I never knew much about Billie Holliday until long after her death, and learning how tragic her life was makes this song that much more poignant. Bobby Darin does a great job with it.
"Happy" is on Bobby Darin Seeing is Believing DVD. Lots of good songs on there but my favorite DVD is the final 1973 performance. I wore out one DVD -- had to buy another. His music is timeless and can make me both smile and cry. Love the man and his music. He was the BEST.
I was close to Frank Sinatra. Frank didn't like Bobby at first with his early Splash, Splash and rock songs but when Bobby moved on to singing great songs Frank loved him. I once asked him about those early songs and he said he did them just to get his feet in the door, to become known so he could finally sing the songs he wanted to. I miss him to this day.
A tough thing to deal with. The last time I saw him was when I was playing a club in Washington D.C. He would come in after his show and we'd sing duets and clown around. He wasn't always easy to get along with. He would have very bad moods when he would just leave everyone and everything and disappear to someplace but he always came back, ready to perform again.
Another interesting fact. Bobby went through a terrible time when, in his mid-thirties, he discovered that the woman that be believed was his mother all these years was not. His sister was his mother.
As a singer myself, i had the great pleasure to meet and become a close friend to Bobby. For those of you who only remember him for Mack the Knife and other hits and never seen him perform live, you missed Bobby's total talent. He did imressions equal to any other impressionist, he did wonderful comedy, played various instruments and moved on stage like likie no other singer I've ever seen. He told me because of his heart condition that he would never reach 40 years of age. Sadly, he didn't.
When was this done? He looks so tired, the voice doens't though. God I loved Bobby, even when I was to young to appreciate him as much as I do now. I miss him, thank God for you tube, takes me back. L.
Smokey Robinson wrote this, with music by Michel Legrand. It's a great song, a grat big 70's ballad, on of the nice things Darin recorded for Motown, his final record label.
Bobbyfan64 - Hey everybody . . . . it's a little less than a month until what would have been Bobby's 74th birthday, and since he now has a facebook page with only 200 fans, lets see if we can 10,000 fans by May 14!
On the page you can even see a cute senior photo of Bobby in the photos section.
Frank Sinatra's page has 120,000 fans, and Bobby should have more than 200! Go to Facebook, if you're a member, and search Robert Walden Cassoto.
Thank you for posting this. He was such an amazing singer, and all around entertainer. And, he accomplished so much in such a short amount of time (his songs covered such a wide range of genres). I just wonder what he could have done if he lived just a bit longer...
Bobby Darin received the GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TONIGHT! His son Dodd Darin gave a beautiful speech on his behalf in yesterday's ceremony. It's on You Tube under " Bobby Darin Lifetime Award". Bobby was a versatile, multitalented genius!
Just incredible. This performance showcases just what a versatile performer Bobby was. How appropriate that the song kind of summed up Bobby's life. He certainly deserved more happiness. RIP Bob.
I'm not sure who recorded it first. Michael sang it on The Tonight Show (with Freddie Prinze co-hosting in 1975). This version is from 72 or 73. It was also Bobby's last studio recording . It's quite a rendition.
I SO AGREE... so sad he died SO YOUNG and that Connie and him did not end up together... damn shame... she STILL pines for him... ah the torment of lament and love lost...
BlueEyedMermaid52..YES..I have loved this lost BOBBY DARIN song ..I also miss HIM and SANDRA DEE..guess I have Gotten SO OLD..BLESS YOU..Blue eyes..RIC
Bobby Darin directed in his will that his body be donated to UCLA Medical School. He had Rheumatic fever as a child which scarred his heart. He died Dec 20 1973 after his 2nd open heart surgery. He wanted to help other people through science. Bless him.
This song is so beautiful. Michael Jackson as a kid sang a very emotive funky version. However, this original version is of course sounds more adult and determined. Bobby Darin is great.
He knew the end was approaching, so it was as if he was determined to give the performance of his life in this song if it killed him. In the end, it did.
Bobby could always pick the right key and arrangement for a song. How many Sinatra standards have you ever heard that Bobby simply presented better? (Sorry Frank).
I agree, Bobby made those "standards" his own. This song is very moving. I think in the Diana Ross movie, it is Michael Jackson singing a faster version but this one is the better arrangement. Bobby lives on!
I just attended a Yankee game, with my Nephew, on a Sunday. And Bobby's rendition of "New York On Sunday" was played for all to hear. I just kept on looking towards the sky, and I said:"Bobby, you're still remembered as one of the greatest singers ever!!!) Of course, Sinatra's version of "NY NY" is always played at the finish of a Yankees game. The only problem is is that the fans sing along~ugh~!~
I've never seen "Lady Sings the Blues", so I don't know this song by anyone but Bobby. I don't think anyone else could have sung this as heartful or as passionate as Bobby D.
Like the rest of you I keep revisiting this video and song and I get emotional everytime. Thank you Bobby for giving us this and thank you Bobbyfan64 for posting.
My God, this is so beautiful. I just keep playing it over and over. Clinique just came out with a fragrance named "Happy" and you can have whatever picture you want on it. Great idea. Got mine.

Bobby is so spectacular and compelling, especially at 2:15 when he bumps it up, he was determined to put everything in had into the vocal. God, I love this man.
Plus a great Smokey Robinson lyric. I love Smokey!
Happy was the last song Bobby recorded in the studio. According to Harriet Wasser, he was very sick at the time. So this song always sounds "sad" , not happy to my ears.
Thank you! Thank you! This is such a treat! What a beautiful musical piece. What a Giant Talent Bobby was! He was such a brilliant and accomplished vocalist! His vocals and writing make him a Giant American Talent. Though he has passed on his music legacy lives for us to enjoy! Thank you again!

Amazing rendition. I have this CD and I used to listen to it on headphones at night so I could sleep better in my rack back in the 90's when I was in the Navy. Thanks for posting. 5 stars and fave.
This song is the title song of Lady Sings the Blues, the story of Billy Holiday a remarkably gifted singer of the 1930's who came from a very troubled childhood. I will always be grateful for having the opportunity to have known her story. If only drugs had never entered her life experience how much happier her life would have been. Drug abuse will always lead to death either of the body or the soul. Billy Holiday's story is only one of the many that bears that reality out.
I completely disagree. I have always thought that this was one of his most moving performances. I see that you marked this as one of your Favorites. If you don't like it, why did you do that?
Thank you bobbyfan, for posting this video. I have never heard this song before. It is so beautiful! Thanks also, for keeping the memory of this wonderful man and his music alive for all to enjoy.

I agree that it's a beautifully written song. The music is by Michel Legrand and the words are by Smokey Robinson. The song came out of Bobby Darin's collaboration with Motown Records towards the end of his life.
I think Bobby Darin is the only man who has ever brought me to tears with a song. Love this song, love Bobby Darin. He is so badly missed. Truly a beautiful man inside out.
