This game sucked for many reasons: Linear straight gameplay, boost replaces the spindash, no alternate routes to explore, boring slow paced werehog gameplay that rips off of legend of zelda twilight princess's wolf form, more of these dumb challenges in an attempt to make the game longer, an annonying new character named chip, and more importantly the ever so predictable final boss fight that turns you into super sonic without having to obtain chaos emeralds through challenges.
To be honest, I enjoyed this right down to the brim. I LOVE this fuckin' game. Werehog and all. This at the time, and even still now, was one of the biggest Sonic games of this generation. And the criticism in my eyes is just no really anything but complaints. Just a bit more polishing and fixing of the controls and this is damn near perfect :)

@C48813 It's just how the story line was that made the game great. IGN failed to see that and went straight to nit picking on the Werehog. The engine was great, the graphics were great, the story line was great, and had very little glitches in the game. If I worked at IGN, I would of gave this game a rating of 9.5/10. Best of 08' in my opinion.
My mind was blown when I saw this for the first time.
I thought that story-wise, Sonic was gonna be this uncontrollable beast who just destroyed everything without remorse, like an actual werewolf. Like there was gonna be this conflict where he would become a werehog but he tried to fight it, because he was hurting innocent people and such. I was so excited.
But then the game came out and he was just Sonic with a gravelier voice and stretchy arms.
This game was really great and one of the best Sonic games out there. Hating it for the werehog was just stupid and pethitic. SEGA was just throwing in something fresh and new, no need to bitch and complain about it. There was never a problem with Tails in a craft in SA2. Really, this game was pretty fun, had a great plot, and I had a blast with it. Sure the werehog levels were slow but they were never boring to me. It's an ADVENTURE! That's what you all wanted, right? Him as a werehog is one.
I don't understand the dislike of the werehog, in SA2 Tails had mediocre shooting levels and Knuckles had awful treasure hunting levels, SA1 had those Big the Cat levels everyone hates and the almost as bad Amy levels but everyone praises those games much more than Unleashed.
When I first saw this trailer I had a Wii only. I was not aware that the Wii and 360 versions of the game were TOTALLY different. So when I played the Wii version I noticed that things from the trailers didn't appear at all (savannah citadel and skyscraper scamper). After I finished the game, I went to watch online playthroughs. That's when I found out that the 360 and wii versions were practically two totally different games. To this day, I completely regret ever buying the Wii version.

I hate these spinoffs for quick cash. Generations yes it was a good game but once again it was another spin off for a quick buck. Extremely short. I think the day time stages on Sonic Unleashed were the most fun I had in a sonic game in years since the dream cast days. Very underrated game.
Sonic Unleashed is totally underrated! The only reason people hated it is because the werehog levels were boring, which is hardly a fair excuse for writing the game off as an unplayable experience. Sonic 06 was supposed to be Sonic Adventure 3, but honestly, I think this game is way more qualified. The story wasn't totally rediculous and the enviroments looked incredible. Also,people complain about the hub worlds being boring. They gave me a better understanding of the region's locals.

I dont have a problem with the werehogs speed, it's just that it's extremely tedius. The combat is just mashing y over and over again. The platforming is okayish.
I thought sonic generations was gonna be the best sonic game ever because they were bringing back the original sonic levels from the first sonic games, but to be true, it wasn't as great as I thought it was gonna be. The game was WAY to short and getting an S rank was pathetically easy. No, I'm not saying it was bad, but (it might be just me) it has bad frame rate issues. Even the Spagonia level in sonic generations wasn't as good as this game.
@shadic57 The thing about it being short; most Sonic games are short.(Most take only a few hours if you know what you are doing) Hell, other great games are like only 3 hours long.(Example; Portal.)
I hate how people always say about the Werehog "He moves too slow" You expect a big, wereholf like creature to be boosting around like regular Sonic? Besides, he has a dash feature. In terms of speed, I think he moved just fine.
The day time levels were immensely fun in this, but I couldn't finish the game because the werewolf levels annoyed me way too much. You run around super fast, then find yourself playing a super slow 'werehog' that rips off God of War. if that wasn't bad enough, it plays jazz while you do it. Not trying to hate jazz, but there's nothing more unfitting when fighting dark creatures.

@ridethewindd44 I found it dull, slow, and it just wasn't fun. I actually played God of War and Sonic Unleashed one after the other, and it really does rip it off. If it was just a beat 'em up element then fine, but this was literally God of War extra map packs with new skins, even his main attacks mimic Kratos almost perfectly.

People ask to much of sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog(2006) was good, Shadow the hedgehog was freaking awesome, Sonic Unleashed was super cool, Sonic Colors was great especially for kids, and Sonic Generations is perfect overall for everyone.

@AnthonyTheAwesome Mind Over Mutant is a lot like Crash of the Titans, but with tweaks. The Titans have more attacks and can jump. They can upgrade now as well. Crash can now dodge and counter attacks by pressing triangle just as they attack. There's more platforming too. If you have the Wii/360 version, you can play co-op with Coco. The levels are a little more inspired, but the game is a bit shorter. However, there's more collectibles to keep you busy after the game is done. It's a good game.

@AnthonyTheAwesome500 I'd recommend the PS2 version over the PSP version. The PSP version has graphics very dumbed down. The PS2 version is more worthwhile, if you can get it. Yeah, Ebay and Amazon have a lot of copies still around. MOM is shorter, but has more replayability, so it evens it out a bit.

@wthugw Sonic still had plenty of speed in the game. Combat isn't wrong for Sonic just because he's "about speed". Speed is a part of Sonic, not the other way around. Sonic can and should do other things.

...but I think that from the beginning, SEGA shouldn't have thought of doing this in the first place. And I think that as a Sonic game, it would have been much much better with only stages like the Day Stages because I find those an absolute blast to play. I bought the game precisely knowing I was going to hate the Night Stages and love the Day ones, so I knew what I was buying, I was ready to make the sacrifice, but I think it wasn't necessary to do this sacrifice.
@MerryBlind Let me put it another way. Imagine you have a game making job. You create a successful IP and want to do more with it. Every time you try out something new, refreshing and unique with your old mascot, everyone hates your creativity for "ruining" their mental image of what your game "should be". Also, how is it a sacrifice to add combat and platforming? If this wasn't Sonic, I doubt you'd have a negative word to say about the Werehog.

@MerryBlind I understand your idea and it sounds nice. But Shadow was a spin-off and many fans hated it. Plus the Werehog stages, like the Day stages, would be a bit monotone-ish, or repetitive or lacking or whatever you want to call it, if it was the sole gameplay. Ah man, the day stages are so fun in this game. Sadly, everything else in this game is either bad or poorly done. At least, now that I have beaten the game (thank God) I can just go back to any stage I want, without having to suffer the night stages.
Has anyone else noticed that graphically, Sonic Unleashed looks better than Sonic Generations? The textures and lighting were life like in this game...not to mention the photo realistic environments in the spagonia stage is true HD quality. Sonic Unleashed is very underrated :(
@itzChangyBaby Well Fine Sir, Generations must take in account the artistic style of different areas. Actually the reason why it looks better than Generations is because generations blurs less, it blurs things more if they are closer, like in real life, but Unleashed just blurs everything equally. Generations also runs at 60 fps, and unleashed runs at 30. I personally love unleashed, colours, and gen, but I hate wherehog, and Gen needs less glitches, and more levels. The day levels are best.
@itzChangyBaby Unleashed is underrated, but the grass textures and extra buildings didn't really match up to Generations in the Rooftop Run department. But for me, Unleashed and Generations are some of the best Sonic games ever.
@itzChangyBaby Unleashed is still for me the ultimate Sonic game, because it was huge to pass! It had a trmendously big story mode, with a lo of hidden missions to find, and so much exploring, and getting all the EXP points and stuff... Although Generations was awesome (and i haven't played Colors but it was great for what people say), Unleashed is still for me the ultimate Sonic game.

@itzChangyBaby It did look better from what I noticed, but it felt like Unleashed lacked colors. Spagonia = Lots of orange, Shamar = lots of yellow, Holoska = lots of white, ect.
Either way, Unleashed was amazing and is totally underrated.

Just some sections, but the games don't revolve solely around speed. When I buy a sequel to a game, I expected different things, not the same game with sugarcoating.

@vgman94 what about Mario? lol. What th9Unkn0wn I think is that, when you buy a platforming game, you don't want half of the game to be something else. You can have a bit of basic fighting in it, just like you can have a bit of platforming in a shooter.

Hell just the way the Day stages play in Unleashed is already enough of a change compared to previous Sonic games.

ALL the signs pointed to this. Any sane person could tell what they were buying. If you do not change the formula "tha much", you might as well not change it at all. Minor changes are small quirks, but not legitimate changes. Painting the White House won't change it's structural strength and weaknesses.

Because they like what's fun, not what they think a game with a certain character's name "should" be. Adding the Werehog is appropriate considering the concept. Adding a dichotomy of gameplay adds a switching system to the gaeplay which refreshes each gameplay style. 'Sonic' shouldn't be synonymous with "running and jumping".
@getoman10 Gameboy was a great system though. It still is actually. But, yeah thats what the Wii has. While, the PS3 and Xbox versions had an overhaul of graphics, and not as many levels as the Wii version.

@R4MBO999 Ya I wondered what is called at first when I saw the trailer way before the game release. Look up the orchestra version that is played during the last boss, it's so good.
@Wilford870 The HD version is about 10X better. It's harder, but the levels are much longer, it has more platforming, higher speed, dazzling graphics and it's a bit more difficult (but the fun kind of difficult). It's fantastic, if you ever get an HD console, get Sonic Unleashed. You'd like it :)
@TomicTheHedgehog The final boss is piss easy though, so many quick time events, I hardly call that challenging. The Wii final boss is waaaaay more epic. Punch Out, Sonic stages, then a Super Sonic fight.
@AshXXMayftw Yeah, the final boss was a big quick time event. The bit before where you controlled Super Sonic in 3D was fun, though. The bit before that, however, is a pain in the ass, because the laggy controls of the Gaia Colosus are much, much worse than they are in the Wii version.
@AshXXMayftw To an extent. The Wii version does have a relatively high and consistent framerate, but the PS3 version has a very high framerate (although it can drop quite a lot). Personally, I love the PS3/360 version over the Wii version, but the Wii version is a fantastic game regardless.
@TomicTheHedgehog Yeah, one thing I wish Sega would just stop doing is putting these very generic demon type monsters in the Sonic series. Chaos I liked but Biolizard, Devil Doom, Iblis, and Dark Gaia I was like meh. Truthfully they need to stick to main characters as final bosses like on Sonic Heroes with Metal Sonic as the final boss and like in Colors with Eggman as the final boss.

@kanetidus EXACTLY! The Day AND Night were both equally amazing and fun. Why couldn't developers see this? Both had an amazing amount of polish. Unleashed needs a sequel with Dark Gaia returning or some other dark entity which makes the Werehog return. The Werehog, just like Sonic's Day gameplay in Generations, can evolve and improve itself. Sonic Unleashed is my all-time favorite Sonic game. SA2 was epic as well, as was Heroes, Shadow to an extent, and Black Knight. But Unleashed is the best.

The Werehog on the Wii and PS2 was more average, but still decent fun. Bad platforming? Listen, if you die alot, just be honest and blame yourself. The game isn't to blame most of the time.
I remember re-seeing this trailer countless times in anticipation of this game. Now i'm doing the same with generations. Sonic games will leave memories with me forever.......

What they need to make is Sonic Adventure 3 with Sonic Unleashed graphics and SA2 gameplay.
I hate these spinoffs for quick cash. Generations yes it was a good game but once again it was another spin off for a quick buck. Extremely short. I think the day time stages on Sonic Unleashed were the most fun I had in a sonic game in years since the dream cast days. Very underrated game.

Sonic Unleashed is totally underrated! The only reason people hated it is because the werehog levels were boring, which is hardly a fair excuse for writing the game off as an unplayable experience. Sonic 06 was supposed to be Sonic Adventure 3, but honestly, I think this game is way more qualified. The story wasn't totally rediculous and the enviroments looked incredible. Also,people complain about the hub worlds being boring. They gave me a better understanding of the region's locals.

I thought sonic generations was gonna be the best sonic game ever because they were bringing back the original sonic levels from the first sonic games, but to be true, it wasn't as great as I thought it was gonna be. The game was WAY to short and getting an S rank was pathetically easy. No, I'm not saying it was bad, but (it might be just me) it has bad frame rate issues. Even the Spagonia level in sonic generations wasn't as good as this game.

The day time levels were immensely fun in this, but I couldn't finish the game because the werewolf levels annoyed me way too much. You run around super fast, then find yourself playing a super slow 'werehog' that rips off God of War. if that wasn't bad enough, it plays jazz while you do it. Not trying to hate jazz, but there's nothing more unfitting when fighting dark creatures.

@ridethewindd44 I found it dull, slow, and it just wasn't fun. I actually played God of War and Sonic Unleashed one after the other, and it really does rip it off. If it was just a beat 'em up element then fine, but this was literally God of War extra map packs with new skins, even his main attacks mimic Kratos almost perfectly.

People ask to much of sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog(2006) was good, Shadow the hedgehog was freaking awesome, Sonic Unleashed was super cool, Sonic Colors was great especially for kids, and Sonic Generations is perfect overall for everyone.

@AnthonyTheAwesome Mind Over Mutant is a lot like Crash of the Titans, but with tweaks. The Titans have more attacks and can jump. They can upgrade now as well. Crash can now dodge and counter attacks by pressing triangle just as they attack. There's more platforming too. If you have the Wii/360 version, you can play co-op with Coco. The levels are a little more inspired, but the game is a bit shorter. However, there's more collectibles to keep you busy after the game is done. It's a good game.

@AnthonyTheAwesome500 I'd recommend the PS2 version over the PSP version. The PSP version has graphics very dumbed down. The PS2 version is more worthwhile, if you can get it. Yeah, Ebay and Amazon have a lot of copies still around. MOM is shorter, but has more replayability, so it evens it out a bit.

...but I think that from the beginning, SEGA shouldn't have thought of doing this in the first place. And I think that as a Sonic game, it would have been much much better with only stages like the Day Stages because I find those an absolute blast to play. I bought the game precisely knowing I was going to hate the Night Stages and love the Day ones, so I knew what I was buying, I was ready to make the sacrifice, but I think it wasn't necessary to do this sacrifice.

@MerryBlind Let me put it another way. Imagine you have a game making job. You create a successful IP and want to do more with it. Every time you try out something new, refreshing and unique with your old mascot, everyone hates your creativity for "ruining" their mental image of what your game "should be". Also, how is it a sacrifice to add combat and platforming? If this wasn't Sonic, I doubt you'd have a negative word to say about the Werehog.

Plus the Werehog stages, like the Day stages, would be a bit monotone-ish, or repetitive or lacking or whatever you want to call it, if it was the sole gameplay. Has anyone else noticed that graphically, Sonic Unleashed looks better than Sonic Generations? The textures and lighting were life like in this game...not to mention the photo realistic environments in the spagonia stage is true HD quality. Sonic Unleashed is very underrated :(

Actually the reason why it looks better than Generations is because generations blurs less, it blurs things more if they are closer, like in real life, but Unleashed just blurs everything equally. Generations also runs at 60 fps, and unleashed runs at 30. I personally love unleashed, colours, and gen, but I hate wherehog, and Gen needs less glitches, and more levels. The day levels are best.

It had a trmendously big story mode, with a lo of hidden missions to find, and so much exploring, and getting all the EXP points and stuff... Although Generations was awesome (and i haven't played Colors but it was great for what people say), Unleashed is still for me the ultimate Sonic game.

Either way, Unleashed was amazing and is totally underrated.

Just some sections, but the games don't revolve solely around speed. When I buy a sequel to a game, I expected different things, not the same game with sugarcoating.

And I agree with you about adding new stuff to sequels, but changing the formula that much is too much.
Hell just the way the Day stages play in Unleashed is already enough of a change compared to previous Sonic games.

ALL the signs pointed to this. Any sane person could tell what they were buying. If you do not change the formula "tha much", you might as well not change it at all. Minor changes are small quirks, but not legitimate changes. Painting the White House won't change it's structural strength and weaknesses.

Because they like what's fun, not what they think a game with a certain character's name "should" be. Adding the Werehog is appropriate considering the concept. Adding a dichotomy of gameplay adds a switching system to the gaeplay which refreshes each gameplay style. 'Sonic' shouldn't be synonymous with "running and jumping".

@Wilford870 The HD version is about 10X better. It's harder, but the levels are much longer, it has more platforming, higher speed, dazzling graphics and it's a bit more difficult (but the fun kind of difficult). It's fantastic, if you ever get an HD console, get Sonic Unleashed. You'd like it :)

@AshXXMayftw Yeah, the final boss was a big quick time event. The bit before where you controlled Super Sonic in 3D was fun, though. The bit before that, however, is a pain in the ass, because the laggy controls of the Gaia Colosus are much, much worse than they are in the Wii version.

@AshXXMayftw To an extent. The Wii version does have a relatively high and consistent framerate, but the PS3 version has a very high framerate (although it can drop quite a lot). Personally, I love the PS3/360 version over the Wii version, but the Wii version is a fantastic game regardless.

Chaos I liked but Biolizard, Devil Doom, Iblis, and Dark Gaia I was like meh. Truthfully they need to stick to main characters as final bosses like on Sonic Heroes with Metal Sonic as the final boss and like in Colors with Eggman as the final boss.

@kanetidus EXACTLY! The Day AND Night were both equally amazing and fun. Why couldn't developers see this? Both had an amazing amount of polish. Unleashed needs a sequel with Dark Gaia returning or some other dark entity which makes the Werehog return. The Werehog, just like Sonic's Day gameplay in Generations, can evolve and improve itself. Sonic Unleashed is my all-time favorite Sonic game. SA2 was epic as well, as was Heroes, Shadow to an extent, and Black Knight. But Unleashed is the best.

@kanetidus Only 4 Euros? O_O What are you waiting for? Get it quickly before someone else steals it. I got Black Knight a few days ago because I didn't want someone to take that game (which, interestingly, were still new. I heard SEGA removed the "bad" Sonic games from shelves, but I found a "bad" Sonic game still in a store. Good for me. At least I appreciate good titles), so I Suggest you do the same to be safe. I'm not so into Generations because it's too simple. But the game looks decent.

@vgman94 Fine, but if you really want that, DON'T MAKE IT A SONIC GAME. It just doesn't fit AT ALL. We want a Sonic game, not half Sonic and half average fighter. It wasn't fun, but it could be if it wasn't just button mashing with bad platforming and other unfair stuff.

@TheWhitenite0 Bullshit. Sonic is more than just speed. The idea before I played the game seemed weird, but when I played it, I realized they made it to fit Sonic. Average? 30 combos isn't average. The Werehog on the Wii and PS2 was more average, but still decent fun. Bad platforming? Listen, if you die alot, just be honest and blame yourself. The game isn't to blame most of the time.

I remember re-seeing this trailer countless times in anticipation of this game. Now i'm doing the same with generations. Sonic games will leave memories with me forever.......
