One of the first pop songs he'd actually written since anything off '93's "River Of Dreams". And one of the last so far, to date. What gets me is that, even though he's doing a fine job of singing it here, he elected to have some kid named Cass Dillon sing on the studio version. Joel should've done it himself!
i love Billy Joel, but where is the piano? what i love most about Billy Joel is the the instrumental variation in his songs. this is very Billy Joel in that he adopted a whole new style like he does with every CD.
I was there - it was an amazing night. Billy Joel has probably the most intelligent catalog of all the artists I have ever known. His words always penetrate personal truths.
This guy is so amazing . . . manages to make as strong a statement as the most hardcore metal bands I listened to as a teen . . . and yet be accepted as the mainstream. Utmost respect for this man.
heard this last christmas on Howard Stern.Touched my soul as i feel it should all who know the hell of war. My comment is the song should be produced a bit differently. More power and isolation to the vocals. Lyrics are so powerful something is missing in the soiund. One of his best songs if given full production effort. Needs to be released this holiday season for real cause we are STILL THERE
I really don't get your comment dppicalila.. At first, you consider me stupid for claiming McCartney is a Beatles lover, yet clearly on his OWN CD he stated this in an interview. So who is stupid now? Then, you call me stupid for the opposite opinion - "So what if he does" - In your reasoning I'm stupid no matter what I believe? I don't understand but, lets just say its you who needs to get real and learn a little more about Billy Joel before you attempt to "defend" him from... a fan of his.
"The single biggest moment that I could remember being galvanized into wanting to be a musician for life was seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show" - Straight from Billy's CD Complete Hits Collection. Disc 4, Track 3.
The sound quality's not that good, but who knows where the recording equipment was placed or what acoustic conditions they had to deal with. Cass Dillon has said that Billy based his lyrics on what soldiers serving in Iraq wrote to him. Lyrically, the song makes use of some left-wing cliches, to be sure. Just the same, I think Billy does do a good job of conveying the sense of pointlessness that many of the troops must feel by now about the whole operation.
That song goes in a lot of places pretty quick, sometimes too many at once, but you have to commend the effort and emotion put into this; he really does want people to consider the reality for hundreds of thousands of American fighters.
i love billy joel's songwriting... but i gotta say, this sounds horrible, as if it were written by a hippie 11th grader. do the marines a favor, if you mention anything about fallujah, at least don't let it sound idiotic.
Is'nt it great you write a song trying to make a point, yet despite your efforts they prevail. I guess when you loose Christie and lack the ability to draw a venue larger then a holiday inn, you have a right to be bitter.
i saw him i concert. it was epic

Billy Joel has always been an anti-war man, this song reminds me of his good night saigon, almost the same tone.

@Rockstaralan
He wanted someone the same age and generation as todays soldiers serving in the middle east to sing it.

Good song. If he can still write songs of this quality, then why doesn't he? He's cheating his talent.
