I know nothing about the little girl who died her other than reading the posts. It is sad but people do stupid things. I remember going to the Grand Canyon and watching tourists (i would guess they were in their earlier 20's) making a humanbody pyramid near the edge. No one fell but I thought how stupid. Thats why places have to close things off so people dont go there. I hope they didn't do that for this location. I am sure the little girls parents feel guility. Hope others learn
I think that people don't think for themselves. They think, "there's railing and an observation deck, so of course it's safe to go down there during a hurricane."
Really sad. The park service will probably have to close the area during storms from now on, because people won't exercise common sense to stay off the water when the weather's rough.
The people who were swept out to sea were "watching the surge from Hurricane Bill?" Not the brightest thing to do, I dare say. If somebody had to die, it's too bad it was a child instead of one of the adults who should have had taking care of her and protecting her, instead of needlessly putting her in harm's way like that.
I just went to the Bangor Daily News web page and it said the 7 yr old girl was found 1/2 mile out to sea. My God, that's awful, it was around 5:00 and this happened around noon time.
I was there when the wave hit, and yes it is tragic the little girl died. yes, people were stupid and too close to the waves. however the little girl's dad was also swept out to sea, he was rescued. I feel so sad for girl's mother, her husband and daughter were both gone and she was screaming their names. She screamed she had been holding her daughter's hand when the wave came, there on second and gone the next. The parents were not putting her in any more danger then they were putting themselves.
We were in Acadia National Park today and were 15 minutes from being at Thunder Hole when this terrible tragedy occurred. There have been lots of rumors and media reports that conflict, so we are all hoping that the reports of everyone being ok are correct. We were hit by a rogue wave here during Hugo and they come out of nowhere and completely take you by surprise...and we were on the sidewalk!
"Man, I'm gettin' outta here!" - wise words. Today a group of people were swept out to sea at Thunder Hole while they were watching the surge from Hurricane Bill.
I haven't been there in about 15 years. I remember my parents used to take us camping and we came here every year. It's awesome. I remember being little and standing right at the end of the walkway and getting all wet. I need to make a trip back up there!
I went there last summer! Acadia is an AMAZING place for a vacation. I loved it. Over the summer, me, my aunt, and my mom went and spent a day at Acadia. It was amazing. This was one of my favorite parts. This and being ontop of that mountain looking down at the ocean.
this is so cool!!! i was just there yesterday, i came back home to Jersey today.. but i've only been to the park on nice days, so ive never seen this! thanks!
on a calm sea, there is only a gurgle, but with a moderate to heavy sea, it does truely thunder.
REMEMBER TO CHECK THE TIDE BEFORE GOIN TO THUNDER HOLE! the best effect is seen and heard on a half tide as the tide is coming IN. because of the shape of the rock structure, if the tide is too high, the force of the wave doesnt travel into the pocket inside the rock that makes the "thunder".
its a fucking hole

I can see how quickly and easily people can get swept out to sea here.

Wow - hope they find the missing.

20 were swept out. 17 got out on their own. The three missing were rescued by the coast guard, but the 7-year-old died.
So so very sad.

5 people were confirmed to be swept out to sea. 3 are still missing. A 7 year old girl and two others (presumably an adult man and woman).
