I don't think there is romantic involved. The killer just simply a psycopath person who has issues with women especialy an asian woman who has a higher status than him and he has to clean the dirty cage because of her . university property , where students work and/or study , this workplace violence /criminal act than there is a connection to urban and university crime. AL was a student , the lab was connected to the university , so those aspects cannot and should not be discounted or kept seperate from the overall analysis of this case and future efforts to ensure the safety of students co-workers and fellow citizens in the future.
It is also worth noting that this was a crime of violence against a woman, so attention to that must be paid especially when considering how to be better prepare and protect women from assault and injury wherever they may be .
AL left much of her personal belongings at a separate office before going to the lab ( I read), so as to avoid theft. Perhaps there were things among those belongings - cellphone, etc. - that might have helped her to protect herself. Cellphones with cameras are great protection , carry one with you always.
