Nowadays, Health and Safety would mean that the children would be unable to stop the train, causing a terrible accident.
And even if it didn't, the driver would probably think that they were a bunch of chavs trying to steal from the train (it has happened, only the chavs were on quadbikes).
Notice how the train has no smoke or steam in the final shot over Bobby's shoulder (3:57 in this clip)? Apparently that's because the shot was filmed in reverse with the train being towed backwards in order to avoid the risk of running down the actress.
@cm233lh Also, if you look closely - as the train comes towards Bobbie, as we see it, ELECTRICITY PYLONS can be seen behind the train - the film is set between 1900 and 1905 - electricity pylons weren't even invented until after World War 2.
@arthurvasey I hate to correct you but Pylons were first introduced to Britain in the 1920's, however you are right when you say they have no place in The Railway Children.
@webothlovesoup I knew it was some time after - either way, before I was born, but after then. I thought it was after the war - but history was never my best subject.
i love the escapism of the film. the running down the field of long grass and flowers gives the ultimate feeling of freedom. i have just got back from a long weekend staying at haworth. i travelled on the railway and did the railway children walk. i like watching man about the house on the paramount channel coz sally thomsett is hot.
Well I was reading her Wikipedia entry which says "She is mainly remembered for two roles. The first was in the 1970 film The Railway Children for which she received a BAFTA award nomination for Best Promising Newcomer. She played the part of Phyllis, an 11 year old girl, when she was aged 20." I seem to remember reading it somewhere else too.
ok, you must admit though it is hard to believe. we can look at jenny agutter and believe it that she was older but sally thomsetts face looks very young, certainly younger than 20 year old.
As I said in my original post, it is indeed remarkable and I guess that is why the fact is highlighted. However if you want it verified just check her birth year with the year the movie was made.
Along with the scene where they play the trick with the bucket of water on Ruth, the landslide scene scared me silly when I was younger. I regualarly had to leave the room for both scenes and then come back in when it was over!
I was there a couple of weeks back at the same place. There has been a real landslip just opposite - at the mouth of the tunnel, due to heavy rain October 2007!
i had learned this movie as a lesson in my age of 11 in qatar mes indian school

A delicious film, typically English setting. Glimpses of the Bronte sisters' parsonage home are seen in the complete film, Thanks for posting.
