  • I must say, all the songs in carousel are beautiful

  • Even if the focus of the song is accepting your partner's faults no matter what they are because you're his gal and he's your fella, that's equally wrong and stupid. Accepting some faults because they're outweighed by the good things about your relationship and your lover is healthy, taking whatever someone dumps on you is not. Times have changed, and I'm glad that it now seems reasonable to question being classified among the "things that are his".

  • I like how when Amanda Palmer sings it, there's INSTANTLY a darker undertone to the song.

  • barbara ruick was great also

  • Nan Merriman also recorded this song on RCA Victor #10-1175. I have remembered this tune for nearly 52 years now. First heard it in a shopping mall in 1958. I just turned 58 this month. Shirley jones is still alive you know.

  • amanda palmer`s version rocks 2

  • Have our ideas of what's good & what's bad deteriorated so much that we now think that mediocre talent presented in a modern video is superior to anything of yesterday? We seem to have lost sight of the real essence of this musical play & its meaning in our quest to damn everyone whose actions do not live up to our lofty contemporary mores. [sarcasm] Wake Up! This is one of the best musicals of the 20th century. (For further information see "Carousel" at Wikipedia).

  • Well it *is* a bit creepy, actually. The idea that Carrie is just one of Enoch's possessions...that's the difference between then and now, I suppose.

  • gorgious music and gorgious singing

  • This song is simply an expression of her feelings.

  • exactly. and i think amanda palmer and annie clark sang it ironically , as you can probably tell by their video.lol

  • mhm, i really love how they sang it sarcastically. i think amanda palmer did an amazing job with it

  • As much as it's a nice song, i can't help being a little disturbed by it. It might just be because Amanda Palmer did such a creepy version that I heard first, the words are really very chauvinistic. Staying with someone whether they're false or true is surely not just overlooking their faults.

  • Sorry an....

  • The meaning by comment this video is of course to say somethings about her singing. Shirley Jones is a incredible singer, and wow how adorable she looks in this video.

  • What's the story in this musical behind this song? Is this girl saying "take the punches, because you love him"? That's kinda sick, no that's really sick.

  • you're pretty much missing the point. the main character is trying to convince her friend that no one is all bad, and although people make mistakes, all that matters is love. the focus of the song is NOT take beatings from you're partner because you're in a committed relationship, the focus is that all that matters is love, forgiveness.

  • And the heartwarming climax involves an abusive husband returning from the grave to slap his daughter, and by whispering "I love you" once instantly excuses the repulsively violent way he treated Julie?

  • I don't think they're trying to say it's excusable, I think the point is that No one is all good or all bad, and that you should always take that into account when thinking of someone

  • the climax is that he realizes that what he has done is wrong, when in the past all he did was trudge on angrily and didn't care what anyone thought and that he could do all he wanted because he was the big billy bigelow. at the end, he realizes that what he did was wrong and uncalled for, that he needs to control his temper, and feels remorse for his actions. past abusers can become good. you don't have to wear the title of abuser for life.

  • But he DID hold the title of abuser for life.

He died. He died as he lived; a drunken wife beating ass.

  • well in the afterlife then, he redeemed himself, as stated above.

  • It's pretty hard to misinterpret lines like "sometimes a man can hit you so hard it feels like a kiss."

  • The song, from Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Carousel," isn't about abuse. It is sung after a misunderstanding between lovers, Enoch and Carrie. Women are telling Carrie that all men are bad. Julie (Shirley Jones) responds by encouraging Carrie to learn to live with Enoch's faults, since she indeed loves him. ... "Carousel" is a bit of a weird, creepy musical (including suicide and reincarnation) but this isn't actually a creepy part; just brilliantly turned so recently by Amanda Palmer.

  • @ariadne42 You really should familiarize yourself with the story of 'Carousel' before making ridiculous comments like that.

  • THIS SONG BLOWS MINDS

(Perhaps they don't make them like this anymore, but not many could make them like this back then anyways.)

  • You're right there ,mate

  • Wonderful to find this song on here. I agree things aren't made in the same way anymore. While the song can be "twisted" to mean "stay in an abusive relationship", I think what the actual song is saying is that love is precious, it doesn't grow on trees, and no matter where it comes from you should always focus more on the love, and worry less about everything that'll distract you from finding love and not enjoying the real gift that love is.

  • Also I'd like to add: Love the person you're with, accept them with their faults (because you have them too is implied), don't go looking for faults, because that's all you'll find if you focus on it, just focus on love, because (as I said earlier) it doesn't grow on trees.

  • @Salamon2 : beautiful!!! I know a man like Billy Bigelow, and I couldn't have described my own feelings better than you just did. :-)

  • Too bad this promotes suffering through an abuseive relationship... Sure he hits you- but at least he loves you.

  • You can twist a song anyway you want.. I don't think thats what this song is about.

  • I don't think Marmyg is twisting things. The song says you belong to the man even if he lies to you. I love the song, and I think it's true that plenty of people experience that feeling. But it's about an abusive relationship.

  • Its more about the fact that men make mistakes.. If you love someone you just have to ignore their faults..

  • i agree. a short fuse and violent tendencies are just faults we all have to get over- because we love them and belong to them, you know

  • A beautiful song beautifully sung by Shirley Jones. Great expression - been there done that - heart broken and this really sums it all up. Magnificent! They don't write them like this anymore

  • Fans of this song should check out Amanda Palmer's version featuring Vermilion Lies. Very nicely done.

  • agreed :)

  • i thought it was with Anne of st. vincent

    ??

  • yes it's with Anne but the video they made had Vermillion Lies singing along. but they're making another video, which I think does have Anne.

  • I think it would have been amazing to sing with her when she was young. I was in "Carousel the Concert" with her this past weekend. I was in the chorus and she was Nettie. Her son Patrick Cassidy was Billy. It was a lot of fun and they're both really nice folks.

  • @traceyofrc : Getting to work with both Shirley Jones AND Patrick Cassidy? You're very lucky!!!! :-)

  • They don't make them like this anymore. The days when Quality came with No restrictions on Expense, have been replaced by Inaudible Trash on a budget of the same quality. In my opinion, this is one of the best Musicals ever produced.

  • If only you had included the women's chorus reprising the song after Shirley stops.....!

  • She really is the quintessential Julie Jordan. Just wonderful.

  • I actually think this is her finest film performance. She defined this role.

  • I agree. She made me completely fall in love with the role.

  • Years ago, I saw an interview with her in which she said that she enjoyed playing this role more than Laurey in Oklahoma, that Julie had more depth and was a tougher role to play. I think she's great in both, and what a voice!

  • Beautiful Shirley, sung with so much feeling, you really lived the part.

  • It was not the best voice but so real and believable - she really felt what she was singing.

  • her voice was wonderful. who is better?

  • try jan clayton in the original.

    its close

  • Not the best voice?!?! what are you talking about! lol ..Her voice was pure and beautiful!

    xoxo

  • She's so goooood.

  • She has a beautiful voice but when i did carousel at the notts arts therate in July, our leading lady had a more powerful voice and it was even better than hers!

  • One of the best songs they ever wrote. Love Shirley.

    She is timeless!

  • my favorite song from my favorite musical i love all rogers & hamerstein shows but this is by far my favorite it's timeless

  • My favorite of the r&h shows! I grew up with this movie!

  • Shirley Jones is beautiful, thanks for sharing.
