We Will Rock You and We are the Champions are fucking cool songs...but it's almost criminal that most people will ignore this fucking monster of a bad ass song. Seriously. This song rocks harder than most bands can ever dream of.
I stole this record from my mom when I was a kid - probably because the album cover scared the hell out of me - and for a while this was the only song I would listen to. It's enchanting in a hard & heavy way. But doesn't Brian May's solo start to sound like a squeaky swing set? Yeah - LOVE IT!
It's high school study hall period all over again! I remember listening to this back in '77 when it came out while playing spades or chess in study hall back in the 'burg. Class of '78 rules. ROSEBURG ,OREGON INDIANS RULE! god save the QUEEN!
@cjtal2005 Ummm...really? This song rocks...but We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions is on this album.......I don't think Sheer Heart Attack was "keeping Queen's head above water during the Punk invasion".
We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions were absolutely huge for them. Queen didn't need to compete with punk. They were in a genre all by themselves.
@cjtal2005 Well, I was around then. It may have been different for a while in London, but where I'm from the Sex Pistols were never bigger than Queen.
My comment was about Queen surviving the onslaught of punk with this one song whereas so many other bands went under, put them in a different league because of it.
Don't get me wrong I have been a Queen fan since I first heard them in 1973.
@PolMcCartney Not even 50% About only 25-30% of Queen's works was hard rock and that too in 1970s mostly. Despite being such highly talented and creative hard rockers they chose to go 'soft' later.
1977..this was my childhood right here once again! Who knew in less than 4 years this would be the basis of popular music. Queen WAS trendsetting. Ha! Love this band, always have, always will!!!
Roger was/is an accomplished guitarist in his own right, though obviously a more primitive songwriter than either Freddie or Brian (or John, really, though his output was more prolific). I like his riffing here and the clash of his playing style with Brian's (and the tone! my goodness!) is enjoyable to observe.
In true sense of Punk, this is one hell of a song, even for Queen. Roger probably wrote it as garage in 74 because garage reached England in 72 when the Stooges played there. This song was released in 77, a year after the Ramones played The Roadhouse in London. As for Freddie kicking Sid Vicious out of the room, good for Freddie,Punk, but most of all, Queen.
The first line doesn't rip off the Beatles nor does that stuttering delivery of "in-ar, in-ar, in-ar, inarticulate" rip off the Who from "My Generation." Maybe it's a hat tip, but jeez, let's just acknowledge the prodigious talent and creativity at work here.
We have a retired friend who is a die-hard Beatles fan, just learned last night that Queen is his second-favorite band even though he didn't get into them until after Freddie's death. Now that's a way to gain instant respect...
This is my personal favorite track off of this album. I'm 36 and my dad gave me this on vinyl back when I was 5 years old. Still have it to this day. I used to bug my dad to skip past the other tracks just so I could hear this one. No bullshit.
@dontloseyourhead, I know who wrote songs for Queen, but I thought the second sentence form this quote is suggesting Roger is the lead singer of of this song. Maybe I understood it wrong... but for me his voice is more noticeable here ;)
@elmorocks, I think it's not the easy thing to recognize the voice in the beginning, it could be Freddie, but I'm sure after two or tree text lines I hear Roger. And this is from their official website- "For the very first time, both Roger and John had two contributions each on News Of The World. Roger's raw punk-driven Sheer Heart Attack (written for the album of the same name but not completed in time), which the author sings on the album but not in concert."
@101aneta It's both Freddie and Roger singing, man. That quote is most likely talking about two writing contributions each as opposed to singing, because on previous albums it was mostly Freddie and Brian who wrote the songs. John never sang lead on any Queen album, so they must have been talking about the writing as John wrote 'Who Needs You' and 'Spread Your Wings', Roger wrote 'Sheer Heart Attack' and 'Fight From The Inside'. I'm such a geek.
was lucky enough to see Queen live in '77 '78 and '82 this is one of my favorite songs..just listen to that guitar! the bottom end on those Vox blue dogs are so loose u can almost hear BM having to compensate hitting each double stop a microsecond ahead of the beat..i suspect that was massive Vox funeral pyre going on there...listen to how hard the amps are trying to keep up.
Queen were way too smart for the other rock bands of that era,Freddie had that charisma in his voice he didn't sound like some burnt out stoner rocker.
actually what happened in the recording process was Queen recorded the song Sheer Heart Attack afew years back in the Sheer Heart Attack Album sessions. Well the engineer was distracted and when the album was mastered and finalized he forgot the song. So the track sat in storage at the studio office, then one day Sid Vicious from the rhythm and blues band Sex Pistols came across it while he was looking for a surface to crush up a pill. He had a producer put the vocals to their new song.
@Queenforever15 er......let me clarify.....Roger Taylor would have been great on lead guitar for Queen if they didn't already have Brian May doing it. how's that luv?
@MrManfly - Go listen to his solo albums. My favourite is his first, "Fun In Space", and you can hear the same sort of riffing, like fingers strumming while wearing a glove, rather than May's precise plucking. No, that's not a knock on it, they're just very distinct styles of play.

@diamantinadavina Wow your right, he just roughed up his voice on this track. It took a little bit of listening to Fight from the inside but your right Thanks. Heavy sounding Queen which you never hear anywhere. I've had sattelite radio for several years and even they don't play this song. They should! These guys could jam when they wanted to!
@stivick11 I think the drummer did everything for this song. Freddie did the vocals obviously but Roger played all the instruments except for the guitar "solo" at the end.

@onthemoveagain Hmmmm I didn't actually realize that The Beatles owned the words " Well you're just seven-teen." Or words to the affect. I'll remember to give them their royalties next time I utter that sentence. Just because another artist uses a sentence from another fellow artist doesn't mean they " ripped off" the original.
this(like most roger tunes, has Rogger olayin, all but the lead tracks on it. Very drummer-esque heavy handed playin (i really like it...could be cause I'm a drummer/ g-player too ??!!??) .but the story goes, that I heard..rogher was fed up w/ the punksters in London, runin mouth 'bout Queen...so he out slammed 'em at their own game .w/ sheer heart attack. A++ LOVE the rythm behind the lead(which IS ...T H E definative 'most irritating' guitar lead ever....agree/! Peace ya'll
In my opinion it not sounds like punk it sounds like Heavy Metal because punk is only chopin the guitar like you never played guitar befor and only hit the snare drum as fast as you can and thats not good music comparing to Queen
@AUTHENTICAUTOBODY exactly why my old man loved them and watched them in 1982 at elland Road, I was only 5. I eventually went to see Queen in 2008 in Birmingham. Wish I was old enough to of seen Freddie.
@sundimented you're right, the idea to this song is 1974, but it became a colplete song in 1977, when punk was already there for about one year...so what to decide now??
Homemade amusement park ride: Get a friend stoned and then spin them around in a chair (preferably one without arms) while playing this song loud. Watch as friend falls off the chair when the song ends.
This woudn't have been revolutionary in '74. "Communication Breakdown" changed rock music in '68 - ground zero for modern rock sound and the blueprint for songs like this. Still, a great song and great album. I haven't listed to this in a long time.
tsushima91...I know Roger Taylor played the drums and sang but I like the sound of the guitar in this song. Perhaps I should have rephrased my comment. No biggie though. Is it? If so then oh well boo hoo.
Ahh... The memories. Huge old Headphones covering the entire side of my head listening to the cross channel effects & holding the blood in while I try to liquify my brains!
Checked that stone cold crazy was a possible first "Hard Rock" song, although "Modern Times Rock'N Roll" from Queen was also pretty fast. Sure I had seen it somewhere as being a possible first "thrash" song. The truly unbelievable thing though is bands in the 70s would release an album every year, including world tours. Nowadays upto 3years. Maybe cos more money is made on tours than albums (free downloads).
He's right listen to Link Wray. You people are Fucking Retarded to think that Stone Cold Crazy was the first hard rock song. BLACK SABBATH HAS ALREADY RELEASED PARANOID AT THIS POINT! They are also 5 years late for heavy metal!
The song Stone Cold Crazy was made before Sheer Heart Attack(album), Mercury played it with Wreckage in the late sixties, before the release of Sabbath's Paranoid.
yeah but it was not the first heavy metal song (helter skelter/in-a-gadda-da-vida) and it was DEFINITELY not the first hard rock song (you really got me, my generation)
Bit of musical history. This song written by Roger was done during the punk era and was meant ot be a punk song. When recording the album they were in the sam studios as the Sex Pistols. However SHA is regarded as the beginning of thrash metal?

I had the privilege of seeing Queen back in 1980, back when I was still in high school. There was not much doubt that Mercury was gay.
Who cares.
Listen to Bohemian Rhapsody. God, that is all Freddie, 9 or 10 versions of him singing the song.
With his SOUL.
I miss you , Freddie.
And I choose to think you are in a better place, now.
God gave you the gift, a great gift.

This song was started in 1974, if Taylor had finished it then this song would be bloody revolutionary

Did Queen start punk? 1974?
sundimented 1 year ago
@sundimented I would say so ... they were true innovators !!
AUTHENTICAUTOBODY 1 year ago
@AUTHENTICAUTOBODY exactly why my old man loved them and watched them in 1982 at elland Road, I was only 5. I eventually went to see Queen in 2008 in Birmingham. Wish I was old enough to of seen Freddie.
sundimented 1 year ago
@sundimented you're right, the idea to this song is 1974, but it became a colplete song in 1977, when punk was already there for about one year...so what to decide now??
Sj2492 1 year ago
@Sj2492
hard to decide but queen were so ahead of their time anyway

Homemade amusement park ride: Get a friend stoned and then spin them around in a chair (preferably one without arms) while playing this song loud. Watch as friend falls off the chair when the song ends.

brilliant song - one of my favorites from queen
they could do it all - what a gift this band was
the whole album is a masterpiece

This woudn't have been revolutionary in '74. "Communication Breakdown" changed rock music in '68 - ground zero for modern rock sound and the blueprint for songs like this. Still, a great song and great album. I haven't listed to this in a long time.

tsushima91...I know Roger Taylor played the drums and sang but I like the sound of the guitar in this song. Perhaps I should have rephrased my comment. No biggie though. Is it? If so then oh well boo hoo.

IRomanced 2 years ago
Stone Cold crazy was definitely not the first hard rock song, have u ever listened to bands like Deep Purple
StratApple 2 years ago
He's right listen to Link Wray. You people are Fucking Retarded to think that Stone Cold Crazy was the first hard rock song. BLACK SABBATH HAS ALREADY RELEASED PARANOID AT THIS POINT! They are also 5 years late for heavy metal!
aboxxinc 2 years ago
even more, i guess the first metal was "In-a-gagga-da-vida" by iron butterfly from 1968
StratApple 2 years ago
what about the beatles "i saw he standing there"?
mignonhenne 2 years ago
@StratApple Not "Helter Skelter" from the Beatles?
BillMonarch 8 months ago
The song Stone Cold Crazy was made before Sheer Heart Attack(album), Mercury played it with Wreckage in the late sixties, before the release of Sabbath's Paranoid.
SapmiSatanFromHell 2 years ago
yeah but it was not the first heavy metal song (helter skelter/in-a-gadda-da-vida) and it was DEFINITELY not the first hard rock song (you really got me, my generation)
aboxxinc 2 years ago
yea, but it was a much different version, probably a slower much more blues version

Bit of musical history. This song written by Roger was done during the punk era and was meant ot be a punk song. When recording the album they were in the sam studios as the Sex Pistols. However SHA is regarded as the beginning of thrash metal?
