This IS the var valve timing. Positioned between the camshafts, it only affects one shaft, the one that is on the "lag" side of things (intake valves). The length of chain from the crank to the first shaft is unchanged. The length of chain from the crank to the second shaft is varied. Consider direction of rotation and that after all cams are driven it doesn't matter what the chain does. It just finds its way back to the crank.
