I miss the days of Eurovision voting being so nail-bitingly close and the huge roar from the crowd on the final deciding vote. The last time we saw this was 2003...
I'm Maltese and I'm so proud of the way Malta voted here! And to people from the UK who are complaining, eventually Malta became one of the very few friends UK has in the Eurovision Song Contest (remember the classic 12 points to Scooch in 2007?) Unfortunately the UK did not reciprocate this year, giving us no points in this year's semifinal :(
Remember this as well as a 13 year old. We were at a party where the parents had won tickets to go see it live in millstreet. There was a huge gang of us who were all metallers/grungers getting drunk and not really giving a shit until we watched the results. That last vote was such craic, a huge bunch of young lads in leather jackets etc jumping around the place when ireland won just to stick it it to the english...ah memories.
I can remember watching this 18 years ago - Meine Gute! I always thought it was dodgy that they couldn't contact Malta - I mean come on - it's Malta not Mongolia. They managed to contact Bosnia which was in the middle of a war!! Malta historically had never really voted for the United Kingdom and I think the organising body knew the final result beforehand - which shouldn't have happened in 1993. No jury, at that time should have known others' results and neither should the organising body.
Shame the UK didn't win there but, oh well. In a way I'm glad Malta didn't give any pints to the UK as it shows that Eurovision wasn't that political in the 90's, wish I could say the same nowadays with the Eastern European nations.
if any other country but malta had been the last to vote, the winner would have been known sooner and thus the announcement of the votes would not have been as exciting. terry wogan might have been onto something when he said 'i bet they did this deliberately'
Even though I obviously know what's going to happen, I still love watching this clip and savoring the tension - I just love the roar when Ireland wins. Fionnuala is trying hard not to show partiality but you can see how thrilled she is. And Noel C. Duggan likes like a little leprechaun doing a jig. The interaction between Niamh and the backing singers is so delightful. And Niamh herself looks so gorgeous and sweet, and sings so incredibly. The most exciting finish ever and a deserving victory.
@supercowboy79 I forgot to add, even though Niamh Kavanagh the 'legend' didn't score so well in 2010, at least she didn't finish last on the scoreboard, neither did she end up with the dreaded "nul points" :) :) :)
This song is so much better than the uk entry. Uk entered some pop crap with all the formula of eurovision, Ireland done the same but with sheer class.
Clearly Sonia had the better song that night, maybe I am biased becaise im from the UK but in my opion the Irish sng wasnt as good as ours, the UK should have won this year!
@barney1963 It wasn't a question of anyone being robbed... that's the way the voting went.. and as you probably know, the Eurovision has very strict rules regarding the regulation and distribution of the votes from the various countries involved... no doubt Sonia gave a powerful performance that night, she's a fab singer to give her full credit, but face it, Niamh Kavanagh won fair and square for Ireland that night... there was no foul play involved whatsoever...
@vigerfa "We were robbed" is a saying - it does not infer that the voting was rigged in any way! I was merely stating my opiinion that the UK performance was far stronger over all - particularly Sonia's fabulous vocal - I didn't mean to imply that there was any foul play.....cheers and long may ESC reign!!!!!!!!!!!!
@barney1963 no worries.... and yes Sonia was brilliant that evening, and she did the UK proud... she's always been one of my favourite singers, and if you remember, just before the UK entry, you see Sonia at the Japanese Gardens and Irish National Stud, where she named a new born foal, "Millstreet"! after the venue that year... wasn't that nice?!!
@yyttroll ah yes they still are because they have the most eurovision wins under their belt!!! its gonna be hard for any other country to catch up to that for a long time!!!
@yyttroll no need to be sorry.... Ireland still have more Eurovision wins than any other participant.... and I'm not boasting about it, just merely stating an undeniable fact..
@vigerfa Ireland just needs to stop resting on its laurels and send some good music to Eurovision, not like that fat lady with an outdated song, last time.
@yyttroll I suppose you mean the winner of Eurovision 1993? Well it's not as if it's against the rules of Eurovision to be "fat" as you put it. I agree with you on one point though... maybe it's time Ireland did send some really good music back to Eurovision... and who know's what might happen.... they may start winning again... good point there..
@ESCfanNo1 If you had watched the other videos of this voting, you would know that because of technical difficulties, they had to delay the votes from Malta until the end.
@setheurovision94 some urban legends says that they knew that Malta will break all the tension if they would have voted in their original time slot therefore being saved for last as a "techinical problem"
Vocally she has changed she has now a deeper serene voice that i personally like. She could hit high notes here and still sound like the irish answer to Gloria Estefan to some extent.
Excellent contest..with excellent songs..griiping at the end..I would have loved for the UK to have won but Ireland's song was excellent too..Sonia was very gracious
I can't believe it every time I watch it. The UK lost ESC down to the wire just like this is 1988 too. It all came down to the final 12 points to make or break. Malta how could you???????
The best song won, Sonia handled it beautifully at the end there. What makes me laugh is Niamh being understandably cheesed off with the over the top pawing she gets from the Maltese singers, she has to fight them off & loses an ear-ring
She was clearly overwhelmed! She didn't know where to look, what to do. I'm sure used to work with one of the backing singers. The dark haired girl. If it is her she's a genuinely beautiful person as I recall!
I can't but help thinking how similar the reaction my fellow pupils at 10th grade had when we did know the draw for our exam was to the audience's reaction to the Maltese 12 points. Really, the whole ending to this contest was truly fabulous!
I was only 8 when I saw this and fell in love with Ireland and the Irish.A truly great people and this is reflected time and again in their music.Go raibh maith agat!
In Your Eyes is one of the BEST Eurovision Songs of ALL Time. The UK song was very average that year and I was surprised it did as well as it did. Even Terry Wogan siad so himself on the UK transmission. This goes down as one of the best moments in Eurovision History - a close race down to the wire and the BEST crowd reaction ever seen in Eurovision History
I am NOT the UK !! I hated the song - the UK jury loved it. I am entitled to my opinion. I personally do not think much of this years UK entry althgh I think Jade is superb & deserves a better entry. Opinions can be seperate from nationality althg i know in ESC that is hard to seperate
I myself find the stage design anything but spectacular; it's all over the place and has no clear idea. 1994's was a spectacular stage design if ever I saw one!

I mean just what I said; the audience's reaction, not the song per se (though I do think it was a worthier winner than the UK). Really, such cheering never fails to make me smile. Then they break into a chant of 'olé-olé-olé'!
This was the Best Eurovision Song Contest EVER - And the Irish song I believe is the BEST ever Eurovision winner EVER. Pure timeless class. And the reaction of my fellow Irish men and Women was amazing!!!!!!
Yes, this voting was the most memorable one in the Eurovision-history - esp. the reaction of the audience (also when Malta gave 10 to Luxembourg) I think this voting is fareway the most memorable one in Eurovision voting history.
In 1991 there was also a thriller- the last 12 points could have potentially gone to either Sweden, Israel or France. Sweden was ahead by 7 points over Israel and by 12 points over France. The points were ultimately given to France, only to force a tie which led to a Swedish victory decided by the 12 points tiebreker.
The Maltese singers obviously felt she owes them the victory therefore treated her as if she was theirs...

Yes, this voting was the most memorable one in the Eurovision-history - esp. the reaction of the audience (also when Malta gave 10 to Luxembourg) I think this voting is fareway the most memorable one in Eurovision voting history.

The 1988 voting (the one with celine dion) is even more memorable.
Remember that the contest was held in Ireland, I think that's why the audience reaction was THAT loud .
