Thanks mate it is beautiful country and no I was not a local I am a Sydney boy but was living in Port Douglas between 97 and 2000. I really love Cow Bay just North of the Daintree River and if I ever make enough money will disappear up there for good. Will be sure to hit you up for advice and maybe catch up for a beer should I head up that way again all the best Darroch
cheers for now Jeff. P.S ....we caught a few Johnson freshwater croc's in the traps while we were up there but they never gave us any grief, we bathed in the river every night.Heaps of tortioses there as well.Apologies I wrote some of this before I had seen the whole video.
You looked as if you all had great fun,if you ever go back there for another trip I would only be too happy to give you directions for the spot where the Prawn farm was located at, suffice to say the venture was a flop over 2 million was spent trying to get it to work.A most enjoyable part of my life however in getting paid for basically fishing everyday of the week lol.
Could tell you lots more but think I'm most probably boring you already ....
We worked on that project for almost 2 years.Things were pretty rough to start off, we basically were camping like you guys, but we were doing it for 6 weeks at a time and then we would get out and go back to Cairns for a weekend.
We had a camp based right on the Mitchell River about 15 kilometers further north of where you camped.
I was working for W.Angliss&co back in those days and they experimented with trying to breed them in tanks on the Mitchell River and then as they got older they were moved into dams that we had dug out 6 dams in all a kilometer square and roughly 20 feet deep.
Then again its been a long time so I could be wrong! If your locals I'm guessing you would be aware of the fresh water prawns that are natural habitats of the river, they are like a small lobster mostly black in colour.Their scientific name from memory is [Macrobacium-Rosinbergi]
I might be wrong but buy the looks of the mountain that was in the background at the start of your video you were'nt that far north of Mount Carbine itself and you turned left off the main road and kept on driving until you got to the Mitchell River?
Thanks for putting this up on youtube, great to see that country again,I know it fairly well I worked an experimental freshwater prawn farm way back in 1981 just a little further on from where you were camped.
Please read the bottom post first for all of this to make sense lol
