Thank you for creating this excellent series of Blender tutorials. I have been using 3DS MAX since 1997 and decided to find an alternative to reduce the costs or running my freelancing studio in these tough times. Your tutorials have enabled me to very quickly learn the fundamentals - you are a very good instructor. Thank you again and good luck with the project.
I'm brand new to this. I noticed that in your top bar it reads : file, add, render, help. In my top bar it reads : view, select, object. How can I change it so mine will read "file, add, render, help"?
From your tutorials I've finally been able to make a decent map for a game in Blender! But how can I make it so I can make a character and run around on the map I've made? Could you please make a tutorial for that?
@ImSobhi Are you using a mouse or a trackpad? To orbit you should have no reason to touch the keyboard, just push your (middle) mouse wheel in and move your mouse.
no, i meant this stuff is really hard and i was thanking u for the videos. i meant it took me 15 min to learn th stuff in this video alone, not to mention the other ones
@hunter239833 Is that why your in here watching "The Basics" about Blender? Or are you saying you learned a few shortcuts now your a master? Just because you learned the shortcuts mean nothing. You still have to model stuff and figure out the render and game engine. There is a lot to this software, I highly doubt you figured it all out in 15 min. Let alone AutoCAD.
there are many really good tutorials and sites that I've seen but it's confusing since majority of them are past version that's why I'll start over and since now I've learn the basics.
@MrRaindrop16 A lot of pre-2.5 (eg: 2.49b) videos are still up, which is fine, you should be able to tell (and avoid them) by looking at the video thumbnail. Or, you know, just stick to my videos. ;-)
That and you also want to watch the videos where they narrate what they are doing and what keys they are using and what they are doing. Blender is very much keyboard shortcuts. I have came across several, I mean several good tuts to get me going on modeling. Dont jump all over. Do character modeling, get decent, learn textures, get decent and so on. There is a lot of time to learn this and a lot of ppl that are willing to help. Chill a little, it will come.
@GimmeDatCOOKEH Hi, thanks for our question and for watching my video. .. this question is the most common question I've been answering (and it's starting to become a pet peeve, lol). If you're interested in 3D seriously, you should probably invest in a decent mouse - even a $15 one will do, as long as it has a scroll wheel. That being said, to zoom: hold ctrl and alt down, then press your left mouse button down and move your mouse up and down. God help you if you're using a track pad. ;-P
@lotsalote Honestly, if you're interested in learning Blender it's worth it / necessary to invest in at least a basic mouse with a mouse wheel. Using a track pad is impossible. That being said, find in: File Menu > User Preferences > Input > Emulate 3 Button Mouse (checkbox). This will allow you to hold down the ALT key while pressing the left mouse button. this will act the same as the middle mouse.
Thats funny. I so remember a lot of these questions being in the manual. PPL really that lazy to go read? And yet they think they can just jump right in and just use it. This guy went out of his way to show ppl how to use blender and yet you guys come back with dumb ass questions that is covered in the manual. Go read the damn thing before making idiots out of yourselves. This software is not easy to pick up on, you need a little common sense on our part. Nuff said!!
@duane2072 where is the manual? does it come with the download? if i knew there was a manual i wouldn't be watching 50 videos a day and still learning absolutely nothing
@GeekAtHeart1 There is a Blender wiki online, but they're really for reference only, or to learn about the function of a particular button, etc. The best way to learn, in my opinion, is 1)start using Blender a lot 2) watch videos like mine (I have 24 video tutorials up right now aimed at the beginner/moderate Blender user). I hope those videos you learned 'absolutely nothing' from weren't mine!
@cgboorman i have checked the noob to pro wiki but it was crap, i haven't seen any of your videos except this one honestly im really pissed because everyone makes everything too complicated apparently in the technology world "for beginners" really means "for people with 15 years of experience" i'll check out your videos more and see if they help i've been using blender non stop for 20 days and still absolutely no progression. hope your vids can change that thanks for uploading them.
@GeekAtHeart1 Yes good point. I forgot to mention about the different versions as they all operate differently, pay attention to that when looking. How much do you know about 3d? Different views, know the difference between a face, edge and vertex etc.. I am not trying to be an ass but you need a grasp on 3d or you will have a major problem also. I have 8 years of 3d CAD plus schooling so 3d is no issue for me. Just learning an ass backwards software is a challenge though. LOL
@duane2072 yeah i have 3 years of autoCAD under my belt but it was so easy for me i spent half a semester in basic then got forced to advanced but it didnt teach me much because of the software skip it went from old cad to new (like when the explode tool was still a picture of a dynamite) all im really trying to do is learn the interface and memorize the shortcuts i grasp things really quick but Blender is a bitch for me
@GeekAtHeart1 No, join the boat, Blender is a bitch for everyone as there keys make no sense. I think they were drunk when they designed it. LOL I still trip over the UV mapping texturing part. One missed setting and your sitting scratching your head on what happened. That and they take you all over the screen to set your settings. Bottom, Left, Right, Left. Seems like you spend more time dickin around setting up then actual drawing.
@duane2072 lol yeah i know what you mean i'm trying though. i was actually just thinking about Maya because thats made by Autodesk and it might be a little better for me i gotta try the free trial before i drop $3500 on it though
@GeekAtHeart1 //cgcookie.com/blender/ Try these two places as well for more in depth tutorials. They basically hold your hand while going through the videos. I like them, very informative.
@GeekAtHeart1 Click help, click manual. Sorry had to. What is your question? What are you having problems with? Dont ask a basic question like "how do I add a mesh?" I am not a pro, but can figure things out pretty quickly. Im sure there is enough help to get you up and going.
@lim0408 I haven't made a video specifically about the video sequence editor, but I do use and talk about it in my 'Camera Tracking - Pt 1 / 2' video. =)
By far the best blender tutorial I've seen so far, the others I've seen go straight into "Press 1, press Z, press........." which is horribly confusing for a beginner.
i've looked everywhere and no one seems to know the right - correct answer... Why the hell cant i playback animations in 2.6? No-one seems to know the answer and its really bugging the living hell out of me. arg!
@Ssliasil Alt+A is the usual keyboard shortcut for playing back your timeline. If that's not working, try resetting blender to factor settings under the file menu, then try again.. that's all I can really come up with without knowing the details.
You need to make sure people can hear you the next time you make a video. If you don't think audio is important try shutting off the sound the next time you want to learn something that requires listening.
@cgsuperpanda1 I know. Sorry. after my second video I switched to my laptop which has better sound input and I fixed the video issues. Thanks for watching!
@cgboorman If you do a lot of tutorials, conferencing or just Skype I can thoroughly recommend getting a Samson CO1U USB condenser mic - as its a condenser (studio) mic you will need a quiet PC though!
@ajnardo This isn't the answer you're looking for, but I can really only recommend using a mouse. I'd never, never try working in 3D with a touchpad- you really do need to be working with a mouse. And you can probably find one as cheap as about $8-10. That being said, depending on your touchpad, you should be able to scroll by moving your finger vertically (up and down) near the right edge of the touchpad.
It'll get easier in no time, and soon you'll love it. - I'll recommend watching my second video to customize how Blender looks and behaves (especially when you orbit/spin your view). Thanks for watching!
@cgboorman I hate making long reply chains, but I just saved a little project I made, and then I went to re-open it and it's blank. I rendered it before closing, but nothing is there. :/
@ajnardo you might be lost among 'layers'. Look on the header bar in the 3d viewport (at the bottom). It's the same bar as your move/rotate/scale Gizmo selection. In Object mode, look for a grid of small squares on this bar (to the right of the 'Global' pull-down menu). This grid of squares are buttons representing layers of a 3d scene, like layers in photoshop if you're familiar. Squares w/ faint dots in them have items.. you might have just clicked on an empty layer.
@ajnardo using a trackpad for 3D is really horrible. Sorry - not the answer you wanted, but it's the truth. a good wired mouse (or, even a cheap wireless one as long as there isn't much lag) is a necessary investment if you're interested in working in any 3d program.
@HomebeatRecords I think you're talking about the Boolean modifier. It's under the 'wrench' icon in the properties window on the right. 'Select an object, Add Modifier' pull-down > 'Boolean'. The type of boolean (eg: 'difference') is available once you add the boolean modifier. Hope that helps. I'll make a video soon.
