i never understood the centaurs in this game. what is it mutated from, like a human, dog, and squid were standing next to each other in the nuclear war?

They were created in Vault 87 and were presumably related to the Forced Evolutionary Virus (that turns people into Super Mutants).

The ones from fallout 1 and 2 were created when the master (main Antagonist) mixed humans, dogs, and many other animals in the FEV vats.

and plus at the level you were at they were a good main source of health next to Ice cold Nuka-Cola's which you can buy the Pristine Nuka-Cola machine for 700 caps give or take a few. Not to mention its fairly cheap considering how much caps you find in the Wastes.

They do a lot of damage to you if they get close, so I like to try and take them out quick before they can strike. Otherwise, yes, it is a good idea. It rapes the quality of your weapon though...

Actually scorch, how long did it take for you to realize that you could do MASSIVE DAMAGE to mirelurks with mines...

I wasn't attempting to figure it out, I just don't tend to use those particular weapons. I experimented with some ways to eliminate most of the ones that would end up close to the spawn point, and it turns out weakening them with mines was the way to go.
