The Kittens/Puppies at the pet store I go to are shelter animals looking for adoption. Why can't all pet stores be this responsible?

Petland Canada is selling all of their current puppies and only dealing with rescues.

This is a horrible dilemma. Leave the puppy mill dogs at the horrible PetLands, or "buy" them to save them from PetLand. If we all stop, some puppies have to take a sacrifice. If we all buy them, Puppy Mills continue! ARGH!

If you don't buy them, they will be killed and have spent all their life in a cage since birth - you are not stopping the breeding or slowing it down - people will always want special breed's.. get over it, your chicken, cow food is milled, pets are a product in today's society, whether you like it or not - Its reality - People buy pets for love and companionship just like they buy clothes & makeup for confidence.

the problem is there are still a million people out there who have no idea where dogs at pet shops come from. We need to get the word out more in some way more than just scattered news reports and the occasional protest, the word needs to get out nationally and frequently.

I feel so sorry and so bad for the beautiful female dogs that are forced to produce all of these puppies for Petland and the Puppy Miller all so that the puppy miller and petland can make large sums of money for themselves, it is pure greed at its worst. Videos like these are so heart-wrenching to see and watch.

buying puppies from puppy mills does not "save" those dogs. it's about supply and demand, it creates demand for more puppies.

Shouldn't these people be lobbying for a federal ban on pet store puppies and puppy mills altogether? It's the only solution to the problem.

Petland is an extremely unethical company. the one in orlando, fl is absolutely deplorable. I cant even go into that place. people need to see this.

@abstractenergy25 There are several Petland stores in Orlando. I believe this video in that they all receive their puppies from the same deplorable sources. The franchisees are probably obligated to sell puppies - supplied by Petland - so it is useless to go after the stores. Need to close down the puppy mills and get Petland management to stop their deplorable practice of whom they do business with. The HSUS is doing a great job, but they should not go after the franchise purchasers.

@friedie1jeff i agree with you to a certain point, but the HSUS wants to put awareness in ppl.. if ppl in that area stop buying puppys from there, this shop will eventually have to close down...

if this happens all over the country, the mngmt wil have to make changes or loose all their franchises...

sadly enough, its next to impossible to just close down puppy mills :(

@friedie1jeff untrue, stores are what need to be targeted. Puppy mills are quiet and disingenius, therefore they leave no paper trail and are harder to close. The only petland in NC closed last month because of a lack of sales and the increase of public awareness. Their illegal practices were exposed and the market dried up. Petland employees and consumers are not informed of these practices and shouldnt be targeted but owners are quite aware and guilty.

yes HSUS is probably one of the wealthiest animal rights organizations. And as long as there are animal victms of neglect or abuse, as long as there are pleas of help, information, prevention, people like me will always help and support orgs like these whether voluntarily or financially.

You know, the worst part is that those puppies that are sold at Petland are usually overpriced. It's terrible how you pay them so much just to torture those poor puppies!

Puppy mills are concentration camps for dogs. Cudos to the HSUS for doing the investigation and to the people who had the guts to demonstrate. All states should have mandatory spay/neuter laws in place. That is the only way to put a stop to this business of greed and suffering.

Alot of these puppy mills are either Amish in the mid-west or regular puppy mills in Texas, Florida, Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas, and Oklahoma, just to name the biggest ones. People in these states need to step up and not except this in their neighborhoods and states and stop being complacent with what is going on there. The human society and animal control can only do so much(I am neither BTW). BUT IT HAS TO BE GRASSROOTS. The people need to speak.

esthef009, next time you get a dog, RESCUE the animal. If you knew just how many good animals were available at shelters waiting for people to bring them home, you wouldn't have bought your dog in the first place.

Excuse me, but what are you saying? Are you implying that the lives of dogs in stores don't deserve to be saved? Those stores can actually afford to take care of those puppies without having to worry about an overcrowding problem. It should be okay to "RESCUE" them by adopting or buying.

There would be no dogs to be "saved" from pet stores if they did not buy from the puppy mills in the first place. Puppy mills only exist because people still buy from them. Stop the demand and the mills will be shut down. There are so many puppies in shelters that could be sold in stores instead. There is a huge difference between BUYING and RESCUING. BUYING dogs only perpetuates the whole problem.

I wish I could have gone to one of those protests but I dont have a petland anywhere near me. All I have is Petsmart and Petco and they dont sell puppies or cats. Only on adoption day and thats when the rescue comes in.

Excuse me, Petco nor Petsmart have never sold puppies, or kittens, or adult cats and dogs. That's because we strive for "Think Adoption First." They have in-store housing for shelter animals which are brought in by local humane groups, thankyou very much.

Yes, get rid of puppy mills! I have a dog that our vet and I suspect was from a backyard breeder, adopted from the humane association. He was born without ears or a tail, he has bad hips, and he shakes almost constantly for unknown reasons. He's a lovable dog with a big heart, but these sorts of places neeeed to be shut down!
