This tune is a hymn which was used by the Coen Brothers to display the christian attitude of Mattie. Perfect for this beautiful film. Great orchestration as usual by Carter Burwell. His best since Millers Crossing
The whole movie I was thinking I knew this song, and it struck a chord with me, but I didn't know why until the end credits. I heard this song all the time growing up in the baptist church, and with this connection in mind, had always considered it a religious song in the context of the movie, however, I thought it proved to be more of a song about faith which we sometimes have to place on one another trusting in their inherent goodness.Beautiful either way.
Im going to America june the 7th this year for the first time. Im going to spend one month sightseeing California(Yosemite, sierra), Nevada(sierra) and hopefully Arizona(great canyon, monument valley) and Utah (Zion national park). A dream com true! You Americans are lucky! You have such a beautiful country, I wish it wasn't that hard to go live in the states but its ok, I have two beautiful countries of my own, Iceland and France! God bless America! :)
@johann2779 This is from someone who has been there. These pictures do not do it justice. You will be awestruck. While you are in Utah, try to make it to Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Arches and Capitol Reef National Parks. They will be memories that will stay with you forever. Have a great trip!!
This is a beautiful soundtrack and so fitting to this movie. The awesome beauty portrayed in this sound setting shows the trueness of this place we revere as the old west, but more than that, it can be a testament of those with true grit who came before us to tame yet leave unchanged the very spirit of our western experience.
How could I get ahold of this track to download? I have found the shorter version that features just the singing, but I would love to get a version with the instrumental bit at the start. How did you come by this?
I used to sing this with my Mother the Okie from Muskogee (Durant Oklahoma). She taught American Indians in the 1920's Oklahoma when the only good Indian was a dead Indian still and stood up to them with her 44' and two dogs. Some of these women today that brag about a strong backbone and principles couldn't stay in the same room with Mom. The fool has said in his heart there is no God.
Iris Dement was a perfect person to sing this song, for this movie. If you wanted Andy Griffith's choir, @0tt0Skorzeny, you should have told them to do it for John Wayne's version of the movie. The new make is too real to not have someone with as real a voice as Iris.
Iris Dement was a perfect person to sing this song, for this movie. If you wanted Andy Griffith's choir, @0tt0Skorzeny, you should have told them to do it for John Wayne's version of the movie. The new make is too real to not have someone with as real a voice as Iris.
This song brings back so many memories. The strings along with these beautiful pics will bring tears to your eyes. But when that woman starts singing I have to turn it off. Who told her that sounded good?
This hymn was perfect for the movie. I agree with the comments about Iris Dement's version being used at the end. It shook me out of peaceful contemplation. I do enjoy and appreciate Iris's style and voice (and I love her version of this song) but I think the movie would have been better served by a different version of the song - perhaps more like the church choir on the Andy Griffith show where I first heard this hymn as a kid.
Great movie!..A new American classic!! I can picture Iris Dement singing from the front of the Methodist church when I was growing up in Oklahoma way back when...thanks to everyone who had anything to do with making this movie..you all did an outstanding job!! Thanks for the post!!
Everytime I hear this song , I'll always remember Jeff Bridges riding against the black starlit sky trying to save the life of Hailee Steinfeld on horseback as this song played!
Whomever put this together, I want to thank you....My Father just passed away and I am completely heartbroken. I found this online with all the beautiful pictures and it always makes me cry. My father loved this hymn and we played it at his Funeral. He loved True Grit and I sent him the CD for his Birthday. Not knowing it was his last....THANK YOU...God Bless.
Terrific re-adaptation that does not diminish the proper respect and affection for the original. The Coen brothers' version frames the question well: Mattie Ross was seeking True Grit. By the end of the movie, where had she found it? When all was said and done, who--and how many--had true grit?
@libertydefender Mattie did! She had true grit, Labeouf had it, and so did Rooster Cogburn, but Mattie Ross had more than both men put together thanks to her faith in the Lord. An excellent question, thank you for posing it!
Iris Derment sings as though she were from the era. Earthy and unashamed to sing from her soul. She is sure to be unappreciated in an age where style so often overrides substance. Hearing this song is like looking at a dusty and scratched old photograph. Imperfect but perfect in its imperfection.
I guess not everyone understood why they would use this old hymn. It's so perfect for the timeline and how people talked during this time period. Have you ever been to Arkansas, Oklahoma, or Texas? Many of my relatives sing and sound just like this. This is so beautiful.
@denisekazee19 I live in the midst of the Indian Nations, and you're so right. The Christianity here is deep and old and sacred, and the old women at service Sunday morning sing with this kind of weary joy.
While the song itself "Everlasting Arms" was a wonderful choice, the shrill and discordant quality of her voice was a most disappointing ending to a wonderful film. "Iris Dement" (whoever that is) unfortunately, sings through her NOSE. She likely HONKED the Cohen brothers out of a Best Picture Oscar!
@FrlghtWolf You must be a fan of American Idol and enjoy voices made of cheap plastic. Her voice had an honesty and pureness lost in this world of autotuned rubbish.
@BanjoMaloner - Television's endless and increasingly frantic commercials aside, "American Idol" is only one of many reasons I refuse to watch TV. My taste in music leans towards Classical. My daughter plays the Banjo and loves Blue Grass. As for Iris Dement, hers is more like a disturbing HONK than a pleasant country voice. I was not the only one in the audience who was STARTLED by her howling interruption at the end of True Grit. If Yoko Ono herself sang it...it could not have been WORSE!
@cmurphy2826 True Grit was ineligible; the award is for Best ORIGINAL Score, but this is, obviously, based on the hymn "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms".
I was lonely and alone in Hobart, Tasmania two weeks ago, and walked down to the theater on Collins St. for some diversion. Saw True Grit, and it really affected me and made me think of home (the USA). Also our heritage and the people I came from. It also brought me back to thoughts of God and my spiritual roots.
I've watched the film twice. A far, far more realistic and moving treatment than John Wayne's. The ending--and this song--brought me to tears on both occasions, partly for this song and the scene, but also because it reminded me of my frontier grandparents and parents, and it touched my Oklahoma ("The Indian Nations") roots with such deep feeling as no other film has done. I'm 62, and I left there in 1960, never to return. The film awakened a feeling, pulling me "home"...
this song brings back so many childhood memories. It's an old hymn. (Elisha Hoffman, 1887; Tune, Anthony Showalter, 1887.)This arrangement is exactly as it was originally written, which makes it even sweeter. The instrumentation piano with & violin takes you close to your own Soul.
