i thought this was a decent movie, but probably not deserving of an academy award for best picture, although it certainly should have been a contender. A well written original screenplay with decent acting and above average direction, fell short to me becasue the back stories to the questions had a difficult time keeping me interested. overall i would have scored it a 7.5 out of 10 until the final scene depicted the two main roles in a synchronized dance routine... it dropped quickly to a 7.0.

This movie is not made to just entertain but to divert attention to a global problem called as poverty. What is shown in the movie is in fact lesser to what really happens on indian streets. Abuse and torture are just a common thing in india. You'd understand this if you learnt to come out of coffee days and baristas and took a walk down the so called filthy lane.
We should never forget where we came from. That's a proverb NRIs beat to death with their kids. But "where" doesn't have to refer to an actual location.
Upper middle class indians (like my family) are such snobs. It's a point of shame for me because I love my culture so much. I think that is what truly limits india: not poverty or westerners, but prosperity. I myself have been an underdog for most of my life, so I can relate to the movie. The main GREAT man behind this film is BIKASH SWARUP-- the writer of the original novel Q & A. Mr Bikas , you are an embsaadar of India somewhere. But I think you have a big heart with sharp eyes. Then screen writer SIMON BEAUFOY-- has done excellent screen play. Everything is so vivid. Finally DANY BOYLE-- the top director has done the marvellous job. Thanks to all these 3 great heroes of this movie.

Neither Hollywood nor Bollywood portrays Cities in their true light - they are made to entertain - even documentaries don't give a true picture of everything they are trying to portray. If I formed my opinion of the United States based on movies I would never set foot there for fear of being shot. If I were a citizen of India I would be more concerned about what people in UK schools are taught -i.e. that daughters are routinely killed at a young age to avoid paying dowries later on.
That is because they are stories and because they are ment to entertain. Who wants to watch a movie about happy people living day to day. Movies want the drama, the violence, the romance...they don't want the 9 to 5.

There is poverty in every country, in some form you will find slums, or even post modern ghettos in even U.S.A. It is not the citizens who are to blame. The director should have factored in government responsibility towards the conditions or even mentioned it slightly. Because this movie is being watched by people in broader audiences, the responsibility of the director is greater to not stereotype. People in the west are going to believe that Indian people of all faiths have cold hearts.

That is quite narrow minded of people. Of course we don't get married under 18. And I thought we could only get engaged under 18. Whatever the case maybe, Slumdog Millionaire was wonderfully taken, though I was quite upset that India (Mumbai) was portrayed like that. That we would do anything to get a few Dollars. I mean, no offence, but we are an emerging nation!

Perhaps, America or the West in general can pontificate AFTER it addresses its own pernicious issues such as crime, homosexuality, divorce, incest, murder, robbery (petty and corporate), corruption etc. America has the highest # of criminals in the world; the most populous prisons, highest murder rate, number of rapes, and rampant pedophelia.
We should make a movie of that and then hopefully I can win an Oscar too! ;)

this is the second movie i've seen in the past year where i wouldn't have changed anything- beautiful filming, great character development, perfect mix of magical realism and the real world these kids were up against. oh and the editing was flawless. kudos!

Slumdog Millionaire is not Indian's movie, it is about India which was made by westerner. You need different recipe to entertained mass viewers. Chicken Tikka Masala's only dish British people may know and it is very popular there; however, it is not consider the most popular dish in India. Why? Just figure out. This movie is not made to just entertain but to divert attention to a global problem called as poverty. What is shown in the movie is in fact lesser to what really happens on indian streets. Abuse and torture are just a common thing in india. You'd understand this if you learnt to come out of coffee days and baristas and took a walk down the so called filthy lane.

Upper middle class indians (like my family) are such snobs. It's a point of shame for me because I love my culture so much. I think that is what truly limits india: not poverty or westerners, but prosperity. I myself have been an underdog for most of my life, so I can relate to the movie. But others don't know how it is to rise above expectation or else have forgotten. It is time we get our heads out of the glitter gutter and pursue our dreams.

The main GREAT man behind this film is BIKASH SWARUP-- the writer of the original novel Q & A. Mr Bikas , you are an embsaadar of India somewhere. But I think you have a big heart with sharp eyes. Then screen writer SIMON BEAUFOY-- has done excellent screen play. Everything is so vivid. Finally DANY BOYLE-- the top director has done the marvellous job. Thanks to all these 3 great heroes of this movie.

Neither Hollywood nor Bollywood portrays Cities in their true light - they are made to entertain - even documentaries don't give a true picture of everything they are trying to portray. If I formed my opinion of the United States based on movies I would never set foot there for fear of being shot. If I were a citizen of India I would be more concerned about what people in UK schools are taught -i.e. that daughters are routinely killed at a young age to avoid paying dowries later on.

What a great movie. This movie came in the right time. As Simone mentioned, money is not everything. Look at the bigger message of this movie than back ground of the movie. Bollywood makes unreal movies as a escapism. We can not blame Mr. Boyle from bringing some of the reality because Bollywood is not going to. Every time when good movies came out, there were received well. It doesn't matter it is about India, China, Afganistan, Brazil, Mexico, or America. If movie is good means, it is good.

I have seen policemen beating up slum kids like as though they are trash.Just pat the slum kids on their back and show appreciation n trust me u'll see a different kid next time. There is poverty in every country, in some form you will find slums, or even post modern ghettos in even U.S.A. It is not the citizens who are to blame. The director should have factored in government responsibility towards the conditions or even mentioned it slightly. Because this movie is being watched by people in broader audiences, the responsibility of the director is greater to not stereotype. People in the west are going to believe that Indian people of all faiths have cold hearts.

Okay, that is an inaccurate representation of Sikh people (who were on the train). It is part of Sikh religion to help and feed the less fortunate. Therefore, the Sikh family on the train would offer food to the children instead of hitting them. I feel this director did a horrible job in understanding the culture and different people of India.

the emotional part of the movie was to me when they showed the kids life, its very heart breaking to see them struggle, this movie showed the reality of the slum i hope people will help out the kids after watching this movie, i was born and raised in canada and do not knw so much of india, this movie helped me knw a bit of indian's life, its not fair to those live in poverty, poor kids
