Nice... my dad bought one of these brand-new in the 1980's. I still have it, but it's seen better days... had been left in the rain a few times and the seals on the tiller-gearbox are leaking. Your friend wasn't far off on the estimate of what you could sell it for. Even now, these - in good condition, can go for 4 - 5 -6 hundred dollars, depending the the area and demand. Cheers! Nice stuff.
@GaryBearful Thanks man! I ended up selling it for about $250 a year ago. It still needed work, but I needed it out of my garage to make room for new projects.. Never enough room!
Do you have any videos on transmission repair?....our tines stopped turning on our old true value rear tine tiller...otherwise the tiller will go in forward and reverse...just not engage the tines...Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!
@mbyr31 Thank you for your reply. Is it possible, that it could be as simple as a belt?
I found a crack on the underside part of the belt and it does seem a little loose.
I really don't know what a shear pin is...LOL...And it looks really complicated to take the transmission casing apart...I heard some grinding sounds at one point prior to the tine failure..does this mean it is a chain driven type? It is a True Value Lawn Chief 5hp. Please send any tiller transmission vids you may run across!
@InHISWord2 It's always possible it's something as easy as a belt. If the belt popped off, that could do it too. Shear pins are pins they put between each tine (sometimes there will be 2, sometimes as many as 4 depending on the width of your tiller) to attach to rotating shaft they slip on.
I do not neccessarily belive you have a problem within the "transmission". Hopefully, it's something more simple than that.
@timothystine LOL!!! I don't expect people to watch all my videos if they just subbed me buddy. I appreciate it, but you don't have to feel as if you have to do this.
As far as you getting your 100 subs, I still have to make it, but a video that will be coming out within the next week or so (with that money you sent) will be getting you past your 100 sub mark! You're a great guy, and I have super great intentions on what to do with that money!
hey matt, remember that lawn boy transmission you took apart for me? the one that you took apart only to put it all back together? lol I got it for nothing and sold it for 250 bucks to a guy that collects lawn boys. I have mixed feelings about the duraforce two cycle engine on a lawn mower.
They chemical makeup of the two are totally different and will have a "reaction" within the engine. It doesn't ruin your engine. It ruins the rings and you will begin to burn oil.
Ok I am the biggest dumbass in the world then. In my 1987 Briggs (before rebuild) I used regular oil. Then I changed it with synthetic oil. That must have caused the broke oil ring then right ??
You can go from conventional to synthetic, but you can never go back. . Don't ask me the specifics, I'm not 100% sure, and don't want to give misleading information. You can however go from conventional to synthetic, just don't go back, thats all.
In small engines, it may be a waste(although I use it). In vehicle engines, it's the best. It doesn't break down like conventional oil. In fact, it doesn't break down at all. In my truck I run AMS OIL. Fully synthetic. If you study up on conventional oil versus synthetic, you will see the difference. Also, if you tear down an engine that has run synthetic all its life versus conventional, you will see the engine is ALOT cleaner!!
I'll be making the video in just a bit. I did get it all torn down, and it appears as if everthing is fine. I don't think a cleaning would hurt, but it doesn't seem as if it affected the engine. I'll have that video up sometime today
Cool man, my dad had his own little shop at the house i grew up in, everyone came to him... love the vids. I'm learning stuff who would have thunk it!! lol Peace!!
This is a 6HP horse. I paid $930 for mine in 1977.Almost 35 years old and it still wprks great.

@InHISWord2 The only video I have about anything to do with transmissions is a snowblower. But it really wasn't a transmission per say.
The first thing I would check is to make sure the shear pins are in place. That is the most likely culprit. Especially if they just suddenly stopped.
As far as any other suggestions, its so hard. They are all very different in so many ways.
