Rahim seems to have confused distinctiveness and categorization with exclusiveness or intolerance. Pluralism means to recognize, understand and respect the distinctive values, expressions and ethos of people, and further, gathering around shared values for strength. So being "identified" is an important first step in the road to pluralism.
Hi Vic, I think you raise a good point - and I agree that pluralism means to build on diversity, but I do not deny this in my speech. Rather, I say that recognizing what we have in common is a necessary prerequisite to building on our differences. We too often jump to our differences (which then has a tendency to divide) as opposed to understanding what we share. I hope I have clarified the point I was trying to make.

Why would you try so hard to dodge a simple question about your ethnicity? What's wrong with just coming out and saying you're Indian? Stop being a tool dood.
Great speech, Rahim! I like the humor inserted here and there. Definitely agree with the portion about "identifying ourselves as human beings." I always get asked the same question, "Where are you from?" and have to decide how to respond: Hometown, birthplace, parents place of origin, etc. Good luck in the future! Feel free to check out my commencement speech video from this past May. ~ Fellow commencement speaker, Anand Iyer, University of Alabama at Birmingham Class of '07.
Congratulations Rahim! A superlative speech, in the words of Saibaba- "heartificial" -your parents are justly proud of you, and we do share in that pride. Madhuri Lalu Lalita & Avinash Vaswani, Barbados
