see in the horizon is the Baptist Church which is in past Mainland's shop at Dunrossness.
I think 0.49>1.17 could be the north west corner of Gulberwick, just past the Black Gaet junction but it's a guess.
1.50>1.54, My dad says the truck is the North of Scotland Shipping Company and the man who comes up from the right hand side wearing the cap and goes around the truck is Sidney Nicolson.
@Njugglesvatn Thank you VERY much for all of that information that you've given. It makes for quite interesting history. I knew it was Loch Spiggie, but didn't know the building was a church. I'll take a look at the other places that you mentioned this weekend to try and verify them. My father did mention in his diary that homes are "serviced by a truck that made its rounds once a day the length of the island. It would be great if the people are in fact who your father says they are!
@todezwis, Hello, no problem:) yes when my dad said that the man was Sidney Nicolson then I immediately knew it was him too. If you google "Northwards Haulage" and then go onto the Gallery you will find some pictures from the North of Scotland Shipping Company.
One correction to my other post, at 4.19>4.24 it's the west shoreline of Sumburgh Head not the east(got a bit mixed up there!).
My dad actually did the rural delivery service at one time around this era, perhaps 1970ish.
@todezwis 3.40> is filmed from the Old North Road in Lerwick looking south/south east. The building you see at 3.47 in the foreground is Jamieson's Woolbrokers.
I'm 90% sure 4.19>4.24 is the west shoreline of Sumburgh Head looking east and panning northwards. Compare it with 4.09.
This is a corrected post with "west shoreline of Sumburgh Head" included.
Spiggie view from WEST side of loch. Camera pans to show Loch of Brow. Scalloway-yes. Land across harbour is Trondra. Ponies possibly Tingwall Valley but impossible to be sure. Sand Voe-yes. Sheep - structure is a plank to allow crofter access across ditch. Lerwick-yes from NW. Sumburgh-yes-camera pans around to Show Fitful Head. NW from Sumburgh Head.Building centre photo is Sumburgh Hotel. Lerwick view from west coming in the South Road
@jor17mig Thank you so much for your confirmations and new information (Trondra, Tingwall Valley, crofter (I had to look that one up on the internet! :) , and the directions some photos were taken from). Also, for indentying the Sumburgh Hotel. That one would have taken me a while! I've been up and down the island, in and out of coves and every conceivable road I can go to on Google Maps, and I hadn't discovered most places yet.
@jor17mig I'll be traveling (or travelling as you spell it) through the Tingwall Valley again to see if I can find those ponies. I have the stones in the background and the incline to look for. I thought that maybe the colored pony was unique, since I had never scene a multi-colored Shetland pony before. I had hoped someone might remember it. My father's journal left few clues. I do know the pilot that brought them from Norway smelled of alcohol, so my father had a good look at the panel.
@jor17mig After that, he took flying lessons. And that someone who might have been my step-grandfather's relative indicated Henderson's Hotel for them to stay in.
Hmm, I wonder if 4.13-4.17 is the road up out of Bigton as you head north back to the main road at Levenwick?.

I'm fairly certain that the view from 2:03 is from Skelberry in North
roe looking North. I think the house with the black roof is called Clothie. The water in the background is the bay called Burravoe.

@DaLipper When I type in Burravoe I’m taking to an area near Brae, and I can not find any ridge or small body of water as appears in the film.
So, at this point, I’m very lost as to where the area you mentioned is.
