The problem with DTOTL was everyone was autotuned to roughly the same pitch. That's why it 'worked', though during the chorus you still only heard maybe 4 voices tops. There was little variety between their voices, and one thing I loved about BSB was the fact that there was a variety of pitch amongst the guys. Man I miss the old days. The boys aren't the same anymore.
@belad0nna maybe their voices didn't blend well with New Kids' voices. You can see the difference between BSB's harmony vs NKOTBSB's harmony in All In My Head
