You don't need to look far: graphics apart, previous Colin McRae games are way better. Less arcadey, more realistic and fun and immersive driving mechanics. But if you want a real rally simulation, take a look on Richard Burns Rally.

there's no multiplayer in the 360 demo, but I think there will be in the retail version.

that's not true, it's just that on really large multi maps you only race against the other people's times.

kinda misleading. Its stage racing so not exactly multiplayer as there are no other cars on the track at the same time.

This is how multiplayer is implemented in Colin McRae dirt. You race alone on the track - but everyone does so at same time. See the positions on the top right? and the progress bar over on the left with the little arrows at different places? They are the other players.
