@blackpoolwurlyman this is the 'dayroom' at Rampton, the audience were strapped in and this 'gig' went on for 9 hours solid." It was a joyless and brutal phaze in my life, yet neccesary," said an exhausted Klaus at the wake afterward.
Thank you Mr Wunderlich for you music, I enyoy this video and the Laura´s song, by Master Klaus! For me, the best organist, are Klaus Wunderlich and the Mexican Organist Juan Torres, their music never will die!!
I was at this 1984 tour with Klaus (sadly no longer with us) - and remember this exactly as if it was yesterday!! Venue was different - but thanks for posting it!
@philproductions2210 that must have been wonderful to watch him play the whole evening solely on the Helios. I wasn't able to attend his concerts till 1986 as my father was definately not a Klaus Wunderlich fan so I didn't ask him. Following my father's death in 1985 I persuaded my mother to take me to see him for the first time in Sheffield city hall where he had both the Helios and Beta organs.
Had to post another comment, Y'know people have a go at him for multi tracking thats a load of balls in my view he did for the organ what les paul did for the guitar and they dont have a go at les paul do they. He came from a time where muscians were not reliant on midi where band arrangments were common place unlike today. I multitrack Why ? because I can BUT I still play live three times a week these days and I will be a year older soon and I have been playing live since thirteen
@Wersiking most musicians have other instruments to accompany them in most situations, yet when it comes to the organ player, its a strange state of affairs when some people expect him/her to do it all by themselves and still get a professional full orchestra sound. The reason? advertising organs in the past put
an idea in folks heads that if you buy our organ it will make you into a pro . That's the effect advertising ,like "Join the army be a hero" but don't show the bodies being sent back.
I remember recording this very item from Pebble Mill at One, during Klaus's 1984 tour. I recorded it for John Mutton, the President of The KWAS. If you look carefully you can see John and his wife sitting in the front row! Notice how Klaus sometimes remembers to smile, as he was always being told he looked too serious on TV!!
Oh the memories this brings back from those wonderful days.
As a retired session musician playing keyboards, i can honestly say that no one, absolutely NO ONE, came close to the technical brilliance of Mr Wunderlich. I know loads of him music was cheesy like unknown failed euro-vision songs, but his playing ability made even these classics.
@david1leigh I know what you mean about the Eurovision tunes, which Klaus managed to spice up a bit.
here are a couple of the originals for you which were not failures but won. Ding a dong by Teach In for Netherlands and L' oiseau et L' enfant. for France you'llfind them here somewhere.

You did a great job posting this. This is one of the best examples that Klaus didn't need the multi tracking to get 'his' sound, and could play just as good in real time.
@Thedaanvo Yes he had his own unique style and sound . There are many myths also about Klaus multi tracking but he only used 8 tracks in his studio , which is what most bands use .with the exception of the sound 2000 Lps because the moog synth was only monophonic .So to get the effect of chords more tracks were needed. I don't understand why keyboard players are branded as cheating when one would not expect a violinist for example,
I know KW payed all the songs we all knew. Many singers, like Elvis for instance, did that, too. Yet, KW's talent consisted in interpreting these songs "his unique way". To be honest, many (or most) of these songs he improved considerably.
It's just his general musicality, which I admire. That of course includes his technique, his choice of sounds, his unique style. Of course I don't like all his pieces, but I found some truly, incredibly great recordings, which only a great master of his caliber is able to produce. I am musically very demanding and for some good reason fell victim to his talent... I am whistling to his music and KW liked it. :)
I can hardly imagine that the judges of great, international competitions, such as the judges of of the mentioned international piano competitions, are going by the the type of criteria you all mentioned...
Hi Organaut, Yes I like Jarre quite a bit. We seem to agree that it all has its place, As i get older I find myself enjoying a far wider range of music then i ever did. Your nice reply has prompted me to research Mr Wunderlich further. Perhaps i will become a convert, or become better educated about him at the least. Regards.
@chinesefake that's great, and I am the same as regards music, I like bits of most music really except rave,
maybe I'm getting old. Klaus was in fairness, brilliant at what he did in his field but had his human imperfections like everybody else and it is wise for us never to idolise anybody at all. He had a flaming temper at the slightest provocation. I mostly listen to his Hammond and early Wersi organ stuff . My favourite Wakeman album is the planets and Vangelis "Pulstar" from the Albedo Lp
Calm Down Klaus Fans! Obviously Klaus had his moments but Rick Wakeman he aint!
As for being the "best" most musicians know that you can't be the best as art is art, no benchmark to play to. In fairness I am commenting on the time and music choice of that time rather then Klausy baby himself. That said, I'd rather here Garner, Wakeman, or Vangelis then Klaus, but he has his place, thats why people like Libarace did well and I guess, Richard Clayderman did well as his natural succesor.
@chinesefake fair comment , as you say we all like different music and art which is what makes it specialVangelis/Wakeman have a great sound although I doubt they could perform live with their instruments by themselves without pre recording some bits where as Klaus did in this video. Wunderlich was one of those unique styles one either loves or hates,as are Wakeman/ Vangelis .Wunderlich Got 13 gold disks in his time for his sales .
We saw jean michell jarre at the o2 arena do you like him ?
@chinesefake I like to believe there's such a thing as "best musician" on a particular instrument. It's, because the talent of a musician can actually be technically and emotionally analyzed and assessed. International piano contests, for instance, are doing just that... I like to think. :)
@klemens3333 My final example is this piece of writing that I have scribbled after a tiring day at work, technically my writing, grammar, syntax and even the basic scan of this note can quite rightly be judged as very poor, as for it’s emotional sincerity, no individual or panel of “experts” has any knowledge of my passions or beliefs to judge me, some will judge this to be worth reading others will consider it rubbish, neither group is correct. Then again!
@klemens3333 because it serves a function that can easily be assessed as it has no emotion and needs none, music and art serve the soul a drum machine is technically perfect, but emotionally more cold then a human.
@chinesefake The musical talent of KW was actually his unique ability to incorporate "soul" into electronic organs. His emotional, musical creativity is just unique. That is why his talent entered into our hearts. Do you know of any better organist, who achieved the same or more musical excellence? If so I must have missed something. Please let me know, because for me KW is still Nr. 1 organist.
@klemens3333 There are of course many classical organists who have a far greater technical ability and who do not play seaside favourites as the backbone of their career, but as we have stated that says nothing for emotional “feel”. I have nothing against KW at all, he is/was very very good if you like that kind of thing, I simply don’t. As for him being the best? We have long ago, established my opinion on “the best”.
@klemens3333 Yes that is fine and good that to you he is number 1, he is indeed number one, to you. To me his playing is passé and clichéd. Most of the songs I have heard him play are of appeal to the masses, which is very good for record sales and popularity contests, but says little about artistic merit. No I cannot think of a more successful organist who has achieved such high status.
@klemens3333 Likewise because I love my wife and she is very special to me, it does not mean that I have concluded that all other women are inferior to her. You must have a favourite pianist or version of a given classic, you judge it to be very good, that itself does not mean it is. Judging an art form says far more about the judge and the writers of the rule book then it does about the art being judged. You can judge the construction of a wall or the precision of a mechanism
@klemens3333 You could, I imagine, compile a list of good and bad things within an emotional performance and tick them off and conclude that a tune was well or poorly done but this would be a construct and the result would be false due to the opinion or bias of the original list. I do not like Opera, It annoys me and I find it pointless and dull, but I believe it to be of great technical and to some, emotional merit. I do not like it as much as say rock music but I do not consider rock better.
@klemens3333 Oh!! "emotionally analysed and assessed" a judgement on an emotional response must be a personal assessment. There is no "TEST" for better or correct emotion. I would agree that in a world of robots you can Judge the technical, and physical ability of the performer, but this ultimately leads to a sequencer being judged to be the finest player above all humans, technically it is. As for assessing the emotional aspect this is relative to each person.
@chinesefake Hmmm probably a Daniel O Donnel Or Justin Bieber Fan....you listened to the Best organist in the world NOT available in China at the time...Your problem deal with it
@chinesefake Mr. Wunderlich did play some very, very cheesy pieces in his time which I, as a long time Wunderlich fan, really hate. (German and Polish polka's make me shudder...)
But, do yourself a favor and listen to some pieces such as his interpretation of "Summertime". It is over here on youtube:
Tja, der Wunderlich hatte schon was drauf. Gott hab' ihn selig.
Heey a Wersi instrument! Look for stunning and unique sounds at the SFK soundpacks. Also made for Wersi OAS instruments. Take a peek at soundsforkeys dot c o m or see our youtube channel
Wow. Fantastic upload. All the songs are from the album On The Sunny Side Of The Street. Pity the fantastic solo improv isn't included in Puttin' On The Ritz. To confirm, that's a late Helios model, with the CX-2. Wunderlich appeared on Pebble Mill At One again, a few years later, playing the Spectra.
Thanks so much for posting this rare footage of Klaus. This is definately a CX2 rythmn unit. The CX1 and CX2 had practically identical control panels, but the electronics were different. I believe the CX1 could be upgraded to a CX2. CX2 sounds better than the CX1.
@mgnetuk I have the CX4 Rhythm, it sounds identical to the rhythm used here. You're right, it sounds much better than CX-1 and it's always fun to play and program with. Especially the 'Hey' and 'Aha'-buttons have caused lots of fun to the people who heard it :-)
@triangman1992 I think there may have been a cd of sunny side of the street also at one time, but teldec made all his recordings obsolete. I think you can get a re-issue of the tracks from sunny side of the street on the recent release cds from Bell records at Mss studios.
He was great back then! That Wersi Helios was updated as it has the Sound Computer, Wersi Harp and possibly the CX 1 or CX 2 digital drums . I would love to own a beautitful organ!
@patsaxon the Rhythm machine was the CX1 I think. Well if you want a Helios they come up for sale fairly cheeply for around £200 , but be careful to try it out first because they were had built and sometimes badly. !
Most people who have the room (and are unmarried )buy more than one and use one of them for spare parts.
Hello organaut, I have no video like this, because when I saw Klaus playing live, I had no camcorder to take a video! So I thank you and everyone who uploads a live-video of Klaus, playing himself live!!!
I have those Videos, too ... simply one of the best live performances i have ever heard, it is NOT easy to play such a great style on a Wersi Helios! Don´t know anyone who can do this as perfect as Klaus.
Mrs Mills,Wendy Carlos,Bobby Crush,Klaus Wunderlich...aah,the list is endless....er...

@PeterSchips

@PeterSchips

@Seamaster73 Thanks, In puttin' on the Ritz , I'd love to know what sound combination he uses when he
plays both hands on the lower manual, Any ideas anyone ?

That cassette must be quite rare I admit.
Best wishes, Jason

He was great back then! That Wersi Helios was updated as it has the Sound Computer, Wersi Harp and possibly the CX 1 or CX 2 digital drums . I would love to own a beautitful organ!
patsaxon 1 year ago
@patsaxon the Rhythm machine was the CX1 I think. Well if you want a Helios they come up for sale fairly cheeply for around £200 , but be careful to try it out first because they were had built and sometimes badly. !
Most people who have the room (and are unmarried )buy more than one and use one of them for spare parts.

Wonderful clip, thank you so much for uploading!
Let's all share all the videos we have of Klaus! He deserves it.
He was amazing and not showing off like some other organ players (look how fast I can play).

@Tyrosaurus its my pleasure, fortunately somebody had a free download on google a while back.
Apparently ,this guy had a pile of old video tapes in his loft which had been preserved and one of them had
a recording of Klaus broadcast when he was doing his uk tour while in Birmingham back in 1984.
A real Gem for us all.
I am sure there are many other videos out there, it would be nice to see some more.

Hello organaut, I have no video like this, because when I saw Klaus playing live, I had no camcorder to take a video! So I thank you and everyone who uploads a live-video of Klaus, playing himself live!!!
Best wishes for you, William.
MusicBlinded51 1 year ago
@MusicBlinded51 well the available technology back then would maybe have also been expensive and big and bulky to carry around.
I first went to Sheffield city hall to see Klaus play when he had two organs on stage, the Helios and the Beta,
I was so overwelmed with exitement , I cannot remember exactly what his Helios sounded like on stage,
but I came away from that evening in Awe.

I have those Videos, too ... simply one of the best live performances i have ever heard, it is NOT easy to play such a great style on a Wersi Helios! Don´t know anyone who can do this as perfect as Klaus.
Best wishes
