Actually, Serges doesn't always put the shield up, it's a response to your pressing of the fire button. If you just let loose a charged shot without shooting an extra pellet at him, he will never put the shield up and will take the hit. Doing that makes him the easiest of the three to beat, no sweat. It's only when you spam the pellet gun that the shield will annoy you.

If you time your hits right on serges he wont be able to make a move. I can get quite a few hits, but i also lose my timing and he gets annoying again.

I met and love all the games of the X's series thanks to this guy and his walktroughs. But there is something strange here. You actually can't reach the optional bosses with all the body upgrades. At least one of them will flee and you can fight him out of the castle!!!

I think the main reason would be to shorten up the final boss rush. Instead of three concurrent bosses you have to fight two, at the cost of having to deal with these guys somehow.
