Larry O'Brian was not too pleased with Dawkins after he shattered two backboards especially in Philadelphia. Billy Cunningham was bitching about the delays involved with the broken backboards
amazing! daryl dawkins looks good last night at that slam dunk competition. looks like he has not aged at all. anyhow, congrats to blake griffin for winning the contest. thank you!
Daryl Dawkins is the reason we now have break away rims. I remember that old Sixer team. I am surprise that rim did not break on dunk #9. He really put some serious torque on that dunk.
D.D. was a Master # (born on the 11th of the month). The #1 is ruled by the Sun. Plus, Mr. D. was born in the 1st month...another one. Giving this chocolate thunderous king triple solar power. Mercy!
He couldn't stay healthy and out of foul trouble. Plus, he never developed his game. He just wanted to dunk on everyone, which was entertaining but he lost out on a lot of points because everyone knew he wouldn't shoot, he would drive to dunk. Dwight Howard is probably the closest version we'll ever see to him. This guy was a monster, just never worked on his game as hard as he worked on names for his dunks. Love DD though.
What are you talking about? Dawkins had 10 to 15ft jump shot from the baseline ad around the circle. He was pre-Shaq with a jump shot. The refs weren't ready for that kind of ball in the late 70's early 80's. Dawk was a casualty of the Moses Malone trade that sent him to Jersey. I feel like the Sixers should have only let Caldwell Jones walk and kept Dawk under the tutuledge of Moses Malone. 76ers could have won two more championships.
@ethurst2 Another good knowledgeable post! The thing is Billy Cunningham got soo frustrated with Dawkins INability to stay ON the court that he had to get his paws on Moses Malone who played an anti-Dawkins kind of game.
Moses was NEVER in foul trouble and just didn't care about glitz and flair, just brought the lunch pail which wasn't Darryl Dawkins style. I just saw in Dawkins last season with Philly averaged almost 5 fouls a game in under 25 minutes a game.
@ethurst2 they may have won more than 2 championships if the refs back then went by the rule book of today... they called so many ticky tack fouls on him he was actually afraid to be agressive. He was the reason the sixers were eliminated early against new jersey in 1984 as he played moses toe to toe in the 5th and deciding game.. always loved his game, and wish he could have retired a sixer..
@jwhiz44 It's a very solid post by you in a lot of ways but "ethurst2" is right too. Dawkins DID have a deadly lil 10 to 15 jump shot. This is why combined with his dunking fetish he shot between 60%+ to 55% every season which stat wise is the best thing he did.
@jwhiz44 Also I would I wouldn't say Dwight Howard, I would say Amare Stoudemire is the closest to Darryl Dawkins power dunking offensive style also BECAUSE of that 10 to 15 ft touch that Amare possesses. HIGH% shots, and nothing but from both players.
@jwhiz44 In a perfect word Darryl Dawkins would be able to out up the Amare Stoudemire career stats of 21+ pts and 9 rebs. But oddly the two have the same foul tendencies and lazy streaks. As much undeserved shit as Amare takes, he makes Dawkins look like Stanley Roberts career wise.

He was very inconsistent, never an allstar and never truly applied himself.....I did enjoy him. Good collegiate coaching would have benefited him in those day.
@judahsong I agree totally. He truly had the tools to be a career 20pts 10 rebs 2 blks guy but between MAJOR foul trouble, injuries, lack of focus, and laziness never achieved those stats remotely which is a big time chame when watch this vid and look at all the talent ooooozing out of him.
@judahsong. How is a college coach going to teach him how to play 82 games a season and bring it every night? He knew the game and smart as hell. But he needed a fitness trainer and go to California for offseason workouts. But back then, you play street ball to get in shape.
He needed time to mature before all the accolades. At that time, a guy like Dean Smith or John Wooden would have helped him discipline himself more. It isn't the talent as much as the fundamentals and accountability.
@judahsong. He knew the fundamentals of the game but back then the NBA was an enforcer game. You really had to be tough and strong. Tommy LaGarde, Mitch Kupchak, Wally Walker, and those forwards from ACC didn't really last long only Bobby Jones did. What Darryl didn't know was the fundamentals of jumping and knowing when to jump. Many times, he jumped out of position and got called for ticky-tack fouls.
@judahsong. Well the guy he dunked on Bill Robizine played all 4 years for Ray Meyer. Ray taught George Mikan, Em Bryant, Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummunings, Dave Corzine, and others. Bill's father played for Ray. But Bill got hurt in 1980 and no offers came from other NBA teams, he got despondent when others thought he had so many options because he was a great academic. But unfortunately for him, basketball was his identity. Darryl was flexible. He could market himself and do things off court.
I dont care what nobody says that says Darryl Dawkins is the original power dunker and when i see these glass-breakers of his it just reminds me of how revoloutionary he was i mean if you dunk on somebody and break the glass too man you know your a dominant force to be wrecking with and thats what Dawkins was "DUNK YOU VERY MUCH".
you stupid fuck. the 76ers lost in the finals against trailblazers in the 70s back in the days when doctor j came to the nba from the aba before they had moses. darryl dawkins got shitted on by maurice lucas. and yeah they lost to the lakers in the very early 80s. i seen both these fucking games on espn classics, so you dont know shit about fucking dipshit.
lol u stupid festering pile of fuckin shit..shut the hell up! They played the Blazers in a world championship ONCE you stupid fuckin douchebag! Your stupid fucking gay ass saying that "too bad they couldn't ever get past Portland in those days" makes it sound like they met every year in a final and Portland won..don't ever fuck with me u stupid cuntbag fuckfaced bitch. now shut up and just admit u were an idiot for saying that.
@VeoShock He had that natural brute strength that you simply don't get by simply lifting weight. There is a clip somewhere where Darryl tosses heavy tyres as if they were freakin frisbees. Man, having that physique for a day.
How do Bball players go from old skool players like Dawkins to players like Adam Morrison and Kuame Brown. Lol
